No actually its quite possible for a Catholic Bishop to drift into heresy and teach it to his own flock. What is not possible is for the Magisterial authority of the church exercised either via Church council or by the Pontiff making a statement ex-cathedra to teach heresy to the flock universally.Lutheranism and Protestantism in general was never a schism, always a heresy. Schism requires the defection of a Bishop.
For a Catholic, the guarantee of the Holy Spirit never allowing His Church to teach heresy resides in His Gift of Infallibility in His Popes. Thus it is possible for a dissident Orthodox bishop to drift into heresy and teach it to his flock, even though he is a Bishop. The same is NOT possible for a Catholic bishop in communion with the Pope. It would be possible for a Catholic bishop to teach heresy, but in the act of so doing he would fall out of communion with the Church. Arius was a Bishop.
It is possible for the pope to personally be a heretic, and for the pope to do a lot of damage in this context. Bishops individually fall into heresy and teach it to their flock with fair frequency I am very heart broken to say. But the individual believer has the assurance that if they are well catechized in the magisterial teaching, they can avoid following any dissident into heresy, particularly with frequent prayer and participation in the sacraments. The rosary is a great tool against this.
