Why do Catholics like Black Metal?

The number of Catholics in this site?! I would need a poll to see than confirmed.

At the very least, threads that indicate a large number here like BLACK metal.

As a metal devotee, I suspect the number of people on this site who enjoy black metal which purports to be Satanic is extremely low. The sweeping generalizations made in this thread seem quite out of whack with my experience on this site and in the metal world.

That said, I certainly will not listen to any bands that spout any anti-Christian garbage. For my Christian friends (none of them Catholic) who do, many of them would say that they listen to metal for the instrumentation, not the lyrics, and they could care less what the lyrics are saying: Christian, Satanic, or anything in-between. And let’s be honest, you can’t understand the lyrics of most black metal bands anyway 😛

They also would contend that for most of those bands is it 100% gimmick and not something that the band believes at all. This reasoning doesn’t satisfy me at all, but it seems to suffice for many.

And like someone said, not even all black metal bands are Satanic. There are Christian metal bands in the genre: I am familiar with Crimson Moonlight, Crimson Thorn, and Frost Like Ashes.

I also have a Christian concert promoter friend who promotes black metal concerts (among many types of metal). I have asked him this question, as it does disturb me that he does so. He sees himself as being Christian outreach to these people. The people involved in Satanic black metal (and that actually believe it) have an intense hatred for Christians, feeling them to be evil hypocrites. In a music business where bands get screwed by everyone - especially concert promoters - my friend is honest, fair, and treats the bands exceptionally well. His goal is that these anti-Christian guys will have to reconcile this thought “This guy is the only promoter that treats us well, yet he’s Christian, which contradicts everything we believe about Christians”.

Here’s my issue.

Marylin Manson, a black metal icon, said this
“Hopefully, I’ll be remembered as the person who brought an end to Christianity.”
― Marilyn Manson. Source: GoodReads.com
That is frightening to me. He also said this.
“Music is the strongest form of magic.”
― Marilyn Manson, Goodreads.com
This stuff is frightening. If a band screamed out “HAIL SATAN” I wonder, would a “Catholic” keep listening? In all honesty, this stuff IS creepy, and, we need to save our Children from this bogwash.

Who considers Marylin Manson to be black metal? I wouldn’t call him an icon of anything other than over-the-top ridiculousness. 🤷 Personally, I wouldn’t take anything he says at face value (assuming those quotations are even accurate to begin with). Being ghoulish is his schtick.

Does anyone even pay attention to him anymore? I thought he pretty much lost any relevance in the music industry after 1998. 🤷 He is creepy, though.

What is the point in liking Black metal? Most of it is “Hail satan, Hail satan” or talking about depressing stuff.

This guy is an honorary member of the Church of Satan, a high-priest.

I don’t like black metal, but I think it’s a gross oversimplification to say that it is all about Satan.

Marylin Manson is about shocking people in order to sell records. Or at least he was 15 years ago back when people still paid attention to him.

Most of the posters here have dealt with your sweeping generalizations about “Catholics liking black metal”.

I think part of the problem may be that you don’t know what black metal is, since you called Marilyn Manson a “black metal icon”. The man is not even remotely affiliated with black metal.

His whole shtick is shock. I have zero interest in him, but I also don’t waste my time worrying about his shocking comments. I doubt he believes a word he says, it’s all part of his public persona intended to shock.

I guess if you want to link back to these purported threads with Catholics praising black metal en masse, we could take a look and comment on why they would be doing so. I highly doubt we’d see more than a rare person or two doing so, if that.

You mean that you belive Marylin Manson about ANYthing??? How do you know that the biography (and its writer) quoted Manson right?

As for country music as being satanic because it is ‘written to be self-centered, woe-is-me, “my girl left and I might as well be dead” types of thoughts’ Are you including such songs as Convoy, Around the World With the Rubber Ducky, Christmas Roses, Wasn’t That a Party? :bigyikes: :irish1: :shamrock2: :D: :knight1:
Country music is pop music with a southern twang.

I wonder why the people who have doubts about the metal genre know the least about it.

OP, at this point, I think you need to provide evidence to back up your claim. You seem to have us trying to answer questions that have little basis in reality.
It surprises me the responses on these forums of Catholics loving Heavy Metal. There was this song by Morbid Angel named Blasphemy, and they were using SHEER BLASPHEMY against the holy SPIRIT. And they were praising Satan, and many on these forums just say “oh they don’t mean it”
I looked up every thread on this forum that mentions Morbid Angel. I found exactly two people calling themselves Catholic and saying they like the band (and the posts were from 2008 and 2011). Somehow that becomes…
Why do Catholics like heavy metal, bands like Morbid Angel who openly praise Satan?
Right now, the evidence is that they don’t, unless you can give us something more than 2 out of 395,447 users on this site.

Good job on the research, Wampa. 👍

I suppose it’s not the first time I have encountered someone who wants to pain all heavy metal with the same broad brush. But yeah, I don’t recall seeing many Catholics on this site that have no problem whatsoever listening to songs that are truly blasphemous.
