Give one or two reasons why you think Catholics live longer than Protestants (proven by statistics)?

I tend to think it is primarily the Eucharist… We eat Jesus…

If that sounds ghoulish, it is in total conformity with St. John 6:27-54…

What’s your source?

i can’t recall right off the top of my head… but i do not bother with unreliable sources…

Also… have you ever read the obituaries? If you look at 100 obits… you will likely find that most of the longest lived persons were Catholic… Of course, thye usually don’t tell how long the person was Catholic or whatever…

Anyway… i have known (& known of) a lot of Catholics who have lived a long time… at most of the funerals i attend (i never miss a funeral Mass wehther i know the deceased or not)… the deceased is either 90 + or approaching 90…

Plus… it just stands to reason that those who eat Christ Himself would live longer… Jesus heals… 🙂

What’s your source?
i am pretty sure the woman who lived to be 122 was Catholic… Her name was Jean Calment… and she was baptized in a Catholic-sounding (named) Church… just can’t recall the name… i read about her years ago… Also there is a catholic woman in some other country who is supposed to be 127… don’t know if they ever proved it… they were workign on it … trying to find a reliable birth certificate… In any case, she was very old, if not 127…

There could be other statistical explanations–e.g. more Catholics than Protestants. If you find a source, please post. If true, it would be very interesting to know the details.

I would just like to say that I am highly skeptical that Catholics live longer than Protestants. Show me two or more reliable studies which seemingly prove this, and I might begin to believe the claim. Most likely, other factors contributed to the people living longer, such as a healthier diet, more exercise, ect. Just because some of the oldest people in the world are Catholic doesn’t mean that following the Catholic religion was the direct cause of their longevity.

What? More Catholics?? In the US, the highest % of Catholics in most states is 20-25%… In some states it is around 10% or even less…

i think Catholics live longer (aside from the Eucharist) because Catholics usually live “cleaner” lives… they don’t abuse their bodies, usually, with alchohol, cigarettes, fornication, birth control pills, (well, some of them don’t anyway…) etc…

I have trouble believing that Catholics live longer than Protestants and either way it doesn’t matter since religion has nothing to do with longevity. Many Catholic countries are third-world, with much lower life expectancies, whereas every Protestant country (with the exception of some island nations in the Caribbean perhaps) is first-world.

Christians in general make up only 1% of Japan’s population yet the Japanese have the world’s highest life expectancies. Your question should be more like, “Why do Shintoists and Buddhists live longer than Christians?”

Well, Psalter, I really agree with your reasoning. But what if income levels were equal?

Well, i’m Catholic and i find this argument rather unnecessary. So what if Catholics outlive Protestants? What does it prove, really?

Does it prove God’s mercy is on us? Whats the point of living till 122 years old? I have met many elderly people and seen how they struggle just to reach a cup in the cupboard or make an effort just for getting up from their chair.

Psalter does bring up a good point. Asians generally do have healthier diets. Its nothing to do with being Catholic. Its about staying away from junk food.

I don’t think obits are the most reliable source of demographics information, because Catholics have more than most due to the Mass of Christian Burial that needs to be published.

I did google for demographics/religion/catholic/protestant, and found this article

In contrast to Catholics and Mainline Protestant congregations, Conservative Protestant churches have a mixed effect on community health. The “otherworldly” character of Conservative Protestantism leads congregations in this tradition to focus on the afterlife. Conservative Protestantism is also a more individualistic faith, one in which the believer’s personal relationship with God is paramount. These types of churches are thought to downplay the importance of using collective action, including human institutions, to improve the world.** Communities dominated by Conservative Protestant churches tend to have higher mortality rates.**
**
However, this finding has an important caveat, because there are different types of Conservative Protestant churches, namely, Fundamentalist, Pentecostal and Evangelical.**
“We find that a greater presence of Fundamentalist and Pentecostal congregations is associated with higher rates of mortality, but communities with a large number of Evangelical congregations have better health outcomes,” said Blanchard. “Evangelical congregations do a better job of engaging the broader community and promoting social connectedness that is so essential for longer life expectancies. Fundamentalist congregations tend to be more reclusive, and this insularity is linked with higher mortality rates.”

So what if Catholics outlive Protestants? What does it prove, really?

Does it prove God’s mercy is on us?.
No, I don’t think so.

I still think it’s interesting. My children’s relatives on their dad’s side are all pentecostal fundamentalists. I was shocked when, in my twenties, they were already parting out all of their belongings, as if they were going to die soon; and they were only in their 40s!

Agreed! Catholics live longer than others…2 words…eternal life! 😃 😛

Hey! I have just come accross this thread and have not had time to read the responses to the first post. I have to dash but am posting my :twocents: so that I can be alerted how this is developing and catch up!

Maybe, maybe that old adage “the good die young” applies and we Catholics need more time to get our “house in order”:extrahappy:

Because it takes longer for catholics to repent or maybe God would rather have more protestant in heaven than catholics
