Why do Catholics not think the term Fundamentalist isn't insulting?

If I say “Roman Catholic” I am doing it to distinguish between that and Orthodox. It is simply easier than saying… “Catholic but not Orthodox or Eastern Catholic and not those other people who are catholic but not in communion with Rome”

And I consider a “Bible Christian” to be of the Denomination of “Bible Churches” not protestants in general.

An awful lot of Churchy words & phrases are terribly long-winded ​

Maybe RCs would prefer to be called RRs - Roman Riters

That would

• avoid upsetting members of the Roman Rite
• not imply anything about the use of the title Catholic
• avoid offending non-RR Churches

I find the term “Protestant” quite insulting too when used uncharitably with certain groups. My former faith, but yet still my family, consider Catholics a denomination and they are the one true Church founded by Christ. You insult them when you refer to them as church of Christs or whatever. They use the term “Christian”. nothing more or nothing less. When using some of these references on CAF it is rather difficult to convey a message of charity among Catholics that railroad non-Catholics. Scott Hahn uses the term “bible Christians”. That feels better to me and is more cheritable because it doesn’t offend someone that claims bible only doctrine. “Fundamentalist” and “Fundie” offended me, but to say the “Fundie” is more derogatory than “Fundamentalist” is just rediculous. I guess I have to remap again. Anytime someone like Jack Chick is talked about I he falls under that catagory even among conservative bible Christians.

What is the issue you wish to discuss? You seem to have circular arguments. Kinda like policy of “Dear” leader in the 1950’s What troubles you? Are you Catholic? Do you no longer wish to be known by this name? What is offensive about Fundamentalist? or Protestant?
Advice to you: Seek inner spiritual strength, through frequent and worthy reception of Sacraments.
All else is straw.

The worst feature of Fundamentalism is that it is being exported to other countries. It is US Protestant Fundamentalism that has inflicted Dispensational Premillennialism on the world (unless DPism is the cause of Fund’ism, which is possible)

Roman Catholic doesn’t offend me, but I am learning that it is offensive to some of my fellow Catholics.

To the Op, I used to be a fundamentalist also. My particular church had an ‘us against them’ type of mentality. I have to be wary that I don’t fall back into that line of thinking.

I still have friends who are fundamentalists and for the most part, I respect their zeal and faith even though I am troubled by some of their beliefs.

I have never had one of my friends though express any dislike for the tern fundamentalists. I did have a friend tell me that she was warned not to call her self a Baptist, as some people have a prejuduce against Baptists. (that struck me as odd)

This term is offensive to me because I used to be one.

It took me a while to figure out the particulars of abbreviations on this board, such as nC or non-C for those who are not Catholic, LDS for Mormons, and so on.

I never found “Fundamentalist” insulting, since I saw the word as describing someone who believes/believed in particular doctrines or traditions (such as OSAS or the literal translation of the Bible).

I did find the word “Fundie” to be a little over the top as far as shortening a word, because as Contarini had written above, it just sound pejorative to me.

Actually, I once asked a friend to which denomination she belonged and she replied, “Non-Denominational Fundamental Independant,” so Fundamentalist was ok with her. But I know that she doesn’t speak for everyone, it was just her personal preference.

If I’ve offended you, I apologize, but I can’t think of a better way to describe that “brand” (for lack of a better word) of faith.

I’m not going to call Ruthenian Catholics “Ruthies,” either.
