Why do Catholics play the role of victim so much?

If you really are the one true church that Christ founded, then why do you give a hoot what anyone else thinks of you? It amazes me the extent some of you will go to play the victim’s role.

In what ways, in your perception, do we portray ourselves as victims?

You really cannot make that kind of generalization in regards to Catholics. Those who believe in the words that Jesus spoke (“Those who persecute you persecute me; those who reject you reject me”) - whether Catholic or not - can use this as support for their own views of persecution and victimization from secular and other anti-Christian/anti-faith sources.

Victims in what sense of the word? Please elaborate.

I disagree with your characterisation of Catholics. One of the things that started my interest in converting to the Catholic faith was the calm self-confidence Catholics manifested and the fact that many Catholics quite openly wear medals/crucifixes and other signs of their faith - far from a victim mentality.

Maybe it is becuase of the fact that the One who came to found the true Church upon Peter, was the ultimate ‘Victim’.

We do try to emulate Him in everything you know!

I don’t want to speak for the OP but he has a point.

Consider the titles of some of these threads:

“Why Do Orthodox Hate Catholics So Much”
(hate???)
“John Hagee=Extreme Anti-Catholic”
(Extreme???)
“Why So Much Hatred By Non-Catholic Christians”
(Hatred???)
“Why Do Baptists Hate Catholics”
(Hate???}

Meanwhile there was the recent thread
“Are Protestants Christians”

Now I would have expected a thread in response to this one
“Why Do Catholics Hate Protestants So Much” but haven’t seen any.

Anyway, my :twocents:

Persecution of Catholics still alive
In India, Catholic churches are regularly burned by Hindu Fundamentalists, and both Hindus and local animist groups have harassed and killed Catholic converts. In Pakistan, which disagrees with India about everything else, an Islamic Fundamentalist government does the same.

Even great charity is no protection. Mother Teresa’s Sisters of Charity have been threatened in India and three of them were murdered in Yemen in the 1990s. Following is the first in a series of articles by Robert Royal, author of the soon-to-be released book Catholic Martyrs of the 20th Century.

Graffiti carry threats against Pope
Naples, Oct. 5, 2007 (CWNews.com) - Threats against Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) have been scrawled on the walls of buildings in Naples, Italy, a few weeks before a visit there by the Pontiff.

Graffiti reading “Death to the Pope” and “Death to Ratzinger” have appeared in the Italian city, where Pope Benedict is scheduled to make a one-day visit on October 21. Italian police officials believe that the graffiti were the work of leftist groups.

In April of this year, death threats against Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco of Genoa prompted police to provide the archbishop, who heads the Italian episcopal conference, with police protection. Those threats-- which also came in the form of graffiti, as well as anonymous letters

Two Teens Were Planning Columbine-Style Church Bombing
15-year-old girl called police after learning of the plans in an online chat on MySpace.com, Myers said. She said the pair planned to plant pipe bombs at the buildings and shoot people inside in a manner similar to attacks at Columbine and Virginia Tech. They discussed chaining the doors during a Mass, she said.

I don’t consider myself or the Church a victim. But I do realize that there is very strong anti-Catholic sentiment held by many non-Catholic Americans.

This isn’t victimhood. It’s just acknowledging the reality of the way many non-Catholic Americans think.

It’s not about Catholic “victimhood”–it’s about non-Catholic ignorance.

What does your seeing posts about this (anti-Catholic sentiment held by non-Catholics) as Catholic victimhood. instead of seeing those posts as social commentary about religious ignorance and prejudice, say about your view of Catholics?

Would you have come to the same conclusion about Jews who post about anti-Semitic comments and views?

Again, your post and our responses aren’t about our supposed victimhood. They are about your faulty perception of Catholicism and Catholics.

We are not your victims. Your ignorance and prejudice are your own. Sorry. This isn’t a game of tag. You don’t get to pass your ignorance based prejudice to us and rename it “victimhood”.

You own it.

I for one, could give a hoot. Next question.

who lied to you about this?

what makes you think we care about what others say about us?

so many of you say: catholics dont read the Bible. i still dont read the Bible i continue to do what i always did, i care to hear the Word from the priests or others catholic teachers. you see, i dont care what you say.
your game on trying to put doubt on the minds of catholics about the Church with your false enterpretation of the Bible and trying to lead catholics to believe on your false enterpretation of the Bible by saying that catholics do not read their Bible therefore we dont know God does not work with me. do you see i got you guys all figured out. i dont care what you say about us.

many of you criticizes the Catholic Eucharist. i continue to believe the Body and Blood of Christ to be real. do you see? i dont care what you say.

so many of you criticizes our papa. catholics continue to love, obey and believing him. again, we do not care what you say.

so many of you criticiezes our mother Mary. to this day she still our mother. again we dont care what you say.

actually, believe or not, i rejoice when you all judge us and criticizes us for all that we believe. that is how i know for sure we have the Truth of Christ. after all, did not Jesus say. be glad when you suffer persecution because of me. for your reward is great. so, i ask you just continue with the good work you’ ve been doing for 450 years.

i could go on and on here. but i will stop.

Sounds more like martyrdom than victimhood. Suffering with purpose?

You care. It’s all over this forum how angry and frustrated you get. I have yet to see one of you stand down or concede a point. This is not so much a discussion forum as it is a support group.

I don’t think it’s fair to generalize like that.

Stand down or concede what point?

Like when a non-Catholic says, “You guys worship Mary” - rather than getting frustrated because we’ve already explained that one about 5,386,291 times… we should say, "You’re right - you got us… yep, we worship her! " Is THAT what you’ve been waiting for? If so, you’re gonna be waiting a loooooooooooong time.

We’ve all heard of anti-Semitism and anti-Catholicism. I never hear the term “anti-Protestantism”. I think that answers it.

yellowbird:

I am one of a small group of “fallen-away” Catholics who post on this forum. I have been literally bludgeoned by hateful posters who have refused to consider even one particle of anything I’ve had to say (with a few notable exceptions, like JReducation, who responds to inquiries with information, not condemnation). Hardly anyone says, “That’s interesting, marietta, but this is what I believe” or “this is what the Church teaches - you might find this applies to your situation.” Upper case fonts, bold and red lettering, character assassination, name-calling, deliberate convolution of my posts - you name it, I’ve been the subject of it.

It’s fine if people do not agree with me, or if their beliefs differ from mine. But I believe without posters like me, this forum would be a back-slapping, glad-handing ice cream social.

From my perspective, this brings out the worst in people, me included. If there is no free exchange of ideas then we are looking at a little theocracy. And if Catholics want to carry a message of compassion, hope and love, wouldn’t it be better to try another approach?

“Stand down or concede what point?” you challenge.

What is it that they say? “Charity starts at home”?

Marietta,
I’m sorry that has been your experience here. I can’t imagine it’s made you want to run back to your local parish and join back up with us, has it? 😦

I’m not familar with the threads you’ve participated in, so I can’t really comment except to say if you’re being mistreated, you should report it to the mods - and know that there are jerks all over. I’ve been treated HORRIBLY on other forums for the same reasons - except that I left an Evangelical Church.

About CAF: Generally I think Catholics and Non Catholics debate over stuff they think Catholics believe but we don’t. At least that’s what I’ve gathered from what I’ve read? So that’s why I’m thinking Catholics wouldn’t “stand down” - because we don’t believe the accusations are true.

At any rate, I agree with you - this forum would be very boring if it were only Catholics.
