Since then, the idea of praying to Mary has always made me feel uncomfortable, especially when I speak with someone who says they pray to Mary. I understand asking others to pray for you and with you, as has been clearly communicated in this thread, but what is the response when someone says they pray to Mary as an intercessor to God through Jesus Christ? It’s confusing.
I completely understand the confusion.
I think we can look at terminology.
Today when we say ‘worship’, we talk of something that should be for God alone.
That’s today.
But recently (last century), we used the word ‘worship’ the way we use ‘honor’ today.
We call a judge in the U.S. “Your Honor”.
In Britain, they still call a judge “Your Worship”.
Now of course we honor God as God should be honored.
But we are also called to honor our mother and father, not as we honor God, but as we
should honor our mother and father.
Honoring our mother and father does not detract from giving God his due honor.
Now lets look at the word pray.
Today we consider the word ‘pray’ to be something only for worshiping God.
Not that long ago ‘pray’ only meant ‘talk to’ or ‘ask’.
Consider a young maiden talking to a suitor and handing him a handkerchief, “I pray thee take this favor as a token of my love”.
She is not worshiping (in the modern sense) only ‘asking’ something of him.
So even if you hear someone say they ‘pray to Mary’, that person is not giving something to Mary that rightly belongs to God. That person is merely ‘talking to’ or ‘asking of’ something from Mary … namely to pray to Jesus for us.
Same for the saints.
I mean, really, who is better at praying … we here on earth or those in heaven.
We get tired, distracted, hungry, …
They can pray unceasingly SO much better than we can.
We do not ‘pray to’ the saints in heaven INSTEAD of God, but in addition to.
I realize that the words people use can be misconstrued or misunderstood.
I’m very glad you are taking the time to understand, not just what they say, but what they mean.
All glory to God on high!
