Well said … 🙂

The whole question has confused me for so long. I was raised Catholic until pre-teen age, and drifted for many years, until I was introduced to Christianity several years ago.

Since then, the idea of praying to Mary has always made me feel uncomfortable, especially when I speak with someone who says they pray to Mary. I understand asking others to pray for you and with you, as has been clearly communicated in this thread, but what is the response when someone says they pray to Mary as an intercessor to God through Jesus Christ? It’s confusing.

Also, what about Idolatry? I understand home alters for prayer, prayers corners, and places in one’s home to present pictures, statues, and other beloved items, but it makes me unsure of a person’s intentions when they say they pray to Mary and also have a quite significant statue of Mary in what can only be described as a place of worship (it seems) in their home for Mary.

I just do not understand. I have no issue with asking Mary to pray for you or with you, as you might ask saints, people regarded highly in the Church, or even your neighbor and other Church members, but I seem to have an issue with it when it appears to be what I describe as idolatry. How does one reconcile this issue of idolatry and praying with Mary?

Please help. Sincere Regards.
JL: Phil, I hope this might help somewhat: If you have in your home, pictures (images), toy soldiers (images), dolls (images), figurines (images) or any man made likeness of anything in heaven, on earth beneath or in the water. You are breaking the commandment if you interpret it as idolatry for making and having images. If you visit DC and go to a war shrine with images, are they idols? Check the parking lot this Sunday to see how many, who condemn making images, have an image of Christ in the likeness of a fish on their car. The fish, which is found in the water, is one of the earliest Christian images for Christ. A literal interpretation would make this an idol.

If you admit to having images, in your house, in the likeness of things on earth in heaven or beneath the earth, but justify the presents of images in your house because you do not kneel and pray before them, which you consider worship. By that you indicate images are only wrong when worshiped, as the Church has said from day one. So you are either in violation of the commandment or you know having images are not in violation of the commandment, unless worshiped. Our Lord himself commanded the making of images, but only after he had commanded the people not to worship them, so images in themselves cannot be sinful, as our Lord would not have commanded sinful images be made by his people. God commanded Moses to make the brass serpent. Then latter commanded images be placed in the Holy of Holies (the presents of God) in the Temple .

As far as kneeling or bowing down being an act of worship due God alone: Joshua 5:13 Joshua fell on his face to the earth and did worship…[This man (angel), Joshua would have venerated (worshiped), not adored (worshiped) due God alone. He did not make the holy person his god or equal to God, but bowed down to show reverence.]

Dn 8:16… Gabriel…17 So he came near where I stood and when he came I was afraid and fell upon my face… [With veneration or reverence, he fell on his face (bowed down). Does one worship a king when he bows down before him? Do the Israelites today worship the Wailing Wall when they show reverence and stand and pray before it? Many will back away from the wall, so not to turn their back to on the wall. When one kneels and prays before images at a war memorial in DC are they worshiping the images? Are the U.S. an other Protestant nations idolatrous nations because they have images (statues)? It is the intention of the heart, not the act nor image, that brings about worship due God alone. Did the Israelites worship the Ark of the Covenant when they put it on a high stone and sacrificed before it? 1Sam 6. Or was their intention to worship God himself? Those who saw and were not Israelites might have thought they were worshiping a gold box or the images of the angels on top, but what one thinks doesn’t make it so.
Num 21:8 the LORD said to Moses Make a fiery serpent set it upon a pole…every one bitten when he looks on it shall live 9 Moses made a serpent of brass and put it upon a pole…if a serpent had bitten any when he beheld the serpent of brass he lived. [This again is an image commanded by the Lord for healing. It is an image a foreshadowing of Christ. The serpent is Christ on the Cross taking on himself all the sins of the world and healing of sin, the venom of the serpent, all who look upon him. ]

Ex 25:17 you shall make a mercy seat of pure gold…18 you shall make two cherubims of gold of beaten work…19 make one cherub on one end and the other cherub on the other…20 the cherubims shall stretch forth their wings on high covering the mercy seat…their faces shall look one to another toward the mercy seat…21…put the mercy seat above on the ark… 22 there I will meet with you and I will commune with you from above the mercy seat between the two cherubims… … [Here the Lord is commanding the making of images of things in heaven and earth to be used in the most Holy or Holies where he will commune with his people. Would the Lord forbid images, with a command, then command images to be made even though it was idolatry=sinful. He forbad images as gods to worship. Early Christians first imaged Christ by a fish, and is still used by those today who claim images are forbidden, the Holy Spirit is imaged as fire by the same people.]

1Kgs 7:36…he graved cherubims lions and palm trees… 42 And four hundred pomegranates… 44 And one sea and twelve oxen under the sea 45 …these vessels which Hiram made to king Solomon for the house of the LORD were of bright brass… [These would have been blessed, sanctified, set apart for holy use in the House of God. They would have been reverenced as holy objects (not worshiped as gods). Just as statues in church are blessed and show the glory of God in his Saints. Heroes and examples to all God’s people because of their pouring out themselves as a self sacrifice for the glory of God and the good of his people. Catholics do not worship statues but go to the shrines of a holy person to ask them to pray for their needs just as one would ask a Christian on earth to pray for a need.

The church is one body with Christ as the Head in heaven and our holy brothers and sisters are still a part of the church in heaven, Christ is the vine his people are the branches one body. If one worships a statue they are not following the teaching of the church. Secular people are honored by statues for good deeds and we honor our holy people for their service and love of God as examples for all generations of God’s people. [Col 3:5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication impurity passion evil desire and covetousness which is idolatry 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming 7 In these you once walked when you lived in them [this is Idolatry that God hates.]

I’m Catholic… and i had a big debate (but never a fight) with my protestant friend yesterday…

and I got through the question of “worshiping” Mary last time, (she is our Mother, so we RESPECT her and the prayer says “pray for us sinners…” not “oh grant us salvation right now because You’re our God.”)

but I got stuck when she asked me why we pray to Mary & saints when we could directly pray to God?

I told her that they’re like the connector from us to God, but she didnt seem to get it… how should I explain this?

& same for confession, why do we have to talk to priests when God could just forgive us?

I guess protestants don’t really like the idea of …connecting? (that’s how i understand it as…)

I was pretty sure that a lot of other protestants would be wondering about this as well, and I thought i should ask here.

help meee pleasee??
JL: Hope this will help. JL: Communion of Saints: There were no saints in heaven before the resurrection and ascension of our Lord to ask for prayer, but now we have access through the body of Christ to all the heavenly host. HB 12:22 But YE ARE COME TO mount Sion…to the CITY OF THE LIVING GOD the heavenly Jerusalem…TO an innumerable COMPANY OF ANGELS 23 TO the general assembly and church of THE FIRSTBORN…TO GOD the Judge of all…TO THE SPIRITS OF JUST MEN MADE PERFECT 24…TO JESUS THE MEDIATOR of the new covenant. Assembly and church of the firstborn=those on earth who’s names are written in the book of life. The spirits of just men made perfect=the souls of saints in heaven to whom one may come, just as we come to Jesus seeking help. HB 12:1 …WE also ARE COMPASSED ABOUT WITH SO GREAT A CLOUD OF WITNESSES let us LAY ASIDE EVERY WEIGHT… Compassed about by a great cloud of witnesses. I have heard Billy Graham and other Protestants along with bible commentaries, describe the cloud of witnesses, as if the heavenly saints are looking down on a stadium field viewing the saints on earth. Why would they not pray for us? In heaven will you not ask Christ to help a loved one you see in need? We can lay aside every weight as we have many in heaven interceding=praying for us. When I was Protestant, I heard some testify they felt the presents and help of a deceased loved one and everyone said, AMEN. LK 15:7…likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth…10 Likewise I say unto you there is joy in the PRESENCE OF THE ANGELS of God over one sinner that repenteth. Saints in heaven know when a sinner repents and rejoice in the presence of angels. If they know when one repents, why can they not know the prayers of the saints on earth? Jesus talking about a woman who lost a coin, when she found it, she called her friends and neighbors to rejoice with her. So also the saints and Angels rejoice when a lost soul is found. it is not Jesus and me, but Jesus and us the entire body of Christ through which the Spirit flows. Through the flow of the Holy Spirit, the soul of that body=the Church, we all receive the grace to persevere. Would a soul in heaven seeing a loved one hurting not pray for them but only watch? RV 5:8…the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb HAVING EVERY ONE OF THEM harps and golden vials full of odours which are the PRAYERS OF SAINTS. The four beasts=angels, twenty-four elders are the 12 Patriarchs and 12 Apostles who ware crowns, only saints are given crowns in heaven. They are offering up the prayers of the saints on earth interceding, through Christ the Lamb=mediator. Harps adding to the prayers of the saints a pleasing sound unto the Lord, just as David played the harp to soothe Saul. Rv 8:3… another angel…stood at the altar with a golden censer…he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar before the throne 4…the smoke of the incense rose with the PRAYERS OF THE SAINTS from the hand of the angel before God. From the hand of the angel the prayers of the saints on earth are offered up to God (interceeding). The angel adds to the prayers of the saints (incense) to make them more pleasing to God. 1 COR 12:25 That there should be no schism in the body…the members should have the same care one for another. We are the body of Christ and Christ is the Head and we are all joined to that vine=Christ, with the sap=Holy Spirit going through all, those passed on and those on earth, otherwise how could Saul (Paul) have been persecuting Jesus in heaven, while Saul was on earth persecuting the people of God on earth, we are all one body, one unit. Rm 12:4 For as we have MANY MEMBERS IN ONE BODY, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, ARE ONE BODY IN CHRIST, and every one MEMBERS ONE OF ANOTHER.
Eph 3:14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom HIS WHOLE FAMILY IN HEAVEN AND ON EARTH derives its name. The living and the souls of those passed over, are the whole family of God. One body, the living body of Christ, on earth and in heaven the whole assembly of God’s people the Church, members one of another.

WHY DO YOU not believe in intercessory I assume you read the Bible
Then our opposition might be willing to admit that intercessory prayer is permissible, and that the people in heaven are indeed alive, but they have no idea what is going on here on earth! So, why on earth would they intercede for us? This seems like a reasonable question, but like all the other objections I think can be easily answered. (Luke 16:19-30) In the story of the rich man and Lazarus, we see in verses 27 & 28, that the rich man is very much aware of his brothers on earth and is interceding on their behalf. “… Then I beg you father to send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.”. (Revelations 5:8) “And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and with golden bowls filled with incense, which are the prayers of the saints; …”. We can see by this verse that those in heaven are interceding for the saints on earth- they offer our prayers to Jesus in the form of incense! This is one reason why we use incense!
We see here that it is scriptural to ask the saints in heaven to intercede for us! In (1 Kings 2:19) we see King Solomon’s mother Bathsheba speaking to the King on behalf of someone!
In this verse King Solomon sets up a throne for his mother on his right hand, and he bows to her!
How appropriate it is for the Blessed Mother to speak on our behalf to her son the King of Kings!

The whole question has confused me for so long. I was raised Catholic until pre-teen age, and drifted for many years, until I was introduced to Christianity several years ago.
Just so you will know, many people would take that statement to mean that you think Catholics are not Christian. That is both incorrect and insulting.
What would you say if I asked you to pray for me? I should hope you would say “Sure” and then do so. Now, what if I said “Pray, my friend, will you pray for me?” Did I pray to you first? Yes, I did. However, the term “pray” has many meanings, one of which has fallen into disuse in some places. That meaning is to make a request. It is the same as saying “I am asking you to pray for me.” Now, Catholics (and EO), understand that there is a difference between prayer and worship. This is a simple distinction that some non-Catholic groups, due to the nature of their worship, do not understand.
Others have answered this one quiet well.

It is not idolatry. One must intend to worship the idol first. Catholics DO NOT worship Mary. At all. Period.

How does one reconcile this issue of idolatry and praying with Mary?
We use common sense. We know Mary isn’t God and she can’t forgive sins and she doesn’t judge souls. +

Pointing to Catholics that misunderstand the Church’s teachings about Mary gives some anti-Catholics their “gotcha” moment.

The intercession of fellow Christians—which is what the saints in heaven are—also clearly does not interfere with Christ’s unique mediatorship because in the four verses immediately preceding 1 Timothy 2:5, Paul says that Christians should interceed: “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. This is good, and pleasing to God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Tim. 2:1–4). Clearly, then, intercessory prayers offered by Christians on behalf of others is something “good and pleasing to God,” not something infringing on Christ’s role as mediator.

I think it this way god would want to respect your mother here on earth and would you ask your mother to pray for you? And god says honor your mother and father. So that is what the catholic our doing honoring Mother Mary.

Did Jesus respect his mother Mary?. So should we!

Did Jesus respect his mother Mary?. So should we! I didn’t understand but as these subject is getting talk about I am understanding more. I just thinking what God would want us to do and honor Mother Mary is what he want us to do and to treat our own mothers with the same respect. Because they gave us birth.

It’s confusing.
I completely understand the confusion.
I think we can look at terminology.

Today when we say ‘worship’, we talk of something that should be for God alone.
That’s today.
But recently (last century), we used the word ‘worship’ the way we use ‘honor’ today.
We call a judge in the U.S. “Your Honor”.
In Britain, they still call a judge “Your Worship”.

Now of course we honor God as God should be honored.
But we are also called to honor our mother and father, not as we honor God, but as we should honor our mother and father.
Honoring our mother and father does not detract from giving God his due honor.

Now lets look at the word pray.
Today we consider the word ‘pray’ to be something only for worshiping God.
Not that long ago ‘pray’ only meant ‘talk to’ or ‘ask’.
Consider a young maiden talking to a suitor and handing him a handkerchief, “I pray thee take this favor as a token of my love”.
She is not worshiping (in the modern sense) only ‘asking’ something of him.

So even if you hear someone say they ‘pray to Mary’, that person is not giving something to Mary that rightly belongs to God. That person is merely ‘talking to’ or ‘asking of’ something from Mary … namely to pray to Jesus for us.

Same for the saints.
I mean, really, who is better at praying … we here on earth or those in heaven.
We get tired, distracted, hungry, …
They can pray unceasingly SO much better than we can.
We do not ‘pray to’ the saints in heaven INSTEAD of God, but in addition to.

I realize that the words people use can be misconstrued or misunderstood.
I’m very glad you are taking the time to understand, not just what they say, but what they mean.

All glory to God on high!

michel

This has always been a subject, which stirs up a lot of debate, and discussion! I personally pray to God the Father, through my intercessor, Jesus Christ; and don’t care one way or the other if catholics pray to Mary or the saints! This is their prerogative, as it is ours to bypass her and enter the throneroom of grace! It is one of the privileges we gained, when the veil was torn from the top down! Praise God for freedom and mercy!👍

we come to all of them to the angels the just men and eve onto Jesus its in the bible:

Heb 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
Heb 12:23 to the general assembly and church of the first-born who are written in Heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
Heb 12:24 and to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

and about confessing to the priest well jesus gave this power to the apostles:

Joh 20:21 and he said to them again, 'Peace be with you. ‘As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.’
Joh 20:22 After saying this he breathed on them and said: Receive the Holy Spirit.
Joh 20:23 If you forgive anyone’s sins, they are forgiven; if you retain anyone’s sins, they are retained.

This has always been a subject, which stirs up a lot of debate, and discussion! I personally pray to God the Father, through my intercessor, Jesus Christ; and don’t care one way or the other if catholics pray to Mary or the saints! JL: Actually beleevr it is because the veil was torn from top down, that we NOW have total access to the Holy of Holies. [Hb12:22 But YE ARE COME TO mount Sion…to the CITY OF THE LIVING GOD the heavenly Jerusalem…TO an innumerable COMPANY OF ANGELS 23 TO the general assembly and church of THE FIRSTBORN…TO GOD the Judge of all…TO THE SPIRITS OF JUST MEN MADE PERFECT 24…TO JESUS THE MEDIATOR of the new covenant.] We come to all these including the Father. As a Catholic I sometimes go directly to the Father, sometimes to the Son or the Holy Spirit. Sometimes I ask a specific saint to pry for me or others, sometimes I ask all the saints and angels to pray for me or others. I now have access to all, as in a household one has access to their father, mother or siblings or all. Whom one goes to depends on the situation or preference. [Rv 5:6 And I beheld, and, lo, **in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb AS IT HAD BEEN SLAIN, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.] Our slain sacrificed Passover Lamb the Bread of Life with his atoning blood ever living and present in the true Holy of Holies in the midst of the throne before God the Father MEDIATING for us ever showing forth and making present his once for all sacrifice. [All prayers go thru Christ, the Lamb of God, our MEDIATOR]

Rv 8:3… another angel…stood at the altar with a golden censer…he was given much incense to mingle with the prayers of all the saints upon the golden altar BEFORE THE THRONE 4…the smoke of the incense rose with the PRAYERS OF THE SAINTS **from the hand of the angel **BEFORE GOD. From the hand of the angel the prayers of the saints on earth are offered up to God (interceding). The angel adds to the prayers of the saints (incense) to make them more pleasing to God. I do not have to ask any heavenly saint to pray for me, I can pray for myself directly to the Father. Also I do not have to ask any earthly saint to pray for me. However we do, because we know we need the prayers of other and we know those prayers are of great benefit to our spiritual well being.

but I got stuck when she asked me why we pray to Mary & saints when we could directly pray to God?
This question reflects a false dichotomy. We do not ask one another to pray for us or with us because we are not praying “directly to God”. God has ordained that we be able to share in His ministry of intercession and reconciliation of Himself to the world.
I told her that they’re like the connector from us to God, but she didnt seem to get it… how should I explain this?
Use the example of Peter’s shadow. Open to the book of Acts, and read the section where they came out in droves so that Peter’s shadow might fall upon them, so they might be healed. Why didn’t the people just stay home, and pray “directly to God” for healing? Because they understood that God’s healing power was flowing, and they wanted to get near the one through whom it was flowing. God has always used people this way. It does not take anything away from Him. It allows us to participate in His blessing.
& same for confession, why do we have to talk to priests when God could just forgive us?
Another false dichotomy. Jesus manifests Himself to us in the person of the priest. He did this because He knows how important it is to hear “your sins are forgiven” in our ears.
I guess protestants don’t really like the idea of …connecting? (that’s how i understand it as…)
They don’t believe in the communion of saints, by and large, and they underestimate the value the Aposltes placed upon the Body of Christ, and how God has designed it so that we need one another.

Scripture says that the effectual fervent prayers of the righteous avail much. Who can be more righteous than those who are already in heaven?

With all due respect to all who pray in whatever fashion, and to whatever deity they believe and have faith in, I offer my two cents(as opposed to two mites,Luke 21:2); which I do not ask others to believe as I do. Anyway, all the verses pertaining to the Ark of the Covenant, were from the Old Testament, and were part of the Old Covenant! When Christ died on the Cross, and was subsequently resurected, believers were able to do what, in the OT, was only available to priests; enter the Holy of Holies:thumbsup:. It’s not so much that we non-catholics disrespect or dismiss Mary’s role in God’s great plan of salvation, we just don’t, at least me personally, do not feel the NEED to pray through Mary, or any other saint. In John 16:23-26, Jesus tells us that because of Him, we are able to approach the Father, and that if we ask for whatever it may be, in Jesus’s Name, we will receive. So, as a content, confident, and blessed believer(denomination not relevant), I know that when I pray, I am talking directly to my Heavenly Father, through Jesus!:thumbsup:So,please do not take it as a personal affront to your religion, if we don’t pray through Mary; we stilllove and respect our God, and believe that Mary is important:):):)🙂
