When someone challenged her, she said that she had found Protestants in general friendlier, that they seemed happier to be there, that they sang hymns with more verve, that less was read from a liturgy and more seemed to come from the heart, that the pastor prayed extemporaneously and included the needs of the moment, that 'passing the peace' wasn't so much a ritual but everyone got up and walked around, obviously so pleased to see onee another. etc.
The discussion continued, but her remarks remain with me. I wonder how CAF posters would have responded to her.
When somebody brought up the Eucharist, she said that Protestants have communion, too, but it seemed less formal, open to all regardless of church connection. When somebody brought up the authority of the church, she hesitated but said she was coming to the conclusion that there was not one true church so much as there were true people, people true to the gospel, who may disagree on different things but are united by their love of Christ. She was attending some Bible study group at the church and was impressed by how the opinion of everyone was respected, even when they disagreed with the pastor or study group leader.
Happy New Year!
