I am a married Catholic woman in my fifties and a housewife living in a small town. I find that most people my age work full-time and are very busy during the week, I volunteer through my Church but find most of the ladies in my church are all older than me, nice but much older, while I was trying to seek more friendships of people my age I decided to join another church group in my small town, they meet regularly for coffee and to discuss the Bible, show videos etcetera, it is a Protestant based Church. I noticed a few times, little subtle things were said that minimized Our Blessed Lady, but I thought to myself, did I maybe hear that wrong? Today I attended the church group and there was a video for us to watch, the woman speaking began to talk about how if you are Catholic, you go to a Priest for forgiveness, but we know (at their Church) we don’t need a priest we go straight to Jesus and ask for forgiveness.
It felt like a slap in the face, again, yet another put down against the Catholic Church!! I very quietly took my purse, stood up and left the room. I did not utter a word. I very quietly left on very shaky legs, I had tears in my eyes. I feel very disappointed that once again there was a jab at the Catholic Church, a subtle one, they always are, but it was there. I feel very much alone in my small town, I hoped to make some new friends and I feel now I could never return to that church group. I have to make this decision but it will also mean walking away from friendships which I know will die off if I don’t return. Why is it so difficult for other Churches to stay away from the “put down the Catholics” mentality. Any advice please.Thank you

Enormous sympathy. I am involved in some ministries with my husband’s church, and face similar digs. One guy outright casually mentioned that the Pope was the anti Christ. The vicar often says the Catholic way is to earn your salvation. And so it goes on.
None of it is personal as not a lot of people know I am becoming Catholic, but it is borne most generally out of ignorance. It stings! I do my best to be a good witness to truth - speaking out when necessary (CAF is a great resource for learning how to do this winsomely) - but oftentimes people who do know about my Catholic connection will moderate their words when they are around me because they respect that I am ‘walking the walk’ by being involved in good works. It is difficult, and you have my prayers.

Because it is easier than looking at one’s own church. Because it is easy to believe lies (and tell them) when you know nothing about the subject.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. Does the group know you’re Catholic? Did anyone come after you when you left, to make sure you were all right and/or try and persuade you to stay?

I can relate some to your situation. I’m in my forties and don’t work, so I became active in my parish. While my town isn’t exactly small, it’s every bit as isolating as a small town can be when you’re the only one of your kind. I am the only American in the parish. Heck, I’m the only native speaker of English in the parish. I’m surrounded by nice elderly ladies whose language I butcher daily in my attempts to communicate with them. Nevertheless, it hasn’t occurred to me to turn to the Protestants for fellowship. I choose instead to forge relationships with the nice elderly ladies. I love hearing about their families. My former assistant (I’m the head sacristan) has seven children and 23 grandchildren! She always has some wonderful story to share. We pray together, attend Mass together, rejoice in each others’ happiness, support each other in times of difficulty. I haven’t seen a reason to look elsewhere just because of the difference in our ages. I would certainly rather spend time with like-minded people who aren’t my age than with Catholic bashers who are.

You should never be surprised when the world attacks you for belonging to Christ’s Church. Rather, Christ tells us that we should rejoice when the world attacks us.

As a practical matter, many Protestants recognize that the schisms among Christian groups are very grave matter, so they feel the need to make justifications for them. You should not leave quietly, but should tell these people exactly why you are leaving, because of the grave evil of schism. These women, who you thought were Christians, are involved in the gravest Satanic evil, and probably do not even recognize it as such.

Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 5:
11“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 10:
16“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues. 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death. 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

For what it’s worth, I see much LESS of this from people at other Churches than I used to. …unless perhaps it’s from Catholics who have abandoned the practice of their Faith to join other religious communities.

Those (mainly those who were never Catholic to begin with) I know who attend non-Catholic communities --and who are actually informed about what the Catholic Church actually believes-- are more likely to speak against the practices of individual Catholics than against the Church as a whole.

The answer is simple. Educate yourself in apologetics so that when the opportunity arises to clarify some grossly misinterpreted point or counter an outright lie, you can do so with charity, gentleness and grace.
God bless you.
“when they hate you all because of Me, blessed are you”.

They often need to be anti-Catholic because their very existence depends on the wrongness of the Catholic Church. If the Catholic Church is not wrong, which means its claims to possess the fullness of truth are valid, then their sects have no reason to exist, and in fact, they would have the moral obligation to come into full communion with the Church.

I’m sorry that you were put in a position as such, but it’s kind of a two way street.

I’ve often asked a similar question, sometimes even on here, “Why do Catholics bash other churches”. I’ve read some pretty wild stuff written on here about the church I grew up in, not been treated the best in the Parish my wife and kids are members at, as well as heard some interesting things at church with my wife and kids when the person talking to us hadn’t realized that I’m not Catholic.

From what I’m told, you can’t base a whole religion or denomination on a few people. There’s bad apples everywhere.

Self-defense. If the Catholic Church is not wrong, then those other churches are. Separation must be justified.

Simply for the same reason the Catholic Faith “bashes” other Churches; for not recognizing their own failures, inconsistencies, and hypocrisies while claiming immunity from the same in themselves.

I don’t think this was a case of a bad apple, it was actually a video that
was being shown and the person in the video was doing the talking, the
ladies are all very nice at the group but I am the only Catholic one there
and they are aware of that. I guess the answer to this would be, don’t make
the mistake of trying to become involved in other Church’s groups, they are
never going to see things any different than their Church way, because as a
previous person mentioned, that would make their way wrong. A huge Learning
lesson for me today, thank you for all responses.

Convert here, my dad and grandfather are ministers in non-Catholic Christian denominations. Maybe it is the stripe of people, because I sort of cringe to hear “always bash”. It is rare in real life, and usually comes from those who are less theologically educated in my experience.

Be salt and light to everyone.

What you explain is much the same that I and my neighbor have run into at the Catholic church my wife and kids are members at. They are a very “if you’re not Catholic we want nothing to do with you”. I was told on here that I can’t judge all Parrish’s by the actions of one, or a few bad apples in one Parrish. Just giving the same advice I’ve received here. But, like you said, it’s the same reason that I’m not active at their church from volunteering through Family Faith Formation. I’m the only non-Catholic one, and everyone knows it. But it is what it is. If you were to come to my church back home, you’d never be singled out, treated different, or hear anything anti-Catholic of the sort. My wife loves my church back home, and she’s treated like family. There’s bad churches out there and good ones…just depends, but it definately isn’t a one way street. It’s more like why do some churches always bash others is the real question.

You went to a Protestant bible study and their materials did not support Catholic understanding.
I am uncertain why that would be a surprise.

THANK YOU

The answer to your OPQ is that because in TRUTH, there can be but One True, God, Faith and Church; and that both the bile and historical evidence PROVE This reality [which they are literally incapable of grasping… impeded by GOD; until and unless they turn to HIM seeking HIS truths]

Logic alone ought to confirm this fact:

How many DIFFERENT sets of faith beliefs can GOD hold as HIS Truth? [ONLY One]

The RCC alone can be PROVEN to date DIRECTLY back to the apostles [the bible BTW is a CATHOLIC BOOK], so the RCC existed for some 1,500 years before Luther [a catholic priest] , founded to days Protestantism.

So the current issue is how to these thousands of competing churches justify themselves and there very existence as a “Christian -Church” … To do so they MUST discredit the RCC.

The FOUNDER of CAF;Karl Keeting, [now retired], wrote a wonderful book on this topic which cab be GOOGLED: “Catholicism & Fundamentalism” …The ATTACK on Romanism by ‘Bible Churches’.

I suggest you get it and read it.

“TRUTH” as defined by the Dictionary can only be what it is: SINGULAR Per defined issue.
Denial or reinvention of TRUTH is also the very reason non Catholic Christians are unable to actually discern GOD’S and the Bibles FULL teachings correctly.

Father John Hardon [a former mentor of mine and one of the most respected theologians of the 20th Century] taught this about TRUTH

"Truth is the condition of grace, it is the source of grace, it is the channel of grace, it is the Divinely Ordained condition of grace."

It is precisely because they do not have the Fullness of GODS truths, that they have to attack Catholicism who does have the Fullness of God’s truth"

Matt.16 Verses 15 to 19
[15] He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” [16] Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” [17] And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. [18] And I tell YOU, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build MY CHURCH [SINGULAR], and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. [19] I will give YOU [SINGULAR… ALL OF]] the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever YOU bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever YOU loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

In closing I would share, that it MAY NOT be prudent to attend the meeting you describe. Please PRAY much about it.

Unless your equipped to explain [factually] the faith and defend it when necessary; you put yourself at risk.

God Bless you,
Patrick

Thank you Patrick for that, much appreciated. I have already made that
decision.

Might I point out that you ruined your community when you - a sinner - joined it? And sarcasm, snarkiness and cynicism were not taught by Christ.

To what end does your point seek? I was not trying to be sarcastic, snarky, or a cynic. I was simply answering the question with what I consider to be a true statement. Faiths “bash” faiths out of ignorance. Just as you apparently have done in responding to my post.

Woh, those last few comments are getting nasty. Are you saying I ruined
the Catholic Answers community?,what??
