The World does not love truth. Therefore they will attack it wherever they find it. But that attack will not always look the same. So Pope Benedict XVI was attacked as a harsh legalist because he was clear and eloquent. Pope Francis is gentle and kind, and the attack comes in the form of using his occasional lack of clarity to paint him as a prop for the anti-Catholics by suggesting he is saying things to undermine the faith.
Neither of these attacks are fair or accurate, but we are not talking about people responding to the Pope in a vacuum, with neutrality. They come with an agenda, and it seems to me the agenda is very rarely the truth.
Frankly, I pay not the slightest attention to any media reports about what the Pope has said and generally just go on the Vatican Website or wait for transcripts and read comments in context. I never, ever give any credence to news stories consisting of third parties claiming that Pope Francis has told them that Catholic doctrine is flat out wrong in a private phonecall or interview. Utter, total cobblers, either misremembered or simple lies.
