which is followed by Revelation 12:1-5, And a great sign appeared in heaven: A woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars: 2 And being with child, she cried travailing in birth, and was in pain to be delivered. 3 And there was seen another sign in heaven: and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads, and ten horns: and on his head seven diadems: 4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to be delivered; that, when she should be delivered, he might devour her son. 5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with an iron rod: and her son was taken up to God, and to his throne.
Correct me if I am wrong, your church doesn’t interpret this to be Mary! Only Israel or New Jeruselem

Salome is Mary’s sister!

see…

**John 19:25 **(New King James Version)

25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus 1.)His mother, and 2.)His mother’s sister, 3.)Mary the wife of Clopas, and 4.)Mary Magdalene.

Compared to Mark 15:
40Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were 4.)Mary Magdalene, 3.)Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and 2.) Salome.

So including 1.)Mary, Christ mother that’d be 4.
also…
Matt 27:
55Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56Among them were 4.)Mary Magdalene, 3.) Mary the mother of James and Joses, 2.)and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

And again 1.) Mary His mother…

Salome was the mother of James and Joses, wife of Zebedee and sister to Mary mother of Christ.

Essentially John was given the care of Aunt Mary upon Christs’ crucifixion.
You are correct. Mmph, so then James, the Greater isn’t Jesus’ brother then. Just cousin.

Correct me if I am wrong, your church doesn’t interpret this to be Mary! Only Israel or New Jeruselem
The Catholic Church from her tradition does interpret this woman as Mary. The interpretation can be view as Church, Mary, and Israel,

The woman is Mary because it this woman gave birth to a male child who will rule all nations. Second, we see the child taken up to heaven and place on a throne. Who is this Male Child, Jesus. Who gave birth to Jesus? Mary.

It wasn’t the Church who gave birth to Jesus, and it wasn’t Israel who gave birth to Jesus either.

The Book of Revelation can be interpret in literal and symbolic terms. So the Catholic intepretation is never wrong concerning this woman clothed with the sun…

So, you don’t believe there are any human beings in Heaven?
What??? of course I do! but heaven is not on earth, omnipresent meaning all around us. everywhere.
We Catholics believe that the gates of Heaven were opened up for human beings to enter in there, when Jesus rose from the dead in His human body.
He ASCENDED…^

He ASCENDED…^
Jesus died and after 3 days rose from the dead…and then he ascended into heaven.

Omnipresent is all around but you false to realized that saints in heaven are with angels, and with God. Heaven is outside time and space. They can see things we can’t see. We on earth are limited to the physical realm. The material world.

I think what this comes down to is that most Catholics are cultural Catholics. They aren’t Catholic because they have strong faith, or put that much into it, or anything of the sort. They’re Catholic because they were born Catholic.

In the same way that lots of Irish people have “IRL” stickers on their cars or that lots of people of other cultural backgrounds have things in their yards, or on their walls, or on their cars that they see as a signifier of their background, many of these rather unconcerned Catholics have Mary statues because, well, Mary is the “Catholic symbol.”

Judging Marian devotion by these people is not that much different from judging Christianity from all the people that wear crosses on their necks, or that own Bibles. It’s just not a fair sample.

That’s a good argument for committing suicide, atheism, etc. As follows:

If “most Catholics are cultural Catholics”, that makes them sinners: but sinners go to Hell, therefore CCs are going to Hell. But if they are going to Hell, CCs might as well sin while they have time to do so, since they are for the chop later on. These implications are full of temptations for faith.

Saying the Rosary is no proof of faith, nor is going to Mass, nor is any other such item; taken together, they may mean something, but they are no proof of having or exercising faith; they can quite well be a substitute for faith. The OP is quite right - it cannot be proved that someone is a Christian. Nor need it be. ##

Hello,
As a Protestant I don’t know any who hate Mary. We see her as the Virgin Mother of Jesus. That is reverence. After that the focus is on Jesus. “NO ONE get to the Father but through me” Jesus said. That is why Protestants do not understand praying to Mary. Jesus also taught us how to pray when he taught us the Lord’s Prayer “Our Father who art in heaven” not Mary or any of the saints who art in heaven. I mean no disrespect, I am just trying to show you why protestants do not get Mary or saint veneration. Also it seems weird when on the news you see people flocking to see a stain that looks like the Virgin Mary. Thats all. Only God knows if you are truly saved, and that will be between you and God on judgment day, no matter how nice you appear to all of us on earth.
God Bless

I came into this thread very late in the game, but as a former Baptist, I felt I should reply. I was a Baptist for 20 years, so maybe I wasn’t privy to all the adult conversations or the adult Bible studies or whatever.

However, in my experience as a Baptist, my impression of the Baptist’s view of Mary is that, while she was the mother of Jesus, any virgin could have filled that role. Jesus did not need Mary to accomplish His mission. I do recall a little emphasis on this point, and as I remember it was to show that worship of Mary, or indeed anyone but Jesus, was wrong.

With this baggage, I have a little twinge in my gut when I call Mary “our life, our sweetness and our hope.” I feel like those words should apply specifically to Jesus. Nevertheless, I say the Rosary every day, and continue to say those words because the Church encourages us to do so.

I also am disturbed by what does appear to be Marian worship by some Catholics. I remember reading in a traditional Catholic article that Marian worship is indeed frowned upon by the Church. I think they used the phrase “Mariology,” but while typing this it sounds more like a term to describe the **study **of Mary, not the worship of her.

The Catholic Church from her tradition does interpret this woman as Mary. The interpretation can be view as Church, Mary, and Israel,

Correction: some Catholics do - not the tradition of the CC, however. That it has to be Mary is the opinion of a coterie of a vocal group of over-zealous enthusiasts

##And Mary did not have wings, though the woman does - so it can’t be her either ##

The Book of Revelation can be interpret in literal and symbolic terms. So the Catholic intepretation is never wrong concerning this woman clothed with the sun…

The Book of Revelation can be interpret in literal and symbolic terms. So the Catholic intepretation is never wrong concerning this woman clothed with the sun…
Rev 12:
And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman, who brought forth the man child: 14 And there were given to the woman two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the desert unto her place, where she is nourished for a time and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
Yes the woman being send to the desert is the account when Mary, and Joseph and Jesus went to Egypt to escape the persecution of Herod.
And the serpent cast out of his mouth after the woman, water as it were a river; that he might cause her to be carried away by the river…
I can’t interpret this one. Too much symbolicism.
And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the river, which the dragon cast out of his mouth. 17 And the dragon was angry against the woman: and went to make war with the rest of her seed, who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. 18 And he stood upon the sand of the sea
The offspring are Christians who have given testimony o Jesus Christ. So this speaks of the Church. I do believe the woman is Mary, Church and Israel. So no intepretation is wrong

Since Mary being called blessed is scriptural I would be suprised that someone would have a problem with that unless it was in the midst of an argument and they were responding to what they see as an over reaction to Mary in Catholic theology. In other words, perhaps they lost their head for a minute.
what is an “over reaction to Mary”?

Code:
Mary was described by God as “highly favored” she had MUCH GRACE and Grace is unmerited favor, meaning that it is something we receive despite the fact that we do not deserve it.
Although Mary is Blessed Jesus himself said in Luke 11:27 On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it. He had a great opportunity to declare that Mary was indeed worthy of praise and adoration instead his response was obedience to God’s Word was **MORE IMPORTANT **than being the woman who gave birth to Him.

The Apostles nowhere give Mary a prominent role. Mary’s death is not recorded in the Bible. Nothing is said about Mary ascending to Heaven, or having any form of exalted role in Heaven. She is **BLESSED! but don’t give her more than she deserves, Jesus is who that belongs too. **
Well, that is more generous than most Sola Scripturas will allow!

Mary was an ordinary human female whom God chose to use in a extraordinary way. she needed Jesus Christ as her Savior, just like everyone else (Ecclesiastes 7:20; Romans 3:23; 6:23 1 John 1:8

Of course! Otherwise, why would the scripture say “I rejoice in God, my Saviour?”

Jesus definitely loved and cherished His mother, but your reasons above are only assumed.
ARe you willing to understand why Catholics believe as they do? Or are you hardened against the teaching because of your Sola Scriptura?

Ditto. This is an offense against the truth, a grave matter. While having been around Protestants all my life, I’ve never heard a single expression of hatred to the Blessed Mother. In all the Marian debates I’ve participated, I’ve never read a single post that expressed hatred for her. If this person exists, the person is such a rare exception to be meaningless.
Perhaps a different wording might be better? “Why do Protestants hate Catholics for devotion to Mary?”

They distance themselves from what they think is Catholic teaching - or from actual Catholic teaching, not from Mary, per se.
It has been my experience that some, if not all, Protestants associate what the Church teaches about Mary with Satan. Their idea of Mary is a great sinner who had many children. Some even believe that Jesus rebuked and even went so far as to disown her.

I believe that what they are actually doing is projecting their hatred of Mary onto Jesus. In other words, they are doing what they wish Jesus did against own mother.
