Why do protestant ministers where the collars of a priest?

As has been pointed out it seems unlikely that modern clerical dress is the product of the Catholic (Roman Church). My understanding is that it was based on the dress of the time and that stuck (black being a reliable color/dye). It was professional dress of the 17th century with the collar reversed to show spiritual service.

You will find it among Catholics, some Eastern Orthodox, some Lutherans, most Anglicans, some Methodist, etc. It is in some ways a sacrifice to wear it since it does make you available and obvious. I recall the story of a Methodist minister who wore the collar. He checked into a hotel one day for business. The maid saw him leave in the morning in his collar. When he returned she had left him a note and desperately needed to speak to someone. The ONLY reason she knew to seek him out in her desperation was the collar. Had he not been wearing it…who knows. This story was related by the Methodist clergyman in a publication I read. It is becoming so much less common to see the collar even among Catholic priests outside of church. This is unfortunate.

OneTrueCathApos, I suspect that the clergyman who told you that he wore the collar to make himself look important was either joking or being somewhat sarcastic in response to your question. I suspect from some of your interactions here you presentation may not come across the way you are intending it to.

I’m not going to argue with you.
Is that the best you can do? An answer like that just shows how you don’t know why you are not in the church Jesus Christ established, or perhaps you have a more broader answer that you cannot say here. This question has nothing to do with an argument, but you will make it seem this way…typical…🤷

C’mon OTCA, the man doesn’t want to fight with you…why are you going for his neck? You are attempting to nullify a lot of great witness and character of your Catholic brethren. It’s just a collar nothing we can take with us to holy Mt. Zion.

Have a blessed day my friend!

How is the Reverand being savaged here? A question was only asked, he couldn’t answer it so, basically, his silence is my answer.

No he chose to ignore you putting words in his mouth and your caustic nature.

I know what you mean though about silence being an answer, much like your silence when you were
  • asked to show in the catechism where it says the CC is the only one that ‘‘tolerates’’ homosexuals as you claim
  • asked to show where it is in the Bible as you claim Jesus came to lead the jews to the gentiles
  • doubting the words of the Pope in relation to Orthodoxy having apoltolic succession
  • declaring a muslim in hell when even the catholic church does not dare declare anyone in hell
… your list of ‘‘silences’’ in answering questions put directly to you when you make false claims is almost endless

If you don’t want to argue, why are you putting words into my hands that I never typed?
Greg, you are wasting your time with charity and apologetics with OTCA. She is a bully, picks and chooses the quotes she wants to hear, and plagiarizes unashamedly and often. Thankfully, most Catholics here are not like her. But she does give the ones here a bad name.

I would demur; she is no bully. Though not for want of trying.

So - let me get this straight.

We have someone who appears to look like a priest. At first glance, the majority of people in this country, if asked, would say that he is a Catholic priest (if he’s wearing either of the middle or right hand collars he has pictured). He is teaching heresy and leading people away from the fullness of Truth, while wearing garments that make him appear that he has the authority to teach the fullness of Truth (which only comes from the Catholic Church).

And no one has a problem with this???!!!

We have laws against impersonating a law enforcement officer for very valid reasons. A pity we can’t do the same with clerical garb that resembles that of the Catholic Church.

I will never understand why anyone who does not agree with the Catholic Church would ever want to look like they are part of it.

Seems the only ones here to throw stones are Protestants like yourself. Give it a break.

I think people are getting waaaayy too wound up over a shirt and a collar.

It is clothing. Nothing more, nothing less, and as the good Reverend mentioned, it can afford him a certain amount of respect, and safety.

While I may disagree with the theology of different faiths, I still believe in being respectful and courteous, especially to their clergy. Just as i would expect them to be respectful to the Catholic clergy.

When I see an individual wearing a “collar”. I make no assumptions. I simply use the title Reverend. It is appropriate to most, if not all protestant ministers, and it certainly appropriate when addressing a Catholic priest. i.e. Reverend Father.

I have seen individuals go up to a person wearing a “collar”, and have addressed the person as “father”. I have heard them politely correct the individual, saying something like, “I am not a priest, but can I help you anyway?”

What I find amusing is the amount of contention by lay people about a protestant minister wearing a collar, but yet I don’t see that contention when Catholic clergy and protestant clergy interact.

God Bless all that serve our Lord.

The question was combative and embarrassing as it was off topic and had nothing to do with this thread.

What is so embarrassing about asking the Reverand why he isn’t in the church founded by Christ? Why is it embarrassing? Because he has a title of Reverand?
He shouldn’t be embarrassed by this at all. He should just give a clear cut answer. He must have reasons he cannot post here and I will leave it as that. But that would only show me he has something against the Catholic church.

So - the next time you are pulled over by a guy in a shirt with a badge on it and asked to get out of your car and into his - are you just going to do that without question and TRUST the uniform?

Why do we respect a man dressed in clerical garb? We respect them because they (may) have a role of authority. Where does this man get his authority FROM?

I never said anything about being disrespectful or rude to anyone.
