i saw a episcopalian church named after st. francis of assisi. i was offended somewhat. that’s like having a catholic church named after martin luther or calvin.

i guess they haven’t figured out that st. francis is catholic.

Since we are all worshipping the same God and are brothers and sisters in Christ why would it offend you for a church to choose a fellow christian they hold in high esteem to be the namesake for the building they worship the Almighty in?

I just don’t like this us against them attitude from protestants and catholics… We are all in the same family! Stop the bickering…

Just watch. Some Episcopalian is going to jump in here and say they are Catholic.

Episcopalian…Ahem…Lutheran actually 😉
But still a member of the Protestant Orthodoxy…

Again…let me say…All Roman Catholics are Catholic but not all Catholics are Roman Catholic…

Cute?

GKC quote:
….I puzzle over the concept “woman bishop”. I know not such a thing. Contravenes the apostolic tradition of the Church. Where do you find such a monster?

As I just said elsewhere, she is a female functionary in the TEC. Often appears in public in sacerdotal garments and often in a miter. I have no idea why she does these things. Why do you ask? Unquote

She is the 800 pound gorilla in the living room.

GKC seems to be in a state of denial, or he is pulling our leg:

"Katharine Jefferts Schori, D.D., Ph.D. (born March 26, 1954 in Pensacola, Florida) is the Presiding Bishop of Episcopal Church in the United States of America. She is the first woman elected primate in the Anglican Communion.

maranatha
Primate she is. But she is not a bishop, in apostolic succession, as I said, with explanation, in my 9:06 AM post yesterday. She is a functionary in TEC.

Do you skip alternating paras, when reading, or something?

You do not see our problem? She is described as “Presiding Bishop…” in official documents!! That you deny adherence or submission to her ‘particular brand’ of Anglicanism, does not alter THE FACT that she is a Bishop!

To use an analogy, if The Catholic Church is the main tree, and Anglican is ONE of its branches, you’re further out from the actual branch again, amongst the “little branches” perhaps even a “leaf.”!!

Even with a powerful torch, (Catholic understanding) I’m trying to illuminate your position so I can either discuss it with you or make some address of your assertions, but you are (so) lost among the foliage of greenery that I can’t tell which ‘position’ (leaf) you are!

You use colorful mixed metaphors. So, in your view, she is a bishop, in apostolic succession? Which is the only sort of bishop that I recognise? Which is what I was talking about with mfrgin?

They figured out that the Reformation broke the chain that allowed canonizations of saints. Episcopalians accept saints canonized before the Reformation, and lately, they have been dropping newbies into the calendar. One of my favorites, when I was an Episcopalian, was The Martyrs of Uganda.

It is NOT like a Catholic Church being named for Martin Luther. Anglicans consider themselves to be a true branch off the trunk of the greater catholic tree. They do not disparage the pre-Reformation Church but retain as much of it as possible considering the exigencies of their Protestant baggage.

Ask any Episcopalian. She is more than a functionary (whatever that is).

In 2001, she was elected and consecrated Bishop of Nevada.

If she is not a bishop, then neither is Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Catholics may say he is not a bishop in Apostolic Succession, but he claims, and everyone agrees, he is a bishop, and the chief religious figure of the Church of England, and symbolically the head of the Anglican Communion…

You have to stop this denial.

She GKC is not an Episcopalian, he does not consider this woman to be valid. We do not either.

Edwin has explained it all pretty well but I’ll throw in my two cents:

The RCC doesn’t have the market cornered on historical personages of heroic or exemplary holiness.

You really need to get over yourselves and start seeing the church as “us” rather than “us vs. them”.

Excepting EO, we, as Catholics, do not believe that any consecrated Protestant bishop to be validly ordained.

Bishop Katharine Schori has the same validity in Orders as the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Some how I missed that presentation. Your explanation is simplistic. You neglect the first 1600 years of our Catholic existence. The Reformers did not accept the ‘sanctity’ of our saints, since we claimed that they merited their reward. They tore out our altars, pulled down our statues, and erased our devotions.

To the Reformers, we were all guaranteed heaven, so there was not purpose to this distinction of ‘saints’ and sanctity.

For the moment, I am not going along with this ‘we are all the same’. To be all the same, they have to become members of the Mystical Body of Christ.

Im over it - since Vatican 2. BTW two cents is not worth what it used to be worth.

How do you define “the Church”?

He’s no more in denial than you are. You don’t think either she or the ABC is a valid bishop. He thinks the ABC is but KJS isn’t. I think they both are. None of us are in denial–we just have different theologies of what it takes to be a bishop.

Actually the difference between you and GKC may not be strictly speaking theological. It’s more one of historical fact–did the Anglicans break the line of succession or not. But GKC can speak more authoritatively than I on that one.

If the Orthodox Church (I say that because I know you don’t think this could ever happen in Catholicism) were to choose a woman as bishop, wouldn’t you make a distinction between her and the male bishops of the Orthodox Church, whom you regard as valid albeit schismatic bishops? GKC is doing exactly the same thing.

Edwin
