When I was a Baptist, back before I got saved, we used to say prayers to pieces of cloth.

I never could find a Biblical reason for it.

Can anyone help me?

The use of prayer cloths and shawls, is based on Acts 19:11-12: "God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them."

True, but very Catholic - most Protestants, especially low-church, reject sacramentals of all kinds. I spent my formative years as a Baptist and never heard of any such ritual - of course one of the truest generalizations about Baptists is that you can’t generalize about Baptists!

I wonder if Cluny can share any more details?

I guess that would depend greatly on which Baptist church you were attending.😉

There are some who want Catholics (or just any one other than themselves) to back up their actions biblically, even when it’s not reasonable, yet they won’t do it themselves

It confuses me.

BTW: When you say ‘before I got saved’, I don’t get it. As a Catholic myself, I don’t believe that any one is ‘saved’ before death. From where it’s posted, it makes me think you were saying ‘before I became a Catholic’, but that’s a very un-Catholic tradition.

What was the reason your pastor gave you for having you do that?

Our Baptist church never did anything like that, and they would have been horrified at the suggestion!

There used to be this strange preacher on tv who sent out prayer cloth to those who donated to his ministry. I am not certain but I think that the prayer cloth was ‘blessed’ or somehow used by the pastor. It has been many years since I saw him, so I might have some of the details confused, but I know that he sent out prayer cloths.

So, would my former Baptist Church. But I have visited others with some rather odd beliefs. In the south east United States some of the churches have odd beliefs.🤷

Just asking did the pieces of cloth come from a preacher by the name of Don Stewat that is on TV

If I remember correctly, I believe Oral Roberts used prayer cloths sometimes during his fundraising efforts.

I have never seen them used in actual churches, but rather confined to television ministries, and their fundraising efforts.

Protestants will readily admit that, based on Acts 19:11-12, this can be a medium for a miracle:

Why not also these?

Sorry but I’m completely confused by this question. I have a Baptist friend and she has never talked about this.

We, as Catholics, venerate relics and it is scriptural - Peter’s handkerchief etc but I thought all protestant churches completely decried this practice.

This is mainly a Pentecostal practice.Baptist practice is rare. It is because of Paul anointing the handkerchief. If you watch Kenneth Hagin at the site below in the services it will not be unusual to see the practice towards the end of the services. Hopes this helps answer your question as you can see he is controversial, as is the charismatic movement.

ahhh, sort of like giving crucifixes blessed by a priest someone considered especially holy. I’ve received one of those myself.

NO Protestants don’t readily admit any such things. One or more Protestant denominations may, but there is not Protestants as any unified group. It would be best to learn the basic denonominiations such as Baptist, Lutheran, Episcopalian, Methodist, etc. You cannot make blanket statement about “all Protestants” There is a thread on this presently in this forum section. You are good proof of what the OP was complaining about.

I’m not talking about prayer cloths.

I’m talking about something else.

Vaction Bible School was the only time there was a set liturgy–that is, a prescribed and fixed order for worship.

These pieces of cloth were brought up before the assembled students and exposed with great solemnity at the front of the church for adoration.

They were worshipped with ritual gestures executed in unison on command of the leader: “Attention! Salute! Pledge!” and we recited the prescribed prayers.

The funny thing is that both of these prayers to the pieces of cloth began with the same words: I pledge allegiance.

If Catholics and Orthodox worship Mary, pictures, statues, or ANYTHING but God, then Protestants, especially Baptists, say prayers to pieces of cloth.

You can’t condemn the one and approve the other!

Think about it.

Wow, Cluny, I have never heard of this as a former Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, (you get the picture) however, I am not saying something like this doesn’t happen.

I did have a friend who received a handkerchief from another friend who was a minister of a non-denominational church …

What type of Baptist church were you raised in?

We had sunday school, vacation bible school and we always had a Christian flag there … do you think it may have something to do with that?
