Why do Protestants presume to know Catholic doctrine and dogmas when they don't really know it?

Where is this a requirement for church leadership?
It is a discipline taught by the church, not a dogma. As such, it can change. But, since neither Paul nor Christ were married, except to the church (here we go again!), it is thought best that priests follow that example and become espoused only to the church.

Paul nor Jesus nor anyone apostle never made celibacy a requirement for leadership. What the catholic church has done on this issue is to disregard the scriptures on this matter. Peter himself was married.
Excuse me? Where on earth did you get such an idea? Did you read (Matthew 19:12) “For some are eunuchs because they were born that way; others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it.” Even though Christ’s words have been translated here, it seems clear enough. Look at your bible, it says the same thing.

What you allege then, is that the Catholic church disregarded scripture and instead, followed the teaching of Christ. Are you condemning scripture here?

If you look at those passages in scripture you don’t see how the changing of the bread and wine is done in the catholic sense though. It does not say much about it at all.
Thank you, Lord, for giving me patience. I am on my way to Sainthood! Q: How can you drink judgment/condemnation/damnation unto yourself by unworthily eating bread, drinking wine and remembering Jesus? A: You can’t.

You CAN if it actually IS the Body and Blood of Christ. That is what Paul was speaking of. If you think otherwise, you are interpreting your own scripture-a grave mistake.

Go to John 6. The whole chapter is a discourse on Christ’s Body and Blood. John was “the beloved disciple”. Christ gave His mother Mary to John as His last physical act on earth before dying on the cross. John had a special relationship with Christ, and wrote specifically about the Body and Blood.

Look at: Genesis 14:17-19 (New International Version) (NIV)

"After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth”.

Remember, Christ is a priest on the order of Melchizedek, (Hebrews 6:20), not on the order of Aaron. Melchizedek was the priest of Father Abraham and King of Salem, which became Jerusalem. Melchizedek is the only king who was priest and the only priest who was king in the entire bible. He instituted bread and wine as a sacrifice to God. To most minds, this is clearly a foreshadowing of Christ.

Why do you ask us about Communion, which the Catholic church has always done, and not ask your own church why they gave up communion? Not bread and wine memorials-the actual Body and Blood. Is it only to be “un-Catholic”?

I’m referring to the real leaders in the catholic church who have the power to affect things. What your church has done is to outright disqualify a man from this kind of leadership just because he is married. There is not one office of church leadership in the NT where celibacy is a requirement.
It is documented in a verse that Evangelicals de-emphasize. It is called the “Power to bind and loose” Christ gave it to Peter in Matthew 16:19. It refers to the power Peter, and his successors, have to shape church practices (NOT dogma). It is not limited to just that. Christ said “Whatever you bind on earth is bound in heaven” What does that mean in the Evangelical church? Anything at all? Was Jesus just waxing poetic, or did he really mean it?

On the contrary, councils held in union with the Pope that teach to the whole of the Church on matters of faith and morals ARE held to be infallible. The college of Bishops, united and teaching together with the Pope at their head, is regarded as infallible.

Further, even the disciplines of the Church enjoy a negative infallibility, that is to say that at the least, they cannot lead the faithful astray.
Councils in and of themselves are not infallible. In union with the Pope, they are.

But that doesn’t explain Ex-Catholics. They’ve been taught otherwise. Do they just cleanse their minds of Catholic teachings, or do they just follow the new crowd?

I think most of them never really understood the Teachings at all. Then, having been poorly catechized, they become prey of the ignorant and malicious. That was the case for me, anyway.

Or, just the well-intentioned. But, we know where that road leads…

Look at the context of Matthew 19:1-12. Its not about church leadership but about being married or not and the kingdom.

No. I’m saying the catholic church in many cases has circumvented the scriptures to support some of their doctrines and practices.

Lets see how this works out. Paul in his letters lays out the qualifications for church leadership. Part of the qualifications was the man was to be married. The catholic church comes along later a overturnes the apostolic teaching (Paul). Paul was an apostle of Christ and carries the authority of Christ. You evidently must have a greater authority than an apostle of Christ since your church has circumvented this teaching by making celibacy a requirement and effectively locking out married men for the mere fact they are married. This is a classic example of the catholic church contradicting the scriptures.
It is not limited to just that. Christ said “Whatever you bind on earth is bound in heaven” What does that mean in the Evangelical church? Anything at all? Was Jesus just waxing poetic, or did he really mean it?
What is the context of the passage for this in Matthew 18:15-20? Its about church discipline. To say it means something else is to pervert the scriptures.

The part about the person to be married having ONE wife reflects the rather common practice (Jesus refers to it earlier when he speaks about divorce) of the time for a man to have more than one wife–meaning, he married a wife, divorced her, married another, divorced her, etc. Why, we hear in Scripture that Moses permitted men to divorce but Christ tells us this is not so.

Therefore, any candidate to be considered for orders must be, if married, the husband of ONE wife. . .otherwise, he is in an illegal, immoral marital situation.

Further, any SINGLE MAN looking to enter orders is thereby advised that, if he wishes to marry, he must also be prepared to accept being the husband of only ONE wife.

Do you believe then that being married with children was used as a criteria to determine what kind of leader that man would be?

No, otherwise we would not have much of the New Testament as Paul would not have qualified as a leader since he was unmarried.

One wife means that He could have no MORE than one. It did not mean he HAD to have one, and in fact, Paul said it was BEST, to serve God unmarried.

1Cor 7:8-9

8]
To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is well for them to remain single as I do.

9] But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to be aflame with passion.

There is a short track on this from CA if you would like to read it. Lists scripture and the Catholic interpretation of them.

No, but that one could have only one wife or none as qualification. You’re jumping to conclusions:rolleyes: … If that!

It does not follow that if Paul was single ( we really don’t know for sure) it would not disqualify him. Paul was an apostle which was a unique and limited office in the NT church.

Look the primary teaching on church leadership in I Timothy 3:1-12 and you will find how he viewed married men with children as excellent canidates for leadership in the church.

i think i might have read it some time ago. I look at it again.

Have you ever heard of the Knights of Columbus? They’re certainly lay leaders within the Church. And Paul’s recommendation isn’t at all in refernce to leadership, only in conduction of everyday lives:rolleyes:

OK, so in addition to the Septuagint, you might as well rip out all of the Pauline letters, since, by your standard, he was an unmarried hypocrite.

Apparently you don’t believe him anyway, since 1 Corinthians 11 (as well as John 6) was devoted to the Lord’s supper and you have given that up. Please explain the contorted logic that redefines both of these scriptures: how can you drink judgment/damnation/condemnation unto yourself by “unworthily” eating bread and drinking wine while thinking of Jesus-UNLESS, it really IS the Body and Blood of our Lord. Something to ponder as you consider your mortality. I did.

How does this follow? If Christ instructed Paul who may have been single to make married men with children a good canidate leadership then how does that make him a hypocrite?

There is a lot here. Take John 6. Where is the eurachrist mention in that entire chapter?
If Jesus really is the bread and wine, then it follows that these elements are God. If this is correct, what characteristics of God does the bread and wine possess?

I’m referring to leadership in the catholic that nullifies him from leadership because he is married. No matter how qualified he is for the position he is disqualified immediately because he is married.

So you’re only referring to the priesthood, and you would seem to be inferring that the only power in the Church belongs to the clergy?

Not at all.
The latiy are the reason the clergy exist:rolleyes:
