Why do scientists want to prove we are an accident?

That is quite a leap from a little comment about some evidence to a large list of results of science. 😉
Just saying that critics of science must deal with the plain fact that it works spectacularly well as a means of gaining real knowledge compared with say, theology, philosophy or chicken entrails. 🙂

“knowing” that cellphones work and “knowing” that the universe are expanding, are as different as “knowing” that an electron exists, and is what you think is, and “knowing” that an elephant exists and is what you think it is…

Not neccesarily, it doesn’t. Regarding clearly physical properties of clealy physical objects - generally, you’re probably right. But science, especially historically, is far less reliable than perhaps we’re often led to believe

And compared to philosophy - you do realise that the scientific investigation is just a form of philosophical investigation, right? :rolleyes:

On the contrary, knowledge in all these domains is knowledge. For example, we know what electrons are and we know what their properties are and exactly how they will behave in a huge range of circumstances with a precision and a certainty that at least equals and in many cases exceeds anything we know about elephants.Without such a knowledge of the behaviour of electrons, and particularly their behaviour in semiconductors, we would have no cell phones. It’s your ignorance of how we acquire that confidence in our knowledge of electrons, or the expansion of the universe, and your unwillingness or inability to correct that deficiency that allows you to assert this fallacy over and over again.

Thing is that the only “point” you are making here is to argue from invincible ignorance of how various astronomical techniques are used to probe the properties of stars. You “point” is that we cannot know anything about them because they are far away (similar to the case of sub-atomic particles where you argue that we cannot know anything about them because they are so small, withoiut understanding the first thing about how their properties are determined). Your lack of knowledge of how these things are done does not constitute an argument.

What you mean is never coming up with anything that you are prepared to learn about or understand. That’s your loss. In that thread I suggested that you learn about how spectroscopy is used to probe the constituents of extra-solar bodies, which you obviously refuse to or can’t be bothered to do.
I don’t want to do an A-level - I’m just arguing particular points. Feel free to answer the question above! I understand you get very excited about all this stuff, and want everyboy else to as well, but more straightforward answers would be more effective

I thought we were talking stars, but we can discuss planets too. In the case of planets the answer is unequivocally no - we do not rely entirely on visual data for our knowledge about them. As for stars, unless you interpret “visual data” widely to mean all electromagnetic wavelengths, from radio waves, through microwave, infrared, visible (which is the only part of the EM spectrum to which the term “visual” is normally applied), ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays, which interpretation would be rather eccentric, then, again, the answer is no. Certainly we don’t know everything that we know about stars simply by looking at them with or without telescopes.

In other words, you can’t be bothered to learn anything about the subject, but you still feel that the dogmatic statements you make from your lack of understanding are somehow “arguments”. Don’t you think that’s rather contemptuous of science? Why do you feel so threatened by it?

By the way on the other thread you made this statement "Didn’t the Universe shrink about 10 years ago (or rather, wasn’t it decided that it was smaller than previously thought about 10 years ago)? " to which the answer is a plain no. Both threads are case studies in your being given evidence and refusing to engage with it and then inventing things without any justification in order to personally maintain an unjustifiable and flawed epistemology.

Right. So when these laser beams are hitting the protons to measure their characteristics, are they actually hitting protons which have been literally idenitified spacially, isolated physically and targetted seperately, or are they actually hitting atoms, which have been calculated to have such particles around them, the results of the collisions being calculated according to the understanding of their movements and features as calculated relatively to the atom? (If that makes sense… which I’m sure it won’t to hecd2 🤷)

I mentioned spectroscopy and you didn’t have the interest to find out how we determine the properties of stars with it, so why would me mentioning something else be different? Your original point wasn’t that what we know about stars all comes through visual data, but that we can’t know anything about stars because they are far away, which was, and is, wrong. And, as you now see, the other claim about visual data only is also wrong.

Yes, that’s what I’m saying: once the proposition that the universe is expanding was accepted it, scientists have not changed that view.

So what? Anyone who thinks they know that the Higgs boson exists is talking nonsense. The Higgs boson has not been detected as yet, so you won’t find anyone working in the fields of high energy physics or theoretical physics who has claimed that they know the Higgs boson exists. Actually, this is a rather good example of how science works to verify its propositions. Until such time as the postulated Higgs is detected, no-one who knows what they are talking about will say that they know it exists.

Gluons, the gauge bosons of quark interaction have been detected via interaction, but not as free particles. However, the other gauge bosons (the photon, the W and Z bosons) have been detected and their properties measured. Same is true of many of the fermions: the electron, muon and tau and their neutrinos, and all six flavours of quark. Also many of the commonly occurring composite particles of quarks have been detected and measured: nucleons (protons and neutrons), delta, sigma, xi and omega particles (the three quark or baryon particles); and many of the very large number of different two quark composites (mesons), so we know they exist.

But did it occur to you that the idea for, say, a computer chip, let alone designing it, fabricating it and making it work, depends entirely on having a darn good prior understanding of electrons?

In a broader context, you appear to be arguing that we must never act until we’re 100% certain that we know that we know that we know what we know, not exactly a philosophy for marines, football players or, come to think of it, anyone in the real world outside of the occasional navel gazing monk on top of a mountain and possibly your good self. 🙂

Some scientists maybe think God’s condom broke. I don’t know if this is a bad joke or what, but I had to say it. Most scientists today think that everything is reduced to sex. I know that God doesn’t use condoms. Is this joke disrespectful or am I just poking fun at certain people’s silly view of the universe

I once joked to a friend that most philosophy classes at secular school teach we are just an accident, like we were produced by a wet dream or something.

Yes, it’s messy and full of failures, but the fact that there can be sure-fire failures (guesses not born out by physical evidence) is why it’s so successful. Critics of science can have their day when philosophers land a ship on Mars and theologians rid the world of malaria.

Perhaps in a medieval university, but these days it’s rare to find zoology taught by the philosophy department or marine biologists trotting off for their essential primer on Wittgenstein. :rolleyes:

Rolling your eyes doesn’t really cut it with me since it denotes an unscientific attitude. Your lack of knowledge suggests to me that you spin things out in a way that suits your lack of understanding the truth. Let’s see if I can direct you in the proper direction. This clustering effect is the Higgs mechanism, postulated by British physicist Peter Higgs in the 1960s. The theory hypothesizes that a sort of lattice, referred to as the Higgs field, fills the universe. This is something like an electromagnetic field, in that it affects the particles that move through it, but it is also related to the physics of solid materials. Scientists know that when an electron passes through a positively charged crystal lattice of atoms (a solid), the electron’s mass can increase as much as 40 times. The same might be true in the Higgs field: a particle moving through it creates a little bit of distortion – like the crowd around the star at the party – and that lends mass to the particle.
Scientists at CERN use the enormous ALEPH detector in their search for the Higgs particle.
The question of mass has been an especially puzzling one, and has left the Higgs boson as the single missing piece of the Standard Model yet to be spotted. The Standard Model describes three of nature’s four forces: electromagnetism and the strong and weak nuclear forces. Electromagnetism has been fairly well understood for many decades. Recently, physicists have learned much more about the strong force, which binds the elements of atomic nuclei together, and the weak force, which governs radioactivity and hydrogen fusion (which generates the sun’s energy).

In fact, the search for the Higgs particle(s) is some of the most exciting research happening, because it could lead to completely new discoveries in particle physics. These results are based on data recorded during LHC running at an energy of 7 TeV in 2010 and 2011. The analysis uses 1.1 – 1.7 inverse femtobarns[1] (integrated luminosity) of data, depending on the channel — an inverse femtobarn corresponds to about 100 trillion proton-proton collisions.
CMS observes no convincing excess of events in the explored mass[2] range of 110-600 GeV (for full details see [HIG-11-022]). It should be noted that a modest excess of events is observed for Higgs boson masses below 145 GeV. During the ongoing LHC proton-proton data-taking period, expected to terminate at the end of 2012, CMS will record substantially more data that should be sensitive to observing a SM Higgs boson, if it exists, over the full range of possible masses.

Because scientists can’t prove that the power to choose is of the universe, nor the source thereof. So the only alterative is that life is a result of random circumstances. But yet every soul that is a scientist, knows, he has the power to chose to live.
 
This appears an easy question…

Has anyone said that most major discoveries by science are discovered by accident or unconscious musings? So, if so, why should the scientists not believe that the universe discovered itself by accident? Just like some people watching a Shakespearean play suspend disbelief to enjoy the play’s absurdities,improbabilities, and unreality, so it has become in vogue to suspend Christian beliefs while going about the work of science. Carl Sagan, a life long atheist, recanted on his beliefs of God just before he died.
