Why do some Catholics lean politically conservative?

You are conflating some things that are apples and oranges. Fact is, if you support the Democratic Party, you are supporting an organization that is foursquare in support of abortion.

We all have stuff about the parties and candidates we support that we don’t like. And if we support independents, we have to realize that our vote is like an arrow shot in the air. So the choices are:
  • Decide that pro- or anti- abortion is not as important as other things our party choice supports.
  • Not cast a vote at all, or not cast one that will actually matter.
People bristle at that and say, “But, but, but…” But do the math. That is the reality. Spinning it and obfuscating it does not change it. If I voted Democratic, I would at least have the guts to admit the fact that I’ve moved the pro-abortion cause forward, even if I do not agree with abortion. I would have the guts to own that.

As it is, I know that I go the other way causes me to support things I don’t agree with. But I have the guts to own it.

It is not for me to choose one life as having more dignity than another. The life in the womb is as important as the life of the children in Syria or world wide, whether they are escaping bombs or gangs…I happen to recognize ALL life, which is what the organization Democrats for Life do, I am not (as addressed for the 3rd time) a single issue voter. I have no difficulty in conscience being a Partisan. There were many ‘small’ Partisan groups in history that were on the right side of history!~
Arguing politics is futile. I simply see the Democratic party with all of its faults and it’s goodness doing the best for those caught in the middle of this current authoritarian a-moral style of government currently in power.

I get that. Like I said, own it. As for the government in power being a-moral, I don’t disagree. I just keep saying, “At least it’s not her.” And it seems a lot of Democrats don’t support her anymore either. She would have been full immoral.

Assume the issue that you don’t support is slavery or exterminating the Jews. Would you still support them?

I don’t agree that conservatives think government is bad or bad at things and then think that government does military well.

I think that conservatives think that government is good at some things, things which are in its domain, and bad at other things, which are not in its domain.

Military defense is in the domain of government–in the US specifically, in the domain of the federal government. And that is how it should be.

I hear very few conservatives say they want to completely dismantle the social safety net, but I do hear them say that 1. It should be handled more locally, and 2. That because it is the government running welfare, they cannot differentiate between those who need help and those who are enabled by government aid.

(I personally would add that aid should be tailored to the individual and not one-size-fits-all.)

Huh. I and many of my friends would be considered “left” (because we are not Republicans). We are far more pro-life than the Republican party.

I don’t know a single Republican that is against legal immigration
I’d suggest you google our Republican President’s plan to end “chain migration”. This is legal immigration and allowed his own in-laws to become citizens.

The President is definitely for Immigration Reform, which includes eliminating chain migration, immigration lotteries and other reasons.

The fact that the First Lady’s parents came here under those rules doesn’t mean they wouldn’t qualify under other rules. President Trump’s ideas are to encourage immigration among those who would not be a burden on the taxpayers and his in-laws wouldn’t have been a problem.

Back in New Testament times, during the ministry of Jesus and later with the Apostles, did they rail against Tiberius and later against Caligula insisted on social programs to alleviate poverty, illiteracy and other social problems?

Liberals are lumped in a group during these types of conversations because the numbers overwhelmingly support the ends we’re discussing, and because Democratic politicians also overwhelmingly support things like abortion / ssm.

As for the rest of your post, you simply cannot place material needs on the same level as the fundamental right to life. Both are important, but one necessarily takes precedent, because without it all other rights are meaningless.

Still not against legal migration. A change in policy and requirements does not equate to a rejection of the concept.

It’s interesting to hear a conservative speak of the Democratic platform as pro-choice after being reminded that individuals that lean left are not all this way. Conservatives are pro-individualism (rugged at that) except when they wish to make a point by lumping a group of individuals into a collective, with usually the most negative connotation’s…socialists, communists, abortionists, and every other “ist” one can think of. hahaha
I don’t care if someone is “legal” or not if there is a need. Sometimes the law is wrong under conditions where dignity is concerned. This would be similar to abortion, which is why the issue is Pro-life. The Shoah, Berlin in the 40’s, it was illegal to harbor Jews. Would you?
Who are the democrats in congress, and what are they always pushing for? Abortion, same-sex whatever, restrictions on religious freedom- and who is it that votes them in? It’s not republicans, and it’s probably not libertarians.

The people who make up congress represent a lot more than just themselves- they represent those who vote them in. Maybe this is why the Catholic right is fond of calling it the party of non-negotiables?

I know its a fact that there are pro-life Democrats out there. But none of them are in Congressional leadership, and its extremely tough to find any at all in high office. Gov. Bob Casey Sr. of Pennsylvania was barred from the Democrat Convention in 1992, because he was pro-life and things haven’t got any better. (his son, the Senator, is anti life)

In 2012, pro life candidate Randall Terry ran for the Democrat nomination for President, and Obama refused to debate him even once.

So, now you know a Republican who is opposed to legal immigration.

Caligula may have proposed “welfare,” but why did he do so?

And were all his policies good?

To be fair, Randall Terry isn’t really a Democrat. He’s a pro-life activist who knows how to get media attention. Not that that’s a bad thing. But he wasn’t a credible candidate.

I definitely would have paid to see such a debate, though. 😝

There are many reasons to lean right instead of left as a Catholic, and as time goes on the left has moved to such extremes that make it very difficult to be a Catholic. Here are just a few:
  1. God and religion. Each year, the left more and more abhors the idea of God and religion. They are the ones pushing policies that infringe on religious freedom and they are the ones who belittle people who believe in God. The Democratic party in this country has dumped God from their platform.
  2. Government is their god. The left pushes giving more and more power to government to solve every problem. They, through force of government, tax everyone as much as possible, and they decide what is good for everyone. It’s not compassionate to force others through the power of government to give to causes the individual doesn’t agree with. Also, leftist policies make citizens more and more dependent on government, perpetuating never-ending cycles of poverty, so what appears to be compassionate on the surface is actually the opposite. Government and taxes are necessary, but the left takes it to the extreme. This takes away free will.
  3. Abortion. This has become the left’s number one platform issue, which is totally antithetical to being a Catholic. It is their holy grail. One cannot be Catholic and support abortion—it’s just that simple. And if you oppose abortion, you are not welcome on the left and not even any longer in the Democratic party.
  4. Freedom of thought. The left has decided what you should think and say, and if you don’t, you will be silenced. That is fascism and is what Pope John Paul II fought so hard against during the Cold War.
  5. Freedom in general. The left believes government should have the power to take away many individual freedoms because government knows what’s better for you than you do.
These are just a few examples, but there are many more.

Once again, believing that the current system is flawed and in need of change is NOT equivalent to being opposed to legal immigration. I literally cannot put it any clearer.

If Trump was opposed to legal immigration, he would be an isolationist, and would call for the border to be closed entirely. That is not what is going on, your assertion is wrong.
