why do some people think Catholics don't know Jesus?

The reason christians say that catholics dont really know Jesus is because of a lot of the things the catholic church teaches goes against the bible and contradicts it.
Catholics are Christian and where is this unity within Christianity (which really just means Protestantism to you) coming from that you can say “Christians (Protestants) say…”? They say a lot of things and a lot of the time they don’t agree with each other and on several occasions they actually agree with their fellow Christians, the Catholics.
If you look up and study the background of the “eucharist” its actually came from the egyptians and their sun god that they worshiped called osiris.
Me thinks you have been reading too much Jack Chick. Or reading someone else who reads too much Jack Chick. Let me guess; whoever let you in on this little “history” never explained to you that there are Christians (Protestants) who believe that Christ is physically present in the Eucharist?
The egyptian priests would pray over these wafers to make them “holy” than they told the people that a miracle had happened and said that the wafer had turned into the flesh of the sun god, osiris.
So you are saying that the NT writers stole their idea from the Egyptians? Or that Christ stole this from the Egyptians? 😃
They, like the catholic church, called it transubstantiation.
Proof?
And the people took it and ate it, much like the catholics do in the church today.
Did the Egyptians have a book which they considered sacred and holy? Did they read from said book much like the Christians (Protestants) do today
He is not really dying on the cross everytime catholics pray over the wafer.
Know your facts before you get your dander up. They don’t make enough head and shoulders for that. If you are going to disagree with a Catholic belief fine but at least disagree with the actual belief.
So when that guy said for catholics, the relationship with Jesus is centered around the eucharist, in reality, what it really means is the catholic church is centered around the sun god, and this can be proven in many paintings, pictures, or any art really in or from the catholic church or catholics.
No. It means that Christ is physically present in our Eucharist much like other Christians (some Protestants) believe.
We are supposed to read the bible, you cant depend on a religion or a church for everything
My Bible tells me that the Church is the “pillar and bulwark of the truth” (1 Tim 3:15)
And the catholic church does many many other things that contradicts the bible. The only way to know the truth is by the word of God alone! You have to spend time reading His word
Christ is God’s Word (Jn 1:1). Have you turned the Bible into an idol  Oh this sounds very… pagan 😃
If you pray and ask God to come into your heart and to forgive you of your sins and really mean it than i guarantee you will feel different.
I do this daily.
And by reading the bible it gives such closer perspective and a better understanding on God and what He has for each of us.
I read the Bible daily.
If you ask God 'who are you?
I have no interest in “who I am” since I am a fallen and wretched human being. I am more concerned in becoming the “workmanship” (Eph. 2:10) of God.

God bless

Thanks for your (name removed by moderator)ut. I really have nothing more to add.

This thread has been helpful in clarifying some issues and has reminded me that Evangelicals and Catholics often talk at cross purposes because they have completely, stark, fundamentally different perspectives on certain issues, such as what it means to “know Jesus”. To Catholics, we Evangelicals are evangelised but not (fully) sacramentalised. To Evangelicals, many Catholics are sacramentalised, but not fully evangelised. So of course we cannot agree on what it means to “know Jesus”.

We have radically different presupositions.

I now realise that I do not “know Jesus” if, by the Roman Catholic definition, that means participarting in the RC communion.

So we do not belong to just different denominations or different churches. Really, we belong to different faiths who follow the same triune God. As such, the comments of this thread, even some of the less charitable ones, make perfect, logical sense.
I am curious to know why you think catholics are not “fully evangelized”. Can you clarify what you mean by that? Because I sort of take that to possibly mean we are not fully Christian.

And in that case, yes we have stark differences that may never come together.

Well, I’m a Christian, and honestly I don’t think Catholics really KNOW Jesus. Anyone can have a relationship with Him, whether it’s a good one, or a bad one. But the way I look at it, Catholics misinterpret parts of the Bible, and they pray to Mary and other saints. God is the only one who we should be praying to, He is the only one who should be praised. So, I don’t think that a Catholic can truely know Jesus Christ as well as a Christian can. Jesus is the only one who can forgive sin, and I really see no point in going to confession, when all I have to do is pray to God, and ask him to forgive me (and truely mean it).

That’s just my looks on it…
***“I don’t think that a Catholic can truely know Jesus Christ as well as a Christian can.” ***

This is the very kind of thing that gets you kicked off of here, but most importantly, get’s you on the judgement list.

Thou shalt not judge!

God Bless you and help you get the plank out of your own eye.

And the catholic church does many many other things that contradicts the bible. The only way to know the truth is by the word of God alone! You have to spend time reading His word and just sit and pray and talk to Him about things instead of going to a priest or someone else. If you pray and ask God to come into your heart and to forgive you of your sins and really mean it than i guarantee you will feel different. And by reading the bible it gives such closer perspective and a better understanding on God and what He has for each of us. If you ask God ‘who are you?’ What do you have for me?’ He will speak to you. Its such an incredible feeling to be in the presence of God and to walk with Him and talk with Him. But you cant depend on religion for religion is a man made thing therefore is imperfect and has flaws. God is not about religion and traditions, but about love and relationship.
And after you sit and read your Bible and pray and the Spirit reveals you the Truth how do you do you resolve it when you get up and find that the same Spirit has revealed 10s of thousands of different versions of the truth to people who , like you, have sat and read their Bible and prayed to the Spirit?

The reason christians say that catholics dont really know Jesus is because of a lot of the things the catholic church teaches goes against the bible and contradicts it. Someone on here said “For Catholics, the relationship with Jesus is centered around the Eucharist. For many Protestants, it is centered around His word, through scripture.” Okay that right there should be a big sign that pops up and question mark. If you look up and study the background of the “eucharist” its actually came from the egyptians and their sun god that they worshiped called osiris. The egyptian priests would pray over these wafers to make them “holy” than they told the people that a miracle had happened and said that the wafer had turned into the flesh of the sun god, osiris. They, like the catholic church, called it transubstantiation. And the people took it and ate it, much like the catholics do in the church today. So it really does not have to do with God at all. Communion, as it says in Gods word, is to do it in rememberance of Jesus and what he went through and did for us, your not actually taking the body of Jesus or He is not really dying on the cross everytime catholics pray over the wafer. So when that guy said for catholics, the relationship with Jesus is centered around the eucharist, in reality, what it really means is the catholic church is centered around the sun god, and this can be proven in many paintings, pictures, or any art really in or from the catholic church or catholics. You can see a bright star around jesus or mary or a sun and moon looking down on Jesus on the cross. A lot of that also comes from pagans. So catholicism is not really based on God as much as its based on a mixture of other religions, trying to bring them into and under the catholic religion, which pretty much already happend on october 27, 1986 under pope john paul II. Now the reason why most christians go by the word of God and speak of it more or be more “expressive” about God is beacuse the bible says we are to go and preach about God so that others can be saved and have the love of God.

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15

The Word of God is for us to read and study so that we may have wisdom and knowledge and that it might be used for guidence.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” Psalm 119:105

“For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;” 1 Corinthians 12:8

“Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.” 1 Corinthians 2:13

“Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.” Proverbs 4:5

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Colossians 3:16

We are supposed to read the bible, you cant depend on a religion or a church for everything on God for they are not God, just as that verse 1 Corinthians 2:13 says, God does not speak in the wisdom of man but of what the Holy Ghost teaches and says, becasue you have to compare spiritual things with spiritual things. Thats why you see Christians more joyful or outgoing about God becasue by reading the bible and worshiping and getting filled with the Holy Ghost brings great joy and love for God and a closer and better relationship with Him.

The catholic church does not speak on these things but more on doing good deeds and works and trying to live a good life, is the way to get to heaven which is wrong and goes against the bible.

“For it is by grace you have been saved and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God - not by works, so no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

“Jesus said to Him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6

‘I tell you the truth, unless one is born again, he cannot be in God’s kingdom.’ John 3:3

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him…” Revelation 3:20

“That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

Also another thing The catholic church teaches prayers to mary and that she is a mediator between earth and heaven that she helps us by calming Jesus or putting in a good word for us, which is not true at all it goes against the bible. Jesus is not an angry Lord that needs to be clamed down by his mother, nor does mary need to be prayed to for she was just a human that the Lord used for an amazing thing, for it was not through her that the amazing birth of Jesus happend, but through God. Does a father need his mother to calm him down when his children has wronged, or does a father not forgive, care, and love with open arms when his children come to him and ask for forgiveness. Just as our Father does for us, for his love is unconditional and ever lasting. He is waiting with open arms to pick you up and forgive you. Did he not love us soo much that he sent his only son to die on the cross for our sins? Would an angry god do such a thing? No He wouldnt, therefore we do not need to pray to anyone but Him alone for He is the only one that has made such sacrifice for us, and is our only God and saviour.

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;” 1 Timothy 2:5

And the catholic church does many many other things that contradicts the bible. The only way to know the truth is by the word of God alone! You have to spend time reading His word and just sit and pray and talk to Him about things instead of going to a priest or someone else. This is about the most ignorant understanding of both paganism AND Catholicism I’ve ever heard.

It’s like saying because pagans prayed on grass and Baptists have green carpet in their Churches, they have borrowed from pagansim.

Sheesh people, when do you start educating yourselves and stop parrotting this rot you keep hearing???

God Bless and Keep you.

Are you the same Happily Catholic who told me:
This is why we are called to be charitable, not blunt.

You might just lead someone away from Christ rather than lead them to the Church. I have always had that fear within me.

You at least got one thing correct.
LOL. Aww…give him a little more credit than that…

If you would have stopped and thought (no reading required beyond the Scriptures you so conveniently posted) for one moment, you would have posited that the first worship ever done was worship of God. Therefore could it be possible that pagans and the like could have been borrowing their worship from God? Or even worshipping God?

People, paganism is NOT satan worship. As it began, these people were totally ignorant of God and therefore did not know Him and totally ignorant of satan. They pretty much just made stuff up. Example: Egyptians and Greeks. But is it possible that God revealed Himself to them in other ways? They were called Gentiles. The Jews called the Gentiles pagan because they did not know God or worship Him.

Hence this definition:

**1. **A person who is not Jewish.
**2. **Archaic A pagan or heathen.
**3. **Mormon Church A non-Mormon.

GUESS WHAT THEY STILL CALL US GENTILES (PAGAN) ALL OF US CHRISTIANS. It simply means, NOT JEWISH.

Now, if there were Gentiles and Jews in such close proximity, don’t you think their worship would have looked similar??? How in the world do you think Christ converted the Gentiles? Because He was not so foreign to them that it was completely out of the realm of reality. Why do you think it was similar? Because they were already worshipping in similar ways. Do you think this might have been because the Holy Spirit moved in them in a way they felt but did not understand until Christ revealed the Truth to them?

Yes!!! And how did He do this? Through completely strange and new means? No, he showed them the error of their ways. Example: Do not offer this sacarfice to your pagan gods, offer it to my God, the Only God and Father. Do this and you will have eternal life. Why do you think the Isrealites were already offering idols? Where do you think they got that?

The worship of satan involves altars and blood letting and all kinds of what? Wait for it…Christian worship??? NOT!!! It looks similar to Christian worship because it was taken from Christian worship.

Just because something is similar doesn’t make it the same. People have “worshipped” in similar ways throughout the existance of the earth. It ALL looks similar.

To simply pluck out catholicism in this way just shows how ignorant a person really is. Try reading sometime. Try educating yourself. And then, try a little compassion with a dose of charity and you just might get somewhere.

In this day in age we associate paganism with satan worship and the worship of idols, IGNORANTLY and incorrectly I might add.

But nonetheless, you have created a flawed argument on the flawed presumption that pagan worship came first and catholicism is taken from that. When in actuality they are simply similar. Period. That is all you can claim.

By the way, in Protestant churches, I don’t see crosses/crucifixes, altars, pictures of Christ and His Saints, or Holy Water. Are they really worshipping God or something

…unseen and secret?.. I mean pagans didn’t have pictures of their gods, so maybe they are worshipping the same god?

Now how rediculous does THAT sound? But one could make that argument couldn’t one?

Breathe, HC…breathe.

LOL 🙂

I know how you feel…your tone sounds like mine a few posts back. It’s hard to not get aggressive with all this apparent ignorance. Keep up the good fight.

As far as everything with estesbob, I think he has a point that we ALL can get overly blunt and uncharitable to a degree. I think bob’s argument was taken out of context. He was saying that the protestant communion (and that alone) was akin to “going through the motions”…I don’t think he was implying that the entire Christian walk of a protestant is “going through the motions”. Correct me if I’m wrong bob.

Anyway…blessings everyone.

You are right. I’m a little wierded out by people who simply repeat these worn out statements, especially those having to do with the parallels between paganism and catholicism. There are really none with the exception of similarity.

That one galls me to no end. But, I never said anyone wasn’t Christian or is less Christian than me. :o That also galls me.

I like bob. I know what he was trying to say. I even said he was passionate about the Eucharist and that makes “us” cathlolics respond emotionally sometimes.

To bob, I apologize.

But I know Protestants love the Lord. I’m the only catholic in my family, all alone 😊 But not in my worship of My Lord :D.

I just think we as catholics shouldn’t place ourselves above other Christians, or non-Christians for that matter. It’s God place to do that, not ours.

Bless you Steve. Never hesitate to yank my chain 🙂

I need it sometimes.

Are you the same Happily Catholic who told me:
Yes sir. 😊

But I never accused anyone of worhsipping in a way that is less than the way I worship. I attacked their statements, not the status of their relationship with Christ.

Are we friends or not? :o

I’m sorry.

I was speaking specifically of the Eucharist with my “going through the motions:” comment.

I agree with the Church, however , that Protestants have settled for a pale shadow of the truth. In our zealto get along and be charitable we must not fall into the trap of believing that all Christain denominations are bascially equal as far as gaining salavtion is concerned.

We most certainly arent enemies. But t the Truth is that their way of Worshipping much less than our way of Worshipping. We worship the Lord in the way he specifically instructed us to. I have always felt that evangelical protestant services were very high on praise and emotion and very low on actual worship.

And in that case, yes we have stark differences that may never come together.
Most of my friends are Roman Catholic (as is my wife and her family), and indeed most of my countrymen. Nearly of them have been baptised, confirmed and, for those not single, married in the Church. Yet, with some notable exceptions, even those who are regular churchgoers who presumably also participate in the Eucharistic celebration have little or no idea, in my opinion, about the basic teachings of Jesus, what His death and resurrection mean for us, who the Holy Spirit is and how we can live a Spirit-filled life, why we should pray, why we should read the Bible, why we should share our faith, whether or not God heals people today, what spiritual gifts are, and other basic elements of the faith. (In my experience, most Evangelicals, save for recent converts, have reasonable ideas about all these basic elements). Christ does not have a noticeable transforming presence in their lives. They speak, act and live no differently from Non Christians. So that is what I mean.

As to if they are “fully Christian”, I don’t know since I really don’t even know what that means. I do not want to judge them.

By the way, the phrase “sacramentalised but not evangelised” was evidently first used by Roman Catholic Cardinal Suenens. Many other Roman Catholic leaders has made and continue to make the same self-criticism–you can do a google search.

And yes I do believe, whether because of or in spite of theology, that most Evangelicals I know live their faith and experience Jesus very differently from Roman Catholics.

And yes I do believe, whether because of or in spite of theology, that most Evangelicals I know live their faith and experience Jesus very differently from Roman Catholics.
And very differrently from then way Chirst intended . They “know” Jesus in the same superfical way that people “know” their favorite movie star or sports hero.

I will share something and possibly the reason for my cringing when this comes up.

I was in RCIA and I was simply sharing something a bit like what you’ve said here. I got so chastized by a Deacon I thought I’d crawl under the table. (but actually went back!) But in the end, I realized he made me feel the way I was making Protestants feel.

All I was saying was what you basically said here and that I found the fullness of Christianity in the Church and it apparently offended the Deacon. Later through future classes I found out his parents were Protestant and he is also a convert to the faith.

I guess I learned a lesson and always have kept it close to me. I try really hard not to question people’s faith or their relationship with the Lord. It’s theirs. They own it, not I. It is not mine to question or define or even judge. Of coruse that’s always hard to do when we are questioning each others fundemental beliefs.

When I speak in terms of catholicism, I speak in terms that relate to me. I try not to see Protestantism as an opponent, but a team member who could use a few pointers on their game. :o Maybe that’s disrespectful, IDK.

Anyhoo, there are ways of saying things that don’t make people want to crawl under a table. (or punch us in the nose :p)

So, truce bob.

Now even if it is true, what about the gift of faith? If you have faith in something, don’t you think God will not grant it? I know there are big group of Protestants who step up in faith and who put lots of trust in faith that God will respond and intervene in their cries and prayers. What happen to the gift of faith? Have you never heard of it?

So you are saying if you have faith in something, God will grant it? Okay witches have faith, there are people out there that have faith in cows, statues, snakes, fire, satan, etc.
Just because you have faith in something does not mean you get the gift of faith. The gift of faith comes from having faith in Him ALONE. which the catholic church does not. Such as faith in mary, and prayers to mary, saints, etc.

“Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.”
Matthew 7:15

“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.” Galatians 1:6-7

All religions do not worship the same god, as catholics say, and they do. Look up october 27, 1986 with pope john paul II.

Anyway, all of this about Catholics not knowing Jesus only goes to show ignorance on the part of Protestants (in this group). As has been explained, Catholics are as hard working, as zealous, as loving, as expressive and as holy in evangelizing, knowing and living the word of God, Christian charity and living the word as if it is their very own. I don’t think we are much less than Protestants on this. In fact all that you have we have them. That’s why I asked another poster, JesusforMadrid, how do you get to ‘know Jesus’?

Living the word of God? Living the word of God does not involve bowing down or praying to other gods (statues). Have you even researched the past of the catholic church or vatican??? Do you hear about any sexual harassment or molested children in a christian church? No all of these priests and nuns have been doing this for centuries, and its because its to great a burden to not get married and etc. That is no where in the bible! The catholic church has blinded and totally brain-washed so many people! My heart goes out to the poor blinded catholic followers.
The popes have commited mass murders, fornications, wages of war, the list goes on and on. They were behind the holocaust and the rise of hitler. Does anyone ever ask how come the vatican is their own government?? and has their nose into everything? And the current pope even said that the holocaust never happened! WOW! and you call the pope your “holy father” if thats not the biggest blasphemous thing ive ever heard than i dont know what is!

Now catholics are loving, caring, and good people but they are mislead, and deceived by the high powers of the catholic church. Catholics are not Christians, if that were true how come they are their own religion? Why do they not call it christianity instead of catholicism?

Good thing we don’t see them as gods huh?

Have you? Tell me, since you are so versed in the history of the church, please tell me the names of those that you have gone to as the authority on this?
Do you hear about any sexual harassment or molested children in a christian church?
Yes. :sad_yes:
No all of these priests and nuns have been doing this for centuries, and its because its to great a burden to not get married and etc.
Yes I have always wondered how people who get married **never ever ** commit crimes of molestation… Never. Doesn’t ever happen…
The catholic church has blinded and totally brain-washed so many people! My heart goes out to the poor blinded catholic followers.
Save your pity. I will take any and all prayers but your pity is absolutely worthless.
They were behind the holocaust and the rise of hitler.
Yes God forbid the people really responsible for Hitlers atrocities (cough Hitler cough) are held accountable for their actions. 🤷
And the current pope even said that the holocaust never happened! WOW!
Proof?
Catholics are not Christians,
I have said this more than once to people on this forum; if the measure of a Christian is you, then I can think of this comment in no other way than as a compliment. Thank you.
Why do they not call it christianity instead of catholicism?
Lutherans must not be Christian. Baptists, Methodist, Episcopalians, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Pentecostals all must not be Christian. So sad for them 😊

God bless

Christ made an Apostle of a man he knew would betray Him. Christ made an Apostle of a man who would deny Him three times. Does it look like Christ was looking for a sin-less Church with which to leave His ministry? He made an Apostle of a man who scorned him, persecuted Christians and took part in the execution of a Saint.

Do you think sinless men are chosen to protect and lead His flock? Where does it say that hell will not prevail over men?
