Why do the gods fight?

I believe that a god is a member of another race of beings albeit far more advanced than humanity.

Do any of these come from UFOs? ba dum tschhhh

In this way our beliefs are similar in that we all believe in destiny, things than cannot be changed, no matter how much, or how little we understand the “why.”

We do believe that we can change out own destinies, and we can indirectly influence the destinies of others. Christians call this “free will”. Does Asatru etc. believe in free will?

The beings that I call gods are not my masters, they are my companions, my mentors, my friends.

Hey, ours, too! Though, because He is above us, and He is a far superior companion, a far superior mentor, and a far better friend, the de facto state of things is that He is our Master.

I pray to them and worship them but they worship Mankind as well.

While it would not be perfect to say so, you could say God does something similar. He died so that we could live forever. That is some kind of respect.

Thor is duty bound to defend Earth from his chariot. His hammer drove the giants away from our world. It would be a sin against Mankind and against his Father Odin to abandon his charge.

What if there were a power superior to Thor? Or Wotan?

But why do the gods fight? Why do we fight? Why is it so important to some that everyone believe the same thing that they do?

One word: Truth.

BlotMaster, I take it you also have great faith in the sciences? That these teach you how the world is and works and what made it?

Well, that is one reason why belief is so important. Do you think everyone deserves to know what reality is? Is someone deprived of something if s/he does not understand or correspond to reality?

I cannot tell you why “the gods” fight. Jealousy. Boredom. I don’t know. I cannot tell you why men fight. Probably for the same reasons. But there is one extra: Truth.

What if different gods appeared to different groups of people? Could it be that some of the gods lied when they said that they were the only ones even if they lied about nothing else?

Possibly. But why would you follow someone who claims to be something he is not, and makes this the base of all he teaches you? The entire base of your trust in him and what he teaches would be shattered. After all, what authority does a man’s teaching stand on but truth?

I am certain that my gods have made mistakes as it is written that they have. My gods are honest and have never claimed to be perfect for they too had a beginning.

May I ask another question? Where did “the gods” come from? How and wherefore is the universe?

What are your opinions on this? Assume for a moment that all gods are real. Could some lie only a little in a way that you cannot detect?

Yes, surely. I believe Satan - the deceiver - and demons do this all the time. Little lies, however, are like measurements of angles - minutes, seconds, and degrees. Given enough years, one degree’s difference from the Truth can throw you off by miles.

Take sexuality. I think atheists and Catholics agree on a lot more than they believe. But see how differently each approaches sex. Many atheists often treat it as an elated high-five at best, a recreational hobby, or even a competition. Catholics treat it as THE image of the God above all gods.

This is an interesting observation: The rise of a universal religion from the cultural religion of Judaism.

Not completely baseless considering how He describes Himself - even before He sent His Son down.

Consider the words of King David, the great prophet, in the 95th Psalm:

3 For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are his also. 5 The sea is his, for he made it; for his hands formed the dry land. 6 O come, let us worship and bow down, let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!

This statement is in error. It was not the Christian God vs the Islamic God. It was instead Human Christians vs human Muslims. The fight was for the holy land and to protect Truth .

Also, arguably Islam, Jews, and Christians believe in the same God. We just do not practice worshiping him the same, and as a Catholic I would say that Jews and Muslims err greatly in their assessment of the truth.

Both they and we certainly profess to believe in the same one God of Abraham, although we have differing views about the nature and expectations of that one God. That we do so does not indicate that there are different gods, any more than the fact that Democrats and Republicans differ in their views as to what the nature and role of government is and should be means that there is more than one US government.
