I think it has a symbolic significance. Like why are Archangels depicted with long hair in a ponytail and the ribbons are open?
It actually signifies something: long hair that they are pure and the open ribbon that they are strict yet forgiving (one version I heard in church). Here it says that it signifies their powers - divine hearing:

The pictures we have of Jesus with long hair do not derive from any physical description we have of him in the Bible, because there is none. Read more here.
