Why do we have confession? I mean surely only God can forgive my sins, so why then do we have to have confession and tell a priest our sins when I can confess them to God directly. I am slowly returning to faith so I am trying to get a better understanding of certain issues that I cant understand.

We have confession because Jesus instituted it that way. He told his Apostles “those whose sins you forgive shall be forgiven, those whose sins you retain shall be retained” he also gave them the power and authority of the Church “whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” It is Jesus’ way that we confess our sins to a priest, it isn’t the Priest who absolves our sins, it is God working through his minister. The priest can also offer us spiritual direction in how to make repartition for our sins and put things in place so that we can avoid the temptation to commit the sin again.

God bless.
(Apologies if my quotes are not word for word)

Thank you. I am learning more now than I ever did. Im sure I learned about this in school but back then I wasn’t really interested. Funny how my eyes are all of a sudden fixed on Jesus. I feel compelled to learn and grow in faith.

I highly recommend that you watch the FORGIVEN series on FORMED.org. If you and/or your parish doesn’t have a subscription to FORMED.org, you can get a free 7 day trial.

After you get though all 5 sessions (6 videos in all because session 4 has two videos), you should have a great understanding of why Jesus set up the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

God Bless

Let me give you another angle.
Research about it linking to case of demonic possession, then you understand the important of confession and why the demon hate it.

I see what you mean. So now that I’ve established I need confession. How do I go about it. I mean it has literally been 2 maybe 3 decades since my last confession. Obviously I have to start going to mass on a regular basis but what next

All you have to do is find out what time Confession is on, and go wait in line. And tell the priest it’s been decades since you last confession. Let him guide you.

I think I will. Just need to do it to get past the fact that it’s been so long. It has become a mental block

Doesn’t even matter that you forgot the form.

Go now, then go on Divine Mercy Sunday, all sorted.

Welcome home

I firmly believe that the human being is created in such a way that she needs to hear “You are forgiven in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” That way she can get up and continue walking on the road to holiness.

Contact a priest and he will guide you in what you need to do. He is also there to do what he can to bring you to heaven. The only way to learn is to ask questions.

All the sacraments are for our benefit. One can look at confession as ‘having to go to a priest’. But that is wrong approach. God can forgive us without our going to confession. In fact we should pray to a God for forgiveness as soon as we repent from a sin. But for our benefit we have the sacrament.

Confession gives us humility, since we have to be humble to disclose our sins to another. Confession draws us closer to the Body of Christ, the Church, since we have to go to her representative, the priest. The Church is our sure guide in regards to the Faith. Confession gives us a certainty with regards to our forgiveness. We are fleshly creatures. While we can and should pray to God for forgiveness hearing the words of absolution, and having been objectively forgiven, are very comforting and assuring. So don’t look at its as some imposition but look at confession as a great gift to us.

It’s about time to be honest. I pulled away from Catholicism in my late teens as I was wrestling with my faith. The problem wasn’t my faith in God, more my faith in denominations. It all got a bit confusing for a while. Made the desision to come back to what I know.

We can put it this way - it is a process in where our sins are forgiven.

It answers the question - how do we do it? How do we confess our sins to God?

The Church calls it a Sacrament - a grace which we can see (simplified answer).

God bless.

We confess our sins to fellow men (priests in particular) primarily because this is God’s ordinary way of forgiving us. Priests of the Old Covenant would hear the sins of the people, slay an animal according to the Law, and make atonement for the sinner. Jesus didn’t do away with this (except for the animal sacrifice part). Because Jesus sacrificed Himself on the cross, He was able to grant the apostles (and their successors) the power to forgive the sins of whoever’s confession they heard.

Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained. John 20:23

Another observation that I would make is that while we often say that we can confess our sins directly to God, on a practical level, most of us don’t, at least not all of our sins. Oh, we might confess a few obvious things, but we are not likely to examine our conscience and enumerate some chronic failings, especially if they don’t seem as egregious as some other things. This is precisely what the evil one wants. By having to humbly express these to a priest of Christ’s Church, not only do we receive an assurance that our sings are forgiven, but we are tasked with having to own up to many things that we would otherwise gloss over or just plain overlook. Then the priest assigns a penance, something that also allows us to glorify God and express contrition.
