Why do we light a prayer candle when praying?

What does a prayer candle imply? Does the Bible advise doing that? And if possible, Can I light a prayer candle whenever I pray? Thanks in advance.

It’s often used to represent your prayers ascending to heaven. I typically light one when I’m praying.
 
This Priest has the answer:

I like to imagine a dark medieval church with some candles and an oil lamp. And then maybe some monks/ canons chanting. I guess I must have seen that in a movie. Anyway, in one of the parishes here they remove the votive candles before Sunday Mass. Do people really want to light votive candles after Communion? It seems so. People give too much importance to votive candles I was told by a Priest. Candles arent magical or some kind of payment to God. If I light many candles God will give me much. God wants your heart not many candles.

Or the flame is purgation and the candles is the sinful part of you. The fire rises up to God and so do your prayers. This is purgation.

Sometimes when I’m praying for someone and light a candle I use the imagery of the flame as a personal reminder of Christ being the light for the world and I pray that my simple prayer is answered by them following the light of Christ to him. The continuing burning of the candle after I pray is a symbol of my prayer not just being at that moment, but Christ’s light being a never ending beacon. Too bad I can’t find never ending candles though.

Whenever I see lit candles from people in my church I send up a prayer for all the prayers they represent.
 
I love candles at any time. They create, for me, an atmosphere of calm and relaxation. I light one or more every night when I’m reading in my favorite chair. I can think of few things more attractive than praying by candle light.
 
The candle represents Christ. Christ is the light of the world.
