Why do we need the Church? Not A Church, but THE Church.

I would agree with you about the Church being the people of God. I think the original query was about THE Church, meaning Catholicism, vs. other “churches”. I approached it from a viewpoint of the insitutional church (what we see) vs. the mystical church, the church of the faithful, the people of God responding to the Word. I was not contrasting Catholics vs. Protestants, but instead the bureaucratic monolith built by people that the Catholic church is today in the eyes of many, vs. the church as it grew and developed under the wings of the first disciples.

I am not sure if I woud agree, however, that the Protestant churches are more institutional and less a church of people, if that is your drift. At least not every one of them. There are many Protestant congregations that are vibrant, faith filled communities of people seeking God through Jesus. In many ways they outdistance some (but not all) Catholic parishes I have seen in that respect.

They teach scewed scripture and manipulate vistims into believing there interpretations. When man became vein through personal interpretation is when poeple started thinking they do not need the Catholic church and Protestants began. Everything points to the Catholic church as being THE Church! all of the poorly interpreded scriptures read against the Catholic church are misconstrude in the favor of the protestant. A house devided cannot stand! Look at how many contradicting protestant churches there are out there these days deviding poeple and causing confusion! We need the church because it was Gods plan to keep us as one universal body that followed the teachings of Christ handed down to the apostles and so on only throu the Catholic church.
i see how protestants are very emotional. i think that is why the CC wisely choose to a different approach with them. it is not their fault but the fault of their also misled teachers.

if we pay attention to Jesus teachings we can see that He wasnt here to make friends by dodging the Truth, as a matter fact He would get angry when speaking the Truth and they did not believe Him. and He simply walked away. Jesus said Himself, go and preach the Truth if they dont believe shake off the sand of your sandals, truly i say to you there will a great punishment for those who reject the Truth.

who can other than the CC say to have the absolute Truth of the Teachings of our Lord? no one. therefore those who reject the Church should be very concerned.

I missed this earlier and just wanted to make a comparison. Here is what American Catholic leaders say about our pastors:
If the actions of Lutheran pastors can be described by Catholics as “sacred actions” that “can truly engender a life of grace,” if communities served by such ministers give “access to that communion in which is salvation,” and if at a eucharist at which a Lutheran pastor presides is to be found “the salvation-granting presence of the Lord,” then Lutheran churches cannot be said simply to lack the ministry given to the church by Christ and the Spirit. Absolutely agree. And division has been wounding the Church since long before 1517. And yet, the polemics of triumphalism, which historically have worked to maintain the divisions within His Church, seems to be alive and well, on both sides, and are quite evident in this thread.

You are incorrect. The Church is universal and proceeds from the Apostles, but it is not of one exclusive denomination as the capital “C” implies. The Nicene Creed proclaims the Church as one holy catholic and apostolic Church.🙂

This is the single most important set of verses as it deals with the founding of the RCC and the Primacy of Peter, on which every other teaching rest.

Thee message here is that if God has not given you a particular gift; don’t assume the right to usurp it!

This is a clear example of picking and choosing Scriptures to support your opinions and not taking the entire context of the Bible. Works do not save us in any way shape or form.

Mental gymnastics. You must twist and bend this to support your idea of exclusivity. Jesus never left Peter in charge to just do as he wished, you would know this if you knew the original Greek. Furthermore, all the Apostles were given the authority to bind and loose.

So what about Matthew 18:15-18?

“If your brother sins (against you), go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have won over your brother. If he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, so that ‘every fact may be established on the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If he refuses to listen to them, tell the church. If he refuses to listen even to the church, then treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector.”

Here church refers not to the entire church of Jesus but to the local congregation, and it’s the second of the only two instances where this word is used in the gospels. The other use of this word is found in Matthew 16:18,

“And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.”

So in some instances it refers to the entire church of Jesus, but in these two passages it refers to an actual local church.

Also, if we are to listen to the teachings of Matthew 18 and take our disagreements to the church, which local church should we go to? If a Baptist and a Methodist have a disagreement, the Baptist will say let’s go to the my Baptist church and they’ll rule in my favor, but the Methodist will say no let’s go to my Methodist church and they’ll rule in my favor… So I think this is an example of where we need THE church, and just A church or ANY church won’t suffice.

Historically speaking, the Church the Nicene Creed refers to is the Catholic Church. 🙂 any other interpretation of those words takes them out of context.

We don’t have denominations, that’s why we are called **One **. Every week my priest starts the Mass off by saying “let us pray in God’s **Universal **church.” The Catholic church is called “Universal” because it is for ALL people to join in. There is only **One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic church. **Us.

***My dear Bible expert friend. I provided an entire Chapter, [James Chapter 2] not simply a single verse in support of the Catholic teaching. Additionally I provided additional verses as evidence.

Either the Bible is TRUE, or it is not! You can’t have it both way’s. :eek:

The idea that “the entire bible” is required to support it’s teachings any and one assumes all teachings is highly suspect, and actually lessens the importance of the multiplicity of teachings and messages contained therein.

It seems easier for a non-catholic to provide what they think the Bible is saying, because you’re understanding by default becomes God’s teaching:shrug: Catholics must and can only teach in communion with Chruch teachings. That is what God Has [not had…has] in mind.
