This certainly does not appear the case elsewhere in John.
The Jews took Jesus literally and He did not correct them, although John explains to the reader.
Jesus did not explain what He meant and Nicodemus did not understand.
Again Jesus did not explain to the woman.
I would add
Matt13:10And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables? 11He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. 12For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. 13Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. 14And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: 15For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 16But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear. 17For verily I say unto you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.
34All these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:
Also, in Jn 6:53 Jesus says: Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. And in verse 63 He tells us exactly what He means 63It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. So Jesus is telling us that it is His words that we are to digest and understand and it is His words that give us life. The flesh of the son of man is explained in Jn 1:14And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. When He says in verse 63 that the flesh profiteth nothing He is talking of the spirit of the world or sin
Rom7:25I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
Rom8:8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
We must digest the WORD OF GOD because it is through the WORD OF GOD that we are saved Jn17: 17Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. And it is only through Jesus THE WORD OF GOD that we attain eternal life.Jn14:6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
