Why do you believe the Bible is the Word of God?

I’m with St. Augustine on this:

“I would not believe in the Gospel myself if the authority of the Catholic Church did not influence me to do so.”
Against the letter of Mani, 5,6, 397 A.D.

Thanks for that quote by Augustine. He knew in part too. I still think Augustine would have been a leader of the Protestant Reformation if had Augustine been living during the 16th century. Maybe God is His infiinte wisdom and through divine providence, God used Augustine to pave the way for the Protestant Reformation. Augustine was quite influencial in the Reformers in understanding truth.

Do you believe that the Bible is the Word of God because
  1. God the Holy Spirit revealed this truth to you personally.
  2. The Roman Catholic Church taught you that the Bible is the Word of God.
And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. - 1 Thessalonians 2:13
or 3:

The Holy Spirit revealed to me that the Catholic Church gave us the Bible.

…or something like that

Interesting that the scripture you use was not recognized as the word of God at the time it was written; that was up the the Church to definitively affirm at a much later time. He is also emphasizing the word of God in terms of it being spoken, not in its written form.

If you separate the Holy Spirit from the Church, you don’t have a Bible. God could have done it some other way, but that was He chose to do it.

Wait, Augustine says he would not accept it without the Catholic Church

The Bible does not reveal Paul as the middle man. He was chosen before his birth to be God’s chosen instrument to bring the gospel of God’s grace to the Gentiles (most of us). Here is the testimony of the Scriptures to support what I am sharing. Scripture removes the speculation, and gives us the grounds for our Faith. It is revelation from God to us. The whys are answered in the Scriptures and not by the magestrium. 👍
Paul not the “middle man”???
Let’s see:
Jesus revealed Himself and the Truth to Paul:
Jesus ----> Paul

Jesus revealed Himself and the Truth to the Apostles:
Jesus ----> Apostles

Jesus revealed Himself and the Truth to Lydia via Paul’s preaching:
Jesus ----> Paul ----> Lydia

Lydia’s revelation from God came not from God Himself, and not from Scripture, but from God through Paul.

Calvin used Augustine.

Augustine, on the other hand, unequivocally condemned schismatics and arrogant indivduals who claimed to know better than the Church founded by Christ.

How many years past between the life of Augustine and the Protestant Reformation, maybe 1,100 years or so? Do you think Augustine would recogonize the church that he lived in and the same one that Luther protested against?

How many years past between the life of Augustine and the Protestant Reformation?
Irrelevant.

Is it your opinion that the Catholic Church was the one true Church at the time of Augustine?

Irrelevant.

Why would you say Augustine is irrelevant, I think you brought him up in the first place?

I’m not into newspaper exegesis or history exegesis. Church history is important, but it cannot drive our understanding of Scripture because our understanding of history is not infallible like the Word of God.

It is irrelevant how many years ellapsed between Augustine and Calvin.

If you want to debate, that’s good.

Don’t intentionally distort my points.

I’ll repeat my question:

Do you believe the Catholic Church at the time of Augustine was the one true Church?

I never really thought about it. Maybe you should start a thread on church history and speculative concepts. Why do these threads always drift away from the thread topics?

Then why did you bring up the ellapsed time between Augustine and the Reformation?

Why do you not answer the tough questions posed to you?
I’m not sure which tough questions you are referring to. It may seem to be a tough question in your mind, but not necesarily to a biblical Christian’s mind.

Excellent! Then you won’t mind providing the Scriptural evidence for the canon you accept and believe!

You guys really don’t care to understand what God reveals in the Scriptures. Don’t you think the Catholic Church gave us the Bible agrument to be similar to the robot and puppet argument used in a free will debate? Also, the arguement of where the Bible teach scripture alone is ignoring the actual contents of the Bible. If you want the real debate why the Reformers left the Catholic Church, continue to join me on our bible study.
