Why do you idolize the Pope?

I was wondering who taught you Catholics idolize the Pope? but I don’t watch much American Idol show, and I love the Pope - he is my idol. 😃

About idolizing him as some God - welcome to CAF! I hope you stay around and much longer to really find the truth.

You and I worship the same God and no other god.

You are going to need to be more specific about what you mean by ‘idolize’, but if you are referring to why do we respect the authority of the Holy See…I would refer you to Matthew 16:18-19 and ask you to compare it with Is. 22:16-24. When one understands Christ as the fulfillment of the Davidic Kingdom, a lot of other Catholic dogma makes sense. Let me know if more clarification is neccessary.

“Idolize” as in worship? Or “idolize” in the popular sense of the word (respect, honor, imitate)?

We worship only God, if that is your question.

For much the same reason people “idolize” any other person in their life. He is an example of holiness and faithfulness that I wish to aspire to.

Why do kids idolize football players or movie stars? It’s because they wish to be like that person. Well - I would like to be like the Pope. I admire his steadfast adherence to and support of the Truth.

Yep - I idolize him, and I don’t see a single thing wrong with it.

Now - if you for one second think or will try to imply that I place him at a higher level than Christ, then you will have a pretty good fight on your hands here. No Catholic does that. And if they do they need to be set straight about it.

Idolize… well, in a sense, we look up to him. He is our earthly spiritual leader, after all!

He is infallible, only in matters of faith and morals, not to be confused with impeccable, which means he cannot make a mistake.

The Pope is the bishop of Rome.

For a reason why we respect and listen to him, look to Scripture (Phil. 1; 1 Tim. 3; Tit. 1… evidence for bishops/church hierarchy in scripture), or to the early church fathers, like St. Ignatius of Antioch, who died in the year 107 and was a disciple of the Apostle John: “See that you all follow the bishop, even as Christ Jesus does the Father, and the priests as you would the Apostles. Reverence the deacons as those who carry out the appointment of God. Let no man do anything connected with the Church without the bishop…It is not lawful without the bishop either to baptize or to celebrate a love-feast; but whatsoever he shall approve of, that is also pleasing to God, so that everything done may be secure and valid.”

I idolize the pope or rather ADMIRE him because there is a line of popes that was never broken from Peter to Benedict. I ADMIRE the fact that the Catholic church has stood steadfast in it’s faith and has been around for 2,000 years. I ADMIRE the pope because he is the Vicar of Christ.

May be “idolize” wasn’t the right word for you to use. Anyway…

We believe the Pope to be successor of St Peter. And as the witnesses of St Peter wanted his shadow to fall on them, we too are in awe of the Pope.

Acts 5:15 - As a result of what the apostles were doing, sick people were carried out into the streets and placed on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by.
