Why do you idolize the Pope?

You are going to need to be more specific about what you mean by ‘idolize’, but if you are referring to why do we respect the authority of the Holy See…I would refer you to Matthew 16:18-19 and ask you to compare it with Is. 22:16-24. When one understands Christ as the fulfillment of the Davidic Kingdom, a lot of other Catholic dogma makes sense. Let me know if more clarification is neccessary.

👍 very good.

👍 very good.
Thanks…I find it very interesting when our Christian Brethren want to speak of Sola Scriptura and yet at the same time seem to care little about Biblical exegesis. Just my own opinion on that matter, but I suppose I should wait to see what pcrusader has to say about it. God bless…

I notice that the OP was just a drive-by. The OP joined today, made one post and then disappeared. I doubt he even bothered to read the answers. Too bad, there were some good ones. 🙂

I hope your friend returns for discussion rather than statements that are obviously in grevious error.
The reason for so many flippant remarks is obviously due to both the way the original question was asked and the fact that these kinds of questions have been answered so many times.

Please offer our apologies to your friend. Explain that, if he/she wishes to do some searches here, and/or engage in actual discussion they will learn all they wish to know about the Faith.

Peace

No. This is not a “drive-by”. I just happen to have a life…so I will not be responding to any at the very moment they are posted!
You should not be bashing a fellow Christian! If I offended you in any way by my words, I apologize. I am on your side…I am just driving for a good answer that can explain what I will clarify:
First off, the Catholics seem to put the Pope on a pedestal. I do not see that as abiding by the Bible.
It says in the Ten Commandments to have no idols.
I do not see the bowing down to the Pope as being something God would approve of.
Second of all, where does it say in the Bible that God has placed the Pope in position. I understand that in you have additional books and I am not fully aware of your religion, but no where in my Bible did God put a man over other men in the current age. God does not speak of the current age.
Where do you come up with this system that the Catholic church has established?
And, lastly, why do many Catholics that I come across believe that their religion is the only right and that other religions have an end? We should be working together to spread the Word and to build the faith…not destroy it and pick it apart!!
United we stand, divided we fall!!!

Many people here have given answers that seem flippant, but most actually contain good information. The mere fact that they are flippant indicates that we do not think of the Pope in the sense you seem to think we do.
If we did we wouldn’t post things like, “because he wears great hats” or other such comments.

How about bowing before kings or other forms of protocol given to heads of state?

THIS THREAD Might make some good reading for you.

Because the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church is the one that Christ Himself instituted upon the leadership of the Apostles and we are able to trace that apostolic succession in both persons and teaching from that day to this one.
The very Bible you hold in your hand, you have as a result of the efforts of the Catholic Church.

We “idolize” the pope because he is the successor to St. Peter…the first pope. Jesus Himself said that “Upon this rock (Petros…Peter) I will build My Church.” Every Pope we have had since has been directly decsenced from St. Peter (The rock). We do not worship him, which is what the commandment was talking about. Worship is for God and God alone.

About the whole “Catholics believing only their faith is correct thing” Well, we believe that other Christian faiths have a partial Truth, and that ONLY the Catholic Church has the Entire Truth. Basically why have a sloppy Mc Donalds hamburger when you can have a nice juicy filet mignon?

I’m sure others will be along to answer all your questions better than me.

God bless!

Oh and P.S. We do not have “additional books” in the Bible! We have the ORIGINAL books, and Protestants have taken them out! Sorry, but I can’t stand it when Protestants think that Catholics have “added books to the Bible.” Untrue. Protestants removed them!

God bless again.

Why do you idolize the Bible?

Why do you do everything Dr. Dobson tells you to do?

Why do you believe everything the Bible Answer Man says?

(Rhetorical questions, not meant to be answered, just thought about…)

I do not see the bowing down to the Pope as being something God would approve of…
It depends on the purpose of the bow. Actors on stage bow to the audience when receiving applause, but nobody thinks the actors are bowing in worship of the audience. Some oriental cultures have a custom where people bow when they meet on the street, but nobody thinks they are bowing to each other in worship. It is the intent behind the bow which makes all the difference.

Catholics do not worship the pope. We do respect him (or more accurately, his position), which is why one might bow when seeing the pope (it depends on the circumstances – I saw JPII in St Peter’s Square in 1985 but nobody was bowing, it was S.R.O.).

One shouldn’t bow in worship to anything other than God. One may bow in respect to worthy people in culturally appropriate situations.

Because we’re all made with a “pope shaped void” in our lives, and we will find something to fill it, even if it’s not the pope. 😛

Where do you come up with this system that the Catholic church has established?..
Jesus chose Peter as the foundation of His Church. “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven,” Matt. 16:18-19. Peter’s position (that of primary bishop over the entire Church) is the position which we now call “Pope.”

The New Testament describes three levels of clergy: deacons, priests, and bishops. The Catholic Church’s essential structure is the same now as it was then, comprised of these same three levels of clergy. The pope is a bishop, but he is a bishop with additional authority, the same authority which Jesus gave to Peter 2,000 years ago.
