Why do you or don’t you recieve Christ’s blood at Holy Communion? 🙂

I do receive the Most Precious Blood, because that’s the way Christ instituted the Sacrament at the Last Supper. Don’t anyone flame me, I know the fullness of the Scarament is contained in either Species.

Well, right now I’m in Venezuela so Communion isn’t offered under both species regularly.

Back in Texas, I usually receive only the one species as well.

I have two reasons:

First, I realized that I was thinking of the Cup as the Precious Blood and not as the Body and Blood (Soul and Divinity) all present in each species. This occured to me when I was teaching my second grade CCE class. So I started to receive under one species only to remind myself.

Once, I started doing that I found that I really focused on Christ within me. Stopping at the Cup station after I had already received seemed a little redundant and distracting. I just wanted to go straight back to my seat and do my Thanksgiving. That’s my second reason.

Not really rational I know, but you asked. :o

I don’t like to have the smell of alcohol on my breathe when driving in case I am pulled over for a routine traffic stop. While a breathe test would mostlikely clear me of DUI, I’ve also heard stories on TV where a false positive could occur due to certain foods.

I also am somewhat distracted by receiving the cup. It prolongs the journey back to my seat where I can begin to contemplate as well as possible.

Also, the use of EMHCs could be greatly reduced if we did not receive from the cup, thus better illuminating the unique nature of the ordained clergy.

Finally, growing up in a generation that received either no catechesis or else a rather destructive version thereof, I find it important to give witness to the completeness of reception under one kind.

Normally my family sits in a pew at the end. So if one of us recieves from the cup we don’t really disturb anyone who is kneeling in prayer. Recently my children and I were late than usual to Mass and sat in the middle of a different pew. I thought it would be rude and disturbing to the others in the pew if I returned after they were kneeling so I didn’t recieve from the cup. I do see a lot of those who recieve from the cup going right out the door. Probably for the same reason…

I don’t because I don’t really need to and I am reasonably sure that if I receive from the cup, then other parishioners will refuse to do so.

If it helps you to understand that statement, I cough often. I am known for coughing. No, I am NOT sick (contagious), but nobody seems to get that. Some people clearly refuse to shake my hand (I assume because I am “sick”). So for that reason and a few others, I just stay away.

I miss it. I used to go for both.

Other: See Catechism of Trent regarding taking under both species. Yesterday’s hereasy is encouraged today.

I receive the Precious Blood because it is offered in my parish and I wouldn’t walk past it. And, as another poster said:

Annunciata, I agree, it is hard to walk past!! I thought I was the only one who felt this way.

I generally receive under both species because I believe it best symbolizes the separation of Christ’s body and blood on the cross. However, this year I’m going to refrain from the cup during cold and flu season, not only for myself but to keep from getting something that I could pass on to my kids. I’ve told my daughter that she can do the same. Once flu season has passed I’ll receive under both species again.

In Christ,
Nancy 🙂

cold and flu season, when I am drippy and sneezy I don’t shake hands and don’t drink from the cup so I don’t turn off the person next to me.

Lots of people feel this way…unless of course if they are ill… then they probably should be home in bed instead of spreading germs. ( I mean really ill…not just because you might have a cough as I believe you posted above)…
Do a search on it … there was a lot of discussion about this in another thread …not sure what the name of it was:confused: . Annunciata:)

Dear friends

Dear Pug…do you have asthma, maybe sounds a little like it if you have a persistant cough…I hope you have consulted a doctor about this health problem you suffer and have to bear. I also hope you raise this suffering in the chalice with Christ’s sufferings…anyway, sorry to be mumsy on you! just my concern. If you are not ill and cough for a reason such as asthma, nervous cough, smoking etc etc etc, you should not deny yourself the Precious Blood of Christ, if in your heart you desire to receive Him under both species, you are not being selfish to do this. If anyone raises a concern you can tell them you are not ill, you just cough, it’s the way you are. I’ll say a prayer for you that you get rid of this cough you endurexxx

Dear friends

I receive under both species unless I am ill. I do this because, my Lord is truly present in both and as both are present, I cannot decline. This of course is personal and no-one HAS to receive both, so long as they receive the host only if they are without mortal sin on their soul (in a state of grace, nothing seperating them from God, this doesn’t include venial sin, as venial sins are wiped from your soul by the receipt of the Eucharist (and His Precious Blood if so desired by the communicant, but the Eucharist alone fulfills this as others have rightly stated Jesus is fully present under both species)).

The Priest has consecrated both elements and both are Jesus, therefore I receive both.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

p.s. I find this highly irreverent …I receive the blood because is really helps wash down Christ’s body…most inappropriate option.

Dear friends

Also I receive Jesus’ Precious Blood because, when Jesus told those who were with Him to drink His blood and eat His flesh, many fell away from Him and no longer went about with Him. The Jews knew blood as ‘life’ and it was forbidden to drink blood or consume it, all meat is drained of blood before it is consumed, they couldn’t bear what Jesus had said to them, probably they couldn’t bear to eat His flesh either, but the blood was harder for them to accept. Jesus was obviously saddened by this, as He turned to His apostles and said will you also leave me, Peter said you hold the words of life, where shall we go?..these words whether Peter intended it, show that Jesus in His words was giving us the ‘life’ of His blood as well as His body, pertaining more to blood as 'life ’ is blood to the Jewish nations. Peter’s words are also words of trust in the Lord, that if Jesus instructs it, we should do it.

Therefore I receive His Most Precious Blood because it is LIFE, I also want to show the Lord in my heart and in my action of obedience to His instructions, that I like Peter, trust His Word and also that I will not ‘stop going about with Him’.

I know Jesus is truly and fully present under the species of the Host, but I feel the receipt of His Precious Blood truly emphasises my discipleship and trust in Him and love for Him and His Word.

I pray also with an humble heart that the receipt of Jesus will bring me ever closer to Him and make me each time I do receive, Christ-like.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa

Dear Pug…do you have asthma
Thank you for the prayers Teresa! I have acid from my stomach that migrates to my lungs. Then I cough because it irritates them. Don’t worry, I’ve been to see the doctor about it 🙂

My answer is really quite silly and isn’t really all the ligit. I’m scared. I don’t know how His Blod will tase and other things like that. I am not yet of drinking age, but I have tasted a few sips of different wines and the all seem really dry and cause me to make srange faces! Also, not that I don’t turst the purifing cloth, germs.

Adam:D

Ever since college I’ve had a devotion to the Precious Blood, so I receive it whenever it is offered and I’m not sick.

Adam, I know what you mean about wine. It can be acidic, un-smooth, and basically nasty. The wine used for the consecration is very mild compared to lots of stuff out there. Much less chance of “making a face”.🙂

I choose not to receive from the cup because I am terrified of dropping it. I am a huge klutz (I managed to break both of my arms within five days of eachother and required extensive surgery on one of them.). I know that one of these days I’ll have a bad hand off with the EMHC and the Precious Blood will fall to the ground.

I don’t want to buck the odds so I elect to receive only the Host, and only on the tongue.
