Why does it exist in the first place? I know there are various ideas as to how it originates from a particular family structure to the idea of a gay gene (which is inconclusive). Even from a purely, biological evolutionary perspective homosexuality doesn’t make sense because humans are supposed to propagate the species and if everyone would be gay there would be no more human race. And if you look at Natural Law which says things should be used according to their purpose; (i.e., Gay sex is inserting a reproductive organ into a digestive tract, which hardly seems to follow any natural or biological law.)

As a result, a large number of diseases are associated with anal intercourse, many of which are rare or even unknown in the heterosexual population such as: anal cancer, Chlamydia trachomatis, Cryptosporidium, Giardia lamblia, Herpes simplex virus, HIV, Human papilloma virus, Isospora belli, Microsporidia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C and others. Which tells you in itself this is an unnatural act, and not for what the body is supposed to be used for.

Not trying to be rude to anyone on here but I’m just curious.
 
Everyone has a cross to bear. Some are heavier than others.

Two points. First the “if everybody was…” argument is not a good one: “if everybody was male …” has precisely the same impact. As to the genetic thing, an Italian study showed that although male gays had fewer children, their female relatives on average had more children so overall the number of children in the family was increased. In effect there seemed to be a genetic “Ohhh, he’s hunky” reaction in anyone who has this gene. See Why Gays Don’t Go Extinct.

This list is from a very unreliable scource. HPV and HIV are both more common in heterosexuals than in homosexuals. HPV vaccination in Britain is being offered to girls, not to gay men. Worldwide HIV is primarily a heterosexual disease. Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C are found in heterosexuals as well as in homosexuals.

Beware of statistics. Statistically there are more cases of breast cancer in heterosexuals than in homosexual males. Statistically there are more cases of prostate cancer in heterosexuals than in lesbians. See what I mean?

As with all other forms of disordered behavior, it is a result of our fallen nature. The evil one, who always seeks to pervert God’s will, entices us to all sorts of wrongful thoughts and behaviors, and sexual disorder (promiscuity of any type) is within this range of disordered activities. It is, indeed, a cross that some of us must bear in this life.

Beware of nearly all studies and statistics - as they inevitably seek to find a physical explanation for what are spiritual problems. Think of this: If a man is supposed to match up with another man, why isn’t he then a woman? Those with same sex attraction have reproductive systems which function heterosexually. So, the problem is not purely biology.
 
People giving into temptation.
People feeding this temptation with pornography, etc.
People not saying “In the name of Jesus, Devil begone”, every time they are tempted and then praying.
Society saying sodomy is OK (and therefore approving).

So far genetics regarding homosexuality is “junk science”.

To sum up, SSA is usually caused by a complex interactions of many factors. One of my psychology professors at my Catholic college indicated that from his experience in his practice the cause of SSA is “everything” (meaning a variety of factors). He said this after saying that he’s know psychologists who lost their jobs on panels due to their position on causal factors of SSA.

There are biologically influenced temperaments that have a lot to do with it, but there has been no “gay gene” identified. An article in the Journal of Homosexuality states, “Biomed-ical research has failed to provide evidence for a possible causation of homosexuality.” (abstract of article found at ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8895026 ) I do not endorse this article as a whole.

Some psychologists have noted many environmental factors that cause SSA. Many of them, for men, have to do with relations between a father or father figures, and negative relations with same-sex peers. However, because a variety of things can cause SSA, none of these are universal. There are always exceptions.

I do not endorse the view by some other Catholics that homosexuality is merely a result of disordered behavior by which we choose to do something immoral and develop the bad habit of SSA. Many people with SSA knew they were “different” from a very young age, well before puberty. The Christian speaker in this excellent video says that he knew he was different from other boys at a very young age, but at that time, it had very little to do with sex:

I offer nothing of the sort. Rather, I spoke of the ultimate behavior, as much as the underlying cause. There is a desire which leads to the behavior and the source of this desire is the point which must be addressed. However, in most post-pubescent humans, it is the behavior which is usually noted and which obtains the greatest amount of attention. There are as many causes of the desire as their are souls. Again, there are persons who experienced essentially identical or even more profound “causal” factors and yet did not develop SSA.

Dr. Joseph Nicolosi is one of the brave who is attempting to constructively address this issue. So many of the rest offer only physical or legislative “solutions” to spiritual problems.

You have a very limited understanding of homosexual activities. There are a lot more varieties that what you suggest, and that do not involve “inserting a reproductive organ into a digestive tract”, an act, BTW, which is not limited to homosexuals but is also practiced by heterosexual couples.

I think it’s a sick joke played on the victims of same-sex attraction. Set up their lives so they end up SSA, refuse to answer prayers for healing and only give them one legitimate option on how to live.

Hmm…it comes down to two choices. Living hell of isolation, loneliness and depression here on earth where one is rejected, hated and despised by the people of God, not in word but in practice, with the very slim chance that the person may possibly be saved at the end, but the outlook is doubtful; chances are hell awaits after a life of hell. Live freely on the earth giving in to the same-sex attractions, become “gay” and end up in hell. Bad business, either way.

It seems to me that people with SSA are playing the game of life with a very bad poker hand and are expected to win.

SSA: 2 of hearts, 4 of diamonds, 7 of spades, 10 of clubs, and an ace of spades.
Everyone else: at least a pair or better.

Dear Habesha,

The genesis of homosexuality in terms of orientation, desire and temptation is one of the effects of the Fall and Original Sin, regardless of any other mutifactorial causes.

Sacred Scripture is quite emphatic that sin affects every part of human nature and every area of human experience. the effects of sin are physical, pschological and emotional as well as moral and spiritual. Thus just as the natural creation has been spoilt by the Fall and the curse (see Gen. 3: 17-19), so also have people’s bodies been affected.

It is no longer fashionable in Catholic circles to speak of homosexuality as being a consequence of the Fall, but orthodox Catholics should reckon with the Fall when discussing the primary reason why homosexuality exists. Unfortunately the world is not now as it originally came from the good hands of the Creator. Mankind has rebelled and fallen into a state of sin and misery. We are born into an already imperfect world and we bring an already deeply wounded nature with us. Moreover, our personalities are complexes of all kinds of sinful desires. No aspect of our humanity escapes unscathed and our sexuality is not immune. We may inherit divers tendencies to rebel against God’s moral law and it is only too possible for us to respond in a sinful way to the various evil influences that we experience.

However, it should always be remembered that homosexual aberrant acts are only one sin among so many, nevertheless if a man remains impenitent and they are persisted in to his life’s end then they are among the sins that will debar from the kingdom of God (see I Cor. 6: 9,10). As Catholics we need to beware of adopting trivial views of sin and of diluting the significance of the fact that homosexual deviant acts are sinful. All sin is a horrendous affront to the goodness and purity of God and merits His judgement accordingly, sometimes in this mortal life, most certainly in the next.

Since sin is part of the reason people end up with same-sex attractions. The sins of people who sexual abuse children. The sins of fathers who don’t love their son unconditionally and/or don’t express their love to their son. The sins of mothers who overprotect their sons and/or refuse to let them grown into their own masculinity. The sins of peers who treat the boy as a pariah. Yes, absolutely, I can see some of the causes of same-sex attractions are based in sin and the fall. After all, the fall was the result of one sin. Original sin makes us all susceptible to sin because of concupiscence. The boy has no say in his father, mother or peers. He lives in a situation where his self-image and self-concept as a man are going to be wounded. Out of that woundedness is often born same-sex attractions. It’s the result of how one is treated as well as one’s temperament. All the result of sin and, more often than not, sins committed by others. The sin for the same-sex attracted person is in voluntary thought or deed. That’s why St. Paul tells us to take each thought and bring it under captivity to Christ. We are to remain chaste in thought, word and deed.

In that, it seems like a sick and cruel joke played at the expense of the boy. His life was set-up from the start and he had no chance and feels like there’s no hope for a way out. Live a life that is more akin to a living hell where one is lonely, depressed and rejected by many in the Church with a slim chance of maybe making heaven but most likely ending up in hell or live a life of sin and end up in hell anyway. I know that seems unfair, but when you’re stuck in the middle of it all the time, wanting to change and despising something that is so personal and painful, that’s how it seems. I’ve often thought to illustrate the cross of same-sex attraction thusly: A cross of solid oak measuring 15 ft. high by 7 ft. wide, weighing 1 ton with a huge thumb atop it, pressing down and people, including a Bishop, jumping up and down upon the cross making the person carrying it on their back shudder in effort. The person begs for help and no one helps him. Instead, they derisively yell, “NO!” and begin to jump and press down even harder, nearly crushing the person. That’s what same-sex attractions feels like. Every minute. Every day.

Cordial greetings to you again and thankyou for your response above.

Without wishing in any way to sound patronizing, I really do feel for you and your present plight but please do not allow yourself to become embittered against the Church or the Faith.

Someone once said that we all have our crosses to carry but Jesus carries the heaviest end. So please do not despair old chap for he does grant us sufficient grace to bear with our afflictions, I know that from my own personal experience. Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you.

Never rule out the possibility of radical change in response to earnest prayer. However, even if that prayer goes seemingly unanswered, He will give you grace to live a chaste life that will in itself be a beacon of hope to others who are also despairing.

Paul in his letter to the Romans makes it sound like homosexuality is a punishment from God for those who have committed idolatry. Worship idols and God will turn you into a homosexual. I once heard a Baptist preacher claim that homosexuality is a sign that God has given up on a person, written them off forever.

The first sounds reasonable. Idolatry is fundamentally worship of the natural powers. Putting creatures before God as an OT prophet would think it. The kind of moral construct that belief system builds is utilitarian. Love is based on usefullness. The gift over the giver. Although a culture of this sort may start out noble it’s success becomes the cause of it’s fall. The bond between persons degenerates as the human person is increasingly seen as an object of use. Hmm…sounds very familiar. Maybe I’m just projecting my modern view into the past…Nah:hmmm:

Reproduction is not the only purpose of sex in our species (or other species).

If sexual behavior in our species evolved for the sole, or primary purpose of reproduction our females would have obvious signs of ovulation and that would be the only time the males would be interested in sex (as is the case in other species).

The biological evidence in our species is in favor of sex having functions besides reproduction, maybe not unlike the Bonobo chimps.

Our processes become corrupted fairly often.
