You are right. Joel Osteen does seem to be a motivational speaker, Take your Bible and say I command this in my life and I command that in my life. Joel, give me the gospel, not what I want to hear about the importance of myself. Please, it’s what people really need to hear. I might as well listen to Benny Hinn, I give you 100 and you’ll guarantee 1000 back?

I believe he is really a motivational speaker along with many other TV preachers There are even church pastors that are motivational speakers (I’m talking about non-denom ones that preach similar to the evangelists on TV) They are mostly talking about how you can be successful if you just “have enough faith” and give into their "ministry. They talk very little about sin or final judgment, definitely nothing about the sacraments (which they don’t believe in anyhow). You might just as well get some tapes or cds of Earle Nightingale, Zig Ziglar, etc.

Who really cares? He doesn’t have any mandate from the Apostles to preach the Gospel of Christ, so nobody should consider him a Christian preacher anyway.

I do not listen to him at all. I heard him once and heard nothing about sin, salvation or the Gospel of Christ. So I stopped listening to him. Several friends I know like him but I just don not see it.

99% sure he is a lay preacher, not an ordained one. To me, that makes him a motivational speaker

Why do Catholics, even Protestants, expect Joel Osteen et al to perform something similar to the Catholic Mass?

Because the Body Needs all parts. Churches like his may be thin on theology but are “gateways” to those who do not know Christ or have fallen away. While not my cup of tea, I know one person who says “he may be more of a cheer leader than a preacher, but sometimes I need to be cheered”.
I give thanks that churches like his re-connect people with God and many will continue to grow beyond the entry level theology he is called to preach.

I find that a lot of the “super churches” are motivational events. I live here in West Palm Beach area and there is a church here Christ Fellowship. The pastor Tom Mullins is actually a good man.
I went to college with his daughter years ago, and they are all decent people. I have been to a few services of theirs and it is good. I sometimes go there after our Sunday 9:30 service and go there for their 11 oclock service.
I do not do that a lot mind you. I have a friend that goes there, and I will meet him once and a while after mass.
I find that they are good and fruitful, however I just feel there is a lack of “reverence” inside the church. There is a Starbucks in the lobby and people will go inside with coffee. The opening (for about 30 minutes) is music. A whole band is up there with drums…the whole bit. They are all songs of worship and it is decent. However, of course, inside there is barely anything (visually) that you are in a place of worship. It resembles an opera house or indoor theatre than a “church.”
We go over the topic of the day, or they will be doing a series. That will last about a month or so. Like when they did a series on “The KIngdom.” Anyway, it is not bad, it is just lacks reverence. To me it is little off putting, seeing people with their own drinks, like coffee they just bought in the lobby inside. Not horrible, just does not seem appropriate.
Once a month there is a communion where there are trays passed around like gift baskets. I think the “wine” is grape juice.

I hope this is not too off topic but what would everyone here have to say about Joel Osteen’s theology and preaching? Would you say that his theology and preaching are mostly orthodox, mostly unorthodox, or what? I am honestly not sure as I almost never watch his show. I don’t think I have ever sat down and watched an entire service of his. Its just not interesting enough for me to sit down and watch an entire service of his.

your question is kinda loaded and I think you know the answer already. Yes, in a sense he is a motivational speaker, he has a very positive promotion of his version of the Christian faith.
He isn’t Catholic and can’t be expected as one poster pointed out to be Catholic and perform a Mass. His appeal is understandable. Coming out of a faith/name it claim it/wealth and health movement, his theology is what should be the concern. Sometimes, we as Catholic do need a more uplifting positive promotion of our faith. That is why Joel Osteen has a broad appeal, even though there is not much depth at all if one looks carefully at him and Joyce Meyers.

Besides the fact that he’s a manifest heretic, men are called to preach the Gospel by mandate of the Apostles, not by some self-interpreted interior feeling of a call from God.
