I was wondering about this question the other day. I know that God is perfect, and thus what he creates is perfect, yet I was wondering why many people are born with abnormalities? Why do some people get born deformed?

I am pretty sure that it is not the cause of God, but that he just lets it happen.

This should be the same thing for diseases I suppose, he doesn’t cause them, but might let it happen as well.

I tend to be more confused when it comes to people being born like this though and don’t really know as to why.

You start out with presumtions leading to conclusions.

The world is imperfect because of sin. When Adam and Eve sinned, entire creation was brought down. Whatever imperfections happen today is because of that sin. God in fact did everything He can to rectify it without obliterating the human race. He sent his only Son to share His divinity with us and perfect us.

My daughter was born with Down Syndrome.
I was 18 when she was born. She is 28 yrs old
Today. And she has always been a blessing to
Our entire family.

Someone posed the same question to Jesus. He said it was that the Glory of God shoud shine forth. Everyone created by God has a purpose in life. We all seek to find his will in our lives. Our brothers and sisters who are born this way are great channels of Gods grace and mercy. How God uses it in the great plan of salvation I do not know, but I can garantee that none of it goes to waste.

You have been twice blessed then, and I’m sure she has taught you a lot
about unconditional love, too!

Down Syndrome usually occurs when the mom is pretty young or over 40
Does she still live with you, or is she in a halfway house?.
Did you have other kids then later? I bet you all love her very much!
A baby borne with downs is usually born so as the result of a chromosomal
abnormality. It was not the fault of either parent.
Thank you for sharing this with us!

May God bless you all, with all the love you can stand!!

Go doesn’t decide for babies to be born with abnormalities, it is us.

An example would be the major increase of serious abnormalities in Iraq now due to the American troops using depleted uranium in their bullets.

Think how many nuclear weapons have been tested since the 1940’s releasing stuff into the air and all the chimneys and chemicals everywhere.

Women smoking and drinking whilst pregnant.

I knew a woman who was injecting heroin whilst pregnant, I have never heard a baby scream like that when it was born, poor boy.

I have wondered the same thing sometimes, 9/11 as a drastic example, I really appreciate the responses you have received so far.

There’s not satisfactory answer to the OP’s question.

So let’s proceed to the unsatisfactory answer. 😦

There’s no doubt some people have more sufferings than others,
but if God made everybody have an equal amount,
he’d have to keep performing miracles in everybody’s life every day,
and man’s free will would be denied.

I told you it would be unsatisfactory, but it is what is is.

I recently had a neighbor who has a 2 yr old boy who has cancer. He believes in God and he, his wife, his older son, and his 2 yr old son are all happy and all examples to me on how to live as a happy, healthy family full of faith.

I wish I was half as happy as he or any of his family. I don’t know how he does it (actually I do).

I don’t know God’s mind. I grew up in an alcoholic family where physical and emotional abuse were dished out by the minute or by the hour. Sexual abuse got thrown in there as well. Emotional neglect. Even emotional incest as I got older. All I know is that I was able to (mostly) work through that pain and suffering, despite living a nightmare on a daily basis. Ostricised by society as a child because I didn’t know how to act or behave, extremely withdrawn to the point of almost becoming mute. Did I ‘deserve’ it. I don’t think so, expecially since it goes back to my earliest memories at the age of 2.

I don’t blame God. I used to blame my parents. Then I hated them. Then I hated the world. I was the embodiment of hate and used alcohol and marijuana in efforts to escape the pain. I did so because even though I felt like I needed help I could not trust people, I was afraid of people. All of them. I felt like the entire human race was against me and literally out ot get me, to harm me, or waiting to do me harm. I was in the constant fight or flight syndrome, like a little fawn beng circled by a pack of lions. This is how I felt every moment of every day, how I thought, especially if I had a place to go where people would be, or was in a place where people were. An objective person would view the situations as just life, social situations with no reason to be afraid. This was my life, moment to moment, day by day, year by year, for a very long time. To some extent it still is (much much less though).

Now I work with individuals who have extreme emotional and psychological, as well as the external sufferings that go hand and hand with these things. Poverty, homelessness, etc. I have the uniuqe ability to connect with and gain the trust of people and to help people who grow up and live in the worst of circumstances. I am able to use my past experiences to do God’s work. I am greatful for that. It gives me purpose and even makes me feel special sometimes. It makes me feel good a lot of the time. And I get a lot of complements from those I work with about how good I am at my job, how helpful I am to them. This makes me feel good and I like it and gives me purpose in life.

I am also blessed with a wife and son. Up until my mid 30’s I was resigned to the fact that I would be single for the rest of my life, laying down with strange women as I was too afraid to connect on any type of an emotional level so I choose to have one night stands and live in sin that way. I was proud of that and bragged about it. Until I fell in love. In an instant all of that past I was proud of in and instant became unimportant and seen as a waste.

Life is complicated. I don’t have many answers. I turn to God and Jesus Christ for help and guidance now and that is working for me.

We each have our own story. Many are much more tragic than mine. I do not know why. I have asked ‘why’ and cried ‘why me’ in prayer many times. What I know for sure, deep down in my heart and soul, is that my life is significantly better since I have resolved to live my life according to the Catholic Faith and recently begun that journey. And I have reaped great internal rewards in the lessening of sufferng and burdens that I never thought would leave me, severe anxiety that afflicted me every moment of every day. I was amazed that even 1 hour of a day would be free from anxiety. Now many days, for part or even most of the day are mostly anxiety free since I have turned go God and Jesus for help.

I hope others find the relief that I have found. To feel calm, to feel peace, is such a blessing to me. I think many people take it for granted. To me it is wonderful.

I am not seeking the answers to the universe, I am not seeking to know God’s mind. I am seeking to be a good Catholic, a good father (another thing I am blessed with, I am a GREAT father which is an amazing thing given the way I was rasied. I get to experience the joy of spending time with my son and I think it is a million times more rewarding than it is for a man or woman who grew up ‘normal’, without knowing the horrors of being raised in a nightmare family. I think one smile from my son to me is probably as rewarding to me as a million smiles are to the average father who never experienced the terror I did when I was a child.

So there is an upside to everything. The love and bond that I have with my baby boy is a million times sweeter I think that the love and bond of a father who had the love and bond as a child with his own father.

Maybe my childhood was actually a blessing so that I may share a healthy, caring, loving bond with my own son and show him love and how proud I am for him doing all the regular things babies do like hold their own bottle, etc. My heart is practially jumping out of my chest with joy right now as I think about it, as I think about his smile.

It takes the meaning behind the saying “It is better to have love and lost, than to have never loved at all” to a level I can not even describe.

I am truely, truely, blessed. Thank you sooo much God!

Arturo:

When God finished making the World and the Universe, He called what He had done “good,” “very good.” The most He called it was “very good;” He did not call it “perfect.” A perfect thing would have to be another God, not a physical thing. God does not make additional gods. There is only one Perfect Being: God Himself. All else is at best Very Good.

Now, the term “good” is not used here in opposition to “evil.” The term “good” is used as we would colloquially use it - to mean, “not a bad job.” In a universe consisting of physical matter, there can be no perfection. Some things might be close to “perfection,” but they’re never absolutely perfect.

A hundred dollars in your wallet is not a million dollars. It’s just a hundred dollars. It will spend fast, almost as quickly as you receive it, and almost before you can blink, it will be gone. Matter is sort of like that. By its very nature, it is and will always be “imperfect.”

God bless,

Thank you. I hope that the story of my life may serve to help open the hearts and minds of others who have suffered in life to recognize that their suffering can be used to advance the will of God on this earth. I hope that the story of my life can give hope to those who suffer, who have suffered, that there can be blessings waiting for them in their future that in their suffering and darkness they can not immagine to be possible.

The sweetness and joy I receive from not only the experiences I enjoy with my son, but for years, the smiles and sight of children gave me great comfort and great joy. As I grew up the only people I felt ‘safe’ around were children, as they were the only human beings who I knew could not hurt me. Nothing they could do or say would ever hurt me, that is a power that only adults have, not small children.

I also have the gift of being able to connect with small children. It has been this way for many years. And I think they sense that there is something within me that draws them to me, maybe it is my genuine feeling of safety and security I have always felt around them when around adults I felt fear, often intense fear. Of course to the adult onlooker they could not sense my fear I do not think becaue I did my best to cover this up with my external presentation.

But with children I can be free, I feel free, I feel safe, I feel joy, and they sense this. When I am at a family oriented party the children gravitate to me. And that makes me feel special also. Maybe someday I will work with children. For now I have my own son, a gift from God, whom I can share all the things every child needs, every child longs for. And I, more than most, know deep down in my bones the extreme importance of this.

The cycle of my ancestors has been broken. With me and also with my 2 sisters who also have (grown children, they are younger than me as well). All their children also go to catholic schools and the eldest is about to start college at a Jesuit College.

So there is always hope, the greatest joy in your life, one so special you can’t even imagine it, might be right around the corner. And the very things that caused you pain and sufferng may have a connection to that joy you are about to experience, beyond what you ever immagined possible. My life is a living testament to that.

My message is to not give up faith, and if you have, re-open your heart to it. My blessings with my son came before I even opened my heart to having true faith as a Catholic. Now that I have Jesus and God as intregal parts of my life I am only that much stronger and that much more able to more fully experience the joys that have alluded me for decades and decades full of suffering.

Something good, something AMAZING can come from the result of extreme pain and suffering. Believe it. I still have my struggles, but the extreme joy I speak of with respect to each moment with my son and my belief that it is so much more powerful than it would have been if I lived a normal childhood, in my heart, I know it to be true.

If your reading this and have pain and suffering believe that great joy could be awaiting you in your future. Persevere. I’m sure glad I did. I don’t know what anyone else’s future holds, but small miracles are happening to people in this world every day. Don’t give up hope if your in dispair, your miracle could be right around the corner. Great good can come from tragedy. I am living proof and thank God every day for the blessings I have in my life.

I wish the same for everyone.

Biblical literalism? Argh.
Also, to say that God did everything he could implies that he is not omnipotent, because he obviously didn’t do a very good job of it. You’d think that a perfect and all-powerful being would be able to do a perfect job regardless of the circumstances.
Someone posed the same question to Jesus. He said it was that the Glory of God shoud shine forth. Everyone created by God has a purpose in life. We all seek to find his will in our lives. I find it rather hard to believe that miscarriages, stillborns, and grisly birth defects can serve a higher purpose. I suppose that one can always use the “God works in mysterious ways” excuse and get God out of trouble. But I fail to see how causing a baby to be born with its organs on the outside (leading to a quick and painful death) can serve a higher purpose. Maybe evisceration is a quick path to heaven?

But people have miscarriages and babies with defects even if they take perfect care of themselves and have no exposure to harmful substances. Pregnancy can go wrong despite our best efforts to make it go right. How can we then blame ourselves for that?
There’s not satisfactory answer to the OP’s question.

So let’s proceed to the unsatisfactory answer. 😦

There’s no doubt some people have more sufferings than others,
but if God made everybody have an equal amount,
he’d have to keep performing miracles in everybody’s life every day,
and man’s free will would be denied.

I told you it would be unsatisfactory, but it is what is is.
How would fixing a baby undermine anyone’s free will? Baby is born without legs and arms. God fixes it. Free will is left intact. Everyone is happy.

I was wondering about this question the other day. I know that God is perfect, and thus what he creates is perfect, yet I was wondering why many people are born with abnormalities? Why do some people get born deformed?

I am pretty sure that it is not the cause of God, but that he just lets it happen.

I agree that “God is perfect, and thus what he creates is perfect.” I believe that God is simply incapable of making anything imperfect. I believe that God has just one standard of good and that standard is perfection, and perfection cannot make imperfection. And although God created Adam and Eve in sinless perfection (as He did Lucifer), He did not give Adam and Eve unlimited power and knowledge; because if He had, then they would not have been human; rather, they would been equal to the Creator. God’s giving mankind the freedom to make free-will choices indicates that even though God initially made mankind perfect, as well as his environment, sin and death were brought into the formerly perfect world when mankind chose to obey the serpent instead of God. But thanks to the love of Jesus, death is not the end of life; rather, it is the beginning of eternal life with God: “For the wages of sin is death. But the grace of God, life everlasting, in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23).

The Scriptures teach that through sin death entered the world. The Church teaches this as well. The Church also teaches that all sorts of evils throughout the hisory of the world s are traceable to sin. We are talking here about all kinds of social, political, institutional, intellectual, moral, and personal evils in particular.

Beyond what the Church teaches, it can be seen that some sins, especially sexual sins, lead to actual physical evils - diseases of various sorts. Some of these are well known veneral diseases. I don’t think it can be doubted that these diseases have or could have damaged the genetic code making some people prone to various diseases such as pox, various types of palsies, or proneness to recieve other dieseases because of general genetic weakness.

Natural evils such as storms, earth quakese, forest fires, etc would be difficult to trace to sin unless these were regarded as punishments either specific or general.

On the other hand the Church teaches that God allows no evil unless some greater good can be derived, either personally or for society in general, a good designed to make salvation easier for us all - eventhough we may not see how. He wants our trust.

And no one should doubt the spiritual value of pain, illness, and other evils that come to disturb us. These can be regarded generally as crosses to test our faith and strengthen us.

Don’t mind the skeptics on this thread, they always show up. They are part of the " evils " we have to endure.
