Why reveal rules against mixed fabrics (Lev 19:19) but not reveal Maxwell’s equations or germ theory? Why is there nothing revealed that surpasses the knowledge or experience of the men who were inspired to write the book?

If the books of the Bible are inspired you would expect them to be remarkable works of literature and sources of knowledge, but there is nothing in them out of the ordinary for the time they were written in.

I respectfully disagree. There is an extraordinary amount of incredible material in the Bible. Prophecy that has come to pass (indeed, all the prophecies Jesus made have come to pass except for one, and that is regarding His return in glory), wisdom about the nature of man’s relationship with each other and God, truths of human suffering and the right way to live our lives. Scripture is unique amongst contemporary works and stands out in direct contradiction in terms of chaos vs. order and a loving God against a capricious one. There is literally tons of stuff that goes directly against your statement here, choose one thing, like the prologue of John’s gospel. It is incredible depth and nuance.

With regard to the codified law of Leviticus, you must take great care to read each book in its social and historical context. These laws are appropriate for the desert people the Israelites were at that time. Start by classifying literary genres like you would any text. Is it poem? Epic? Historic?

Hi Kostya, I feel God does reveal useful things in scripture. I’ve never known of a book to uplift me as much as the Bible does. Whatever things we face in life, however troubling, there is always a scripture that speaks straight to our hearts isn’t there?
The proverbs are packed with wisdom that speaks voume. Anyhow, it’s just my opinion. God Bless x

Kostya, all Scripture is God-breathed, and every part of Scripture contains all of Scripture.

I think your perspective is one of someone uninformed on how to read/view Scripture.

May I offer a short audio course by Fr. John Corapi on how Catholics are supposed to read Scripture?

These are MP3 audio files that you can download to your PC and play with Windows Media Player or RealPlayer, etc. Or you can put them on your iPod/iPad, MP3 player, etc. Or simply burn them to CD’s and listen to them in a CD player in your car or wherever. Good to listen to if you commute to work.

God bless! 🙂

I think I hear the Ghost of G.K. Chesterton laughing.

The supposition upon which the question is based, that knowledge of Maxwell’s equation and germ theory is superior to the knowledge of God revealed in the Bible (and through Tradition I might add) is faulty.

God is the creator. Knowledge of the creator and how to spend eternity with the creator, is superior to knowledge of that which the creator has created. I believe (just my opinon) that one reason why God made creation so complicated is so that man would always know his glory. We will always be discovering and learning new things about creation and thus learning of the glory and wisdom of its creator.

*The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky proclaims its builder’s craft. One day to the next conveys that message; one night to the next imparts that knowledge. (Psalm 19:2-3)*My point is that man, who was created by God, has the God given ability to learn about God’s creation on his own. That’s half the fun - just ask the guys at NASA or the scientists who operate the atom smasher at CERN. But knowledge of God, the mysteries of faith and knowledge of how to possess eternal life could not be discovered unless the creator revealed it to us. Would you complain to God that he revealed knowledge of himself - that which we could never discover on our own - and yet did not reveal to us that which we are able to discover on our own?

God gave us a warning about this…

yet when I applied my mind to know wisdom and knowledge, madness and folly, I learned that this also is a chase after wind. For in much wisdom there is much sorrow, and he who stores up knowledge stores up grief. (Ecclesiastes 1:17-18)
If the books of the Bible are inspired you would expect them to be remarkable works of literature and sources of knowledge, but there is nothing in them out of the ordinary for the time they were written in.
The Psalms and the Gospel of John are masterworks of literature. The first 18 verses of John contain creation, the incarnation, the trinity, good and evil, our relationship to God as children, sanctifying grace and the very thing you ask about, revelation…

No one has ever seen God. The only Son, God, who is at the Father’s side, has revealed him. (John 1:18)

That bread and wine could be turned into the flesh of the Son of God so that man might always have direct access to God himself is pretty radical knowlege in any time.

Because 2,000 years after Christ’s Resurrection, a theoretical physicist unlocked the inner workings of the atom and a few years later our government took the information and built two bombs.

Hello KostyaJMJ, 🙂

God respects our free will and human dignity. In sacred scripture I do not learn how to knit nor do you learn the equations you want to learn nor is someone taught how to write a great concerto but we are taught the most valuable things and those that surpass the interests of this passing time of exile. God is interested in our salvation not teaching us the laws he established to set things in motion etc… In the Bible we learn how to grow up from a spiritual child to a man who will live for all eternity in the presence of God.

1 Corinthian 13:
8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11 When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12 For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.

13 And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

He is simply not wasting our time.

Peace,

Abba

Kostya -

We’ve all questioned the meaning of scripture and probably sought answers that were not obvious. You are not alone. I, for example, am a Physics geek without the higher math skills to be successful in that field.

This is purely my perspective. If God gave us answers to the types of questions you ask, what value would our lives be? What challenges would we face that keep us motivated and engaged at trying to be Christ on earth, making life better for others?

Consider that perhaps scripture does deal with more weighty issues than what you give it credit. Just because you view nothing as radical or new doesn’t make it easier to understand or undertake. The bible deals with putting our souls in a place to live throughout eternity with God. Is forgiving someone really easier than coming up with a new formula? How many times have we said it, or heard it said to us and yet by action or thought known forgiveness wasn’t real at that time?

If caring for others was so willingly engaged in, and easy, we would have no homeless or hungry. Scripture reveals what we must do to make our lives meaningful to God. He doesn’t love the genius more than the mathematically challenged (at least I hope he doesn’t.) Purity of heart and soul is the Big thing if we can achieve that. The other stuff you speak of, I see, as the unique path we each take. The route being less important than the destination.

My suggestion … Use scripture to put your heart and head in order so that they guide your daily actions and insure your future discoveries serve Gods will as best you can. We are all there with you as I hope you are for me.

This error is called concordism, and it’s rooted the notion that the Bible is intended to be a science book. It’s not. The Bible is trying to tell us specific things about God, and His relationship with man - that we’re fallen, in need of redemption, and we have a glorious Redeemer in Christ, who is fully God and fully Man. Maxwell’s equations would be a pointless detail in that narrative, so God didn’t reveal it.

Where science is relevant, it’s referenced, and it’s right. The account of a universe which progresses in stages from pure light (and energy) to a material world, to lower-level living organisms on up to man is substantially the same whether you read Big Bang cosmology or Genesis. In fact, when the Big Bang theory was proposed (by a Catholic priest, no less), it was derided as smacking of religion - for just this reason.

Or take the kosher laws. They served three purposes: (1) they marked the Jewish people as called and different from the rest of the world, (2) they created some of the first taxonomies [the forbidden animals were almost exclusively those which behaved deviantly from the rest of their family, like shellfish, which don’t act like fish at all], which would later be useful for scientific purposes, and (3) health reasons. The forbidden foods, we now know, were dangerous to eat, particularly in days before refrigerators or proper food storage. Foods like pork and shellfish killed a lot of people, and here, the Jewish people survived (without even knowing why) by keeping kosher. So while the germ theory isn’t presented as such, the One inspiring the Mosaic Law seems to have known the germ theory Himself, and legislated with it in view.
If the books of the Bible are inspired you would expect them to be remarkable works of literature and sources of knowledge, but there is nothing in them out of the ordinary for the time they were written in.
This isn’t true at all. What are you comparing it with? The whole notion in Genesis of Creation ex nihilio is millennia ahead of where anybody else was in terms of understanding the origins of the universe. Even modern scientists didn’t grasp this until the mid-20th century. Perhaps your error is equating “knowledge” with “meaningless trivia about science” rather than “immortal truths about God.”

Leviticus 19:19

Among other things, not mixing fibers is mentioned.

The meaning to the Israelites is that God did not want them to mix what He taught them with the pagan beliefs in the nations around them. Every time they did that, they got in trouble and there was a setback.
God, who is all-merciful, allowed these setbacks so that they would learn to obey.

The rules and regulations in the Law set apart the Israelites from other nations.

I just wanted to let all of you know that at first I viewed this question as silly. But then I opened the answers to read them and WOW. I have learned a LOT. These answers are great! And as I am on our RCIA Team, I may have this question posed to me at some time or another. Now I have very good answers to give!

Thank you to both the OP and all the persons who gave insight! 👍

Remember: GOD did not dictate Scripture to the scores of human beings involved in writing it; rather HE breathed HIS message into their mind, using the content of their mind in creating it.

So what use would Middle-Eastern men of that historical period have had for the Maxwell equations, etc? Such items would have had no connection to what was already in their mind, and would have been rejected as incomprehensible, just as we dismiss the contents of a dream that does not make sense to us.

Such scientific knowledge would not have been usable for over 1700 years, anyhow.

They are a remarkable work of literature and source of knowledge. For instance Scripture correctly expounded the big bang theory 5,000 years before modern science postulated it.

This reminds me of Dostoevsky.🙂 Of course, it has been many moons since I enjoyed the freedom of time and tranquility to indulge reading Dostoevsky. So, I forget exactly where I read what I am about to note, I think it was in one of his many short stories.

He wrote that humans search for knowledge and understanding of the universe and existence, etc…is like they are building a glass house. If humans were to learn everything there is to learn, even though this is supposedly the goal, it would be like completing the construction of the glass house. The problem would be that when they finally finish it, oh, they will be happy for a little while, then they will start getting bored and desiring to not be in the glass house. They will start going crazy and knashing their teeth becasue they would find themselves as if trapped and condemned to live in the glass house. If only they could stick their tongue out. Something like this.

Btw, I know some of those CERN guys and gals.🙂

Peace,

Abba

not of you regard the way to find union with God and salvation from sin and death as ordinary and unimportant. How is knowing germ theory or Koeppler’s laws or Pythagorean theorem going to save your soul? What on earth is so important as that?

Do you believe this would explain why certain things are not revealed? For example God reveals that He abhors child sacrifice but doesn’t reveal that he abhors rape and pillage (at least not for a while). Is it simply that the Middle-Eastern mind was not capable of imagining waging war in any other way? Or another example would be St Paul and slavery. Does St Paul not speak out more forcefully against slavery because he is not able to even visualize a world without it?

The Bible is a very difficult and complex book and isn’t at all easy to understand. I am sure that God could have created a book that contained a useful collection of moral and scientific truth neatly and tidily collected for our reading enjoyment. Why leave things so jumbled, messy, and difficult to understand?

The supposition I am going with is that a book coming from God would be absolutely perfect and stand alone as proof of His existence. Imagine the way The Quran is supposed to be. It seems reasonable that a book coming from God would be absolutely perfect and contain amazing bits of knowledge of every kind.

Just a thought –

If the Bible revealed Maxwell’s equations, that knowledge would only be useful for a relatively short time, and might be an incomplete expression of scientific thought. The laws might later be eclipsed by a more elaborate expression – for example, “string theory” or a “theory of everything”…

Quite likely, and not just in the ME, but for that time almost anywhere.

Putting aside for the moment our own personal patriotisms, does the “modern” paradigm of warfare, where cities are razed and generations of young persons are made to risk neck and limbs for the glorification of their country’s leadership, make any more “sense” than the biblical pattern?
Or another example would be St Paul and slavery. Does St Paul not speak out more forcefully against slavery because he is not able to even visualize a world without it?
Aristotle, whom the philosophical crowd admires uncritically to this day, believed slavery to be necessary. And less than 200 years ago, a huge war was fought in North America over whether or not slavery was defensible. This despite the fact that by then, scores of countries already operated without it!

Is it so hard to imagine someone like Saint Paul, who never heard of a society without slavery (because no such society existed in his time) and whose vast knowledge concerned religion rather than sociology, would not have thought about creating such a sea-change in the social world?

Because we are to prepare our own minds for the life eternal by using them on things that are hard. GOD’s message is not one of comforting, pretty sayings. It is a guidepath for struggle through an entropy-ridden, heartbreaking world where even the ending is not likely to be happy, but after the end, Life Eternal will make it all worthwhile.

GOD Bless and ICXC NIKA!
