Why doesn't Michael Voris appear on EWTN?

I agree. Here at CAF, I have seen many posters who take authentic Catholic teaching seriously who take a variety of opinions in regards to Voris’ style. I don’t think it’s a matter of orthodoxy to be turned off by a more blunt form of evangelism.

We all have different temperaments. Different types of speakers appeal to different types of people. That’s fine. I am personally very grateful that there are devoted Catholics of many different personality types that are out there fighting the good fight. The “in-your-face” technique is not my particular cup of tea, but some people seem to respond quite favorably to it.

Ultimately, we’re all on the same side, even if we have some internal disagreements on how best to go about achieving the mandate to “go out to all the nations.”
Very good point. Most would acknowledge varying levels of obstinance in all people. So we should not be put off by the varying approaches of evangelization to appeal to them. What I’m more surprised about is the suggestion by some that Voris himself is unorthodox in some of his claims. Not that I know differently of him. But it’s just not an observation I’ve made as yet.

Yes, think about Jesus picking not one or two , but Twelve different Apostles each with their own weaknesses and personality querks.

Think of when John and James wanted to bring fire down upon a town :rotfl:

MV might be more in the mold of the Sons of Thunder.

St. John Chrysostom wrote, “He who is not angry where he has cause to be, sins.”

I believe he doesn’t like the climate going in the Church and in the secular climate of the US, and he wants to serve the Lord as a lay man since he isn’t called to be a priest.
We’re all given different spiritual gifts.

The truth is straight unbarnished and hard, sugarcoating it makes it more easily dismissed and scoffed away, specially by today’s secularized society, i like Vori’s style, it gets people attention, some people don’t like it, so what.
i prefer to live a hard truth than a sweet half-truth or worse, a lie. God bless Michael Voris for his heroic effort.
👍
Is it true that Mr. Voris is a polarizing figure even among orthodox Roman Catholics?
It would appear so, although I did not realize that until recently. “Polarizing” may not be the best descriptor,
Respectfully, and not to single you out, Steve. But you admit limited exposure to him so what are you basing your yes, he is “polarizing” to Orthodox Catholics on? I don’t even know what that vague question means. Even some of the public priests are polarizing to “Orthodox” Catholics. EWTN is supposed to represent Orthodox Roman Catholics? Haven’t they been sliding a little since Mother Angelica hasn’t been heading that ship?? I’ve seen Traditionalist circles, praise Voris, and their critiques with him, isn’t because he is heterodox or anything. 🤷 Nor is it w/ ‘charity’
Voris is only polarizing to those who are victim to the 21st Century Politically Correct Mentality. The ones who assume the only way to carry a message is to talk like the people on NPR. That is being adult “charitable” & civilized.

He only gets flack for the commentaries he does on the Vortex. He is no less faithful and devoted to the cause than the people on EWTN radio, etc. He used his retirement money to invest in his work. He seems motivated authentically for the Faith.
It’s all about the PC. Voris isn’t afraid to brazenly say non-anonymously & unapologetically, The CATHOLIC CHURCH IS THE ONE TRUE FAITH. And that bothers people. One should watch his interview with Catholic Canadian, Michael Coren; he’s not really an uncharitable dude. Michael Coren has been on EWTN radio, so Voris is still not separated from the others in Catholic Media. Like Liz said, it’s like Wendy’s and McDonalds.
Here is another video, Roving Reporter from Airmaria, talking to Michael Voris. There should be solidarity and support, not rejection of another Catholic trying to defend the Church in his own little way.

What I’m more surprised about is the suggestion by some that Voris himself is unorthodox in some of his claims. Not that I know differently of him. But it’s just not an observation I’ve made as yet.
I’ve followed RealCatholicTV seen his St. Michael’s Media videos. I’ve heard more unorthodox comments from other apostolates and even other public priests,
Very few times have a I heard MV where he might have been mistaken or injected an opinion on Church Tradition etc. The only video that comes to mind for me, is a nuanced position, on Homosexuals, he took, in talking about the chaste SSA Catholics being victim souls and singling them out too much.

The earlier example in the thread of him not being “orthodox” by that Former Catholic was a deliberate misrepresentation of one of Voris’ talks on the Eucharist.

*TedDC;7970880]His words go well beyond Church teaching on the Real Presence, which make no such claims of specific physiological effects, hence he would seem to be stating an unauthorized belief.

And if what Voris is saying is true, then it logically follows that a blood test on a communicant would reveal the presence of Christ’s DNA. I don’t think the Church would claim that such a result would occur. *

 I saw that video. If he really did say it literally in a way that TED implied I would have written off this guy. Before he says DNA he emphasizes consuming the FLESH. So he subtly took Voris’ comments out of context.

By reason, he was speaking figuratively, using DNA to make a point of the reality of the Lord’s Blood/Flesh & our Communion with him. It’s not like Voris thinks he isn’t talking about a Mystery. And by Voris’ actions, faithful defense of the truth, one can only conclude Voris presumed too much in the* point* he was making about the Blood, Body, Soul & Divinity against the idea that it is a mere symbol.
Voris says he’s not a scientist in one of his CIA videos, so with that in mind that Voris was somehow trying to pin down scientific biologically aspects to the Eucharist in great deal, proves the person has an agenda to attack Voris as a nut.

MV doesn’t strike me foolish enough to start to interpret things on his own without seeking authoritative sources — granted he is a former journalist, but that is besides the point! 😛 With my familiarity with his work, he takes lead from orthodox bishops, priests as well as the Teachings and Traditions of the Church. He also is not one to associate with the prideful Catholics that go off the deep end. His Research Videos, show they adhere to the concrete.
but he certainly spawns debate about how to effectively defend the faith, and thus how effective his apostolate actual is.
I don’t know if that’s in our jurisdiction. Ultimately God handles the results. This we know from the Saints. St. Faustina and her Spiritual Director promoting the Divine Mercycomes to mind.

Any results or merit from any of the apostolates are for the Lord to handle. We follow, we do. The Lord will bring about results if we are actually faithful and true…

This I’ve learned from a Franciscan priest, ’ we do not need to concern ourselves with positive results. Let God worry about that. St. Paul says, God gives the increase, man plants the seeds. Let’s just worry about doing our part as best as we can. ’

Hi there. Well, actually I did not say “yes, he is polarizing”. I said that polarizing is not a good descriptor, but that it appears he spawns debate. My somewhat limited exposure to him is not what allowed me to offer that opinion, but rather my witness to debates about his approach from Catholics who appear to be devout and orthodox. I actually am rather fond of MV, as you can see from most of my posts here.

Oh, I fully agree with you there. I didn’t mean to infer that others have the duty to determine ultimate effectiveness of an apostolate. I was merely commenting on the fact that there are varying opinions about how effective his work is in compelling those he criticizes. It indeed is an unknown to me, and to others, I’m sure. For the record, he compels me. 👍

Peace.

It seems that Voris and RealCatholicTV are getting discussed more and more lately. I recall seeing the link to RealCatholicTV’s website in Liza’s signature for years. But in the past 6 or 9 months, it seems like there is a proliferation of discussion about this apostolate.

I guess they’re getting the word out. 🙂

At
Maybe Mr. Voris could appear on The Laura Ingraham Show when Mr. Arroyo is filling in for Ms. Ingraham.
she is on EWTN? how could I have missed that?

thanks folks for more info than I ever wanted on MV, who I never heard of until a month ago, so I can pass this lovely thread on to those evaluating on-line and video programs for parish use.

a new record even for CAF 6 pages of impassioned discussion of a media figure with only two actual references to some specific point he actually broadcast

I think Arroyo fills in for Inghram on her talk show. I haven’t seen her as a host on EWTN, maybe a guest on Arroyo’s show—but I can’t remember specifically.
well who knew
I am simply entranced by the idea of an Ingrahm/Arroyo collaboration. I need a drink.

Let’s remember EWTN reaches everyone…Catholic and non-Catholic…Voris is good for making someone stronger in the Faith but I believe he would scare away anyone who wasn’t Catholic. People love Mother Angelica because she is kind and understanding when presenting the Faith without compromise…and she could get away with saying a few things about Bishops because she was seen as a cute old nun who acts the way a cute old nun is supposed to act…I don’t like some of the things Voris have said about our Bishops…especially my Bishop here in New York…do you guys remember when M.Angelica questioned Cardinal(I cringe whenever I have to use this before his name) Mahoney’s faith in the dogma of the true presence in the late 90s??? Imagine Voris! Father John Corapi was funny and explained things very well without compromising the Faith, that is why he was loved, Voris comes off as a arrogant bully(at least to me…though I agree with his message 99% of the time) If I was a questioning protestant and saw his video I’d start looking into the Episcopal church. We need more Mother Angelicas not more Michael Vorises

Hello again, Steve.

It’s okay. I was moreso trying to get the record straight on MV, and was focusing on your post comment more.
No harm done, glad to know you didn’t take my post the wrong way. I think there was an implication in this thread that MV is shunned as a rogue Catholic of some sort when he isn’t really shunned. Patrick Madrid posted news this week about WYD, pointing out the peculiarity of him being singled out.

God Bless!

I’ve thought about that too and there are some merits to that criticism. But just because he is not everyone’s cup of tea, doesn’t mean he is evangelizing wrong. There are certain Saints as models Voris & all of us need to look to in how they went about evangelizing in a different way always leading to humility. God used them both.

One can say that Voris’ heavy handed approach, gets people talking too or gets them out of their comfort zone. The funniest thing I am amused by, is that the presence on youtube, he is just out there screaming like John the Baptist. So the people that he is ruffling feathers with, might not be people who are open to Christ in the first place.

Another thing is, while CA Live reaches radio listeners. MV seems to have a presence that reaches other demographics possibly.
Saying I believe the Eucharist is the blood, soul & divinity, scares off people no matter how loud or gently you say it.
Voris comes off as a arrogant bully(at least to me…though I agree with his message 99% of the time) If I was a questioning protestant and saw his video I’d start looking into the Episcopal church. We need more Mother Angelicas not more Michael Vorises
Now, now, that’s not very charitable. Though, who can disagree with needing more Mother Angelicas?

I would recommend Catholic Answers Live who reach out to the Evangelicals for protestants to listen to. I like Patrick Coffin and the others laid back openness, they are apologists though. Voris is using his former journalism profession to serve the Church now. So his media personality, is lending to a different style. So I think it has less to do with Voris. And more to do with the message he focuses on, which is proclaiming the Good News loudly on the Internet.

He might be headstrong. I wouldn’t send his video to stubborn types. For instance , we are to be prudent when we evangelize.
I wouldn’t cast pearls before swine. But I don’t think people can judge Voris’ actions as if he is doing it “wrong.” It’s better to err on the side of being overly fervent than lukewarm. This is certainly needed in a time when all faiths assume everyone is crystallized, *"you have your truth, I have mine! " * One problem Voris’ approach might run into is casting pearls before swine. And we all go through the folly of not praying enough before we take action. Fulton Sheen talks about this.
But I think his critics focus too much on the Vortex. The CIA work he has done investigating the enemies of the Church and the Enemies against Church Teaching, is very helpful to the Laity.

We all belong to the Lord. We are all God’s. 😃 See what I did there? That’ll make a new age person’s head spin!

Besides, a primary characteristic of the truth is it’s harshness, no?
No. There are many examples of clergy, lay, and religious who speak truth without harshness. On these boards there is our own Br JR, who educates without harshness, name-calling, or shrillness. In the church there are many other examples. Some from history include Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Teresa of Lisuex. We do not have to be scolds to tell to truth.

Fair enough. 🙂

Suffice it to say that a characteristic (as valid as any other valid characteristic) of truth, is harshness. The epistles seem to support that theory in many instances.

I retract my use of the descriptor “primary”. Thanks for helping me clarify.

@Veridical16:

Very good post. Thanks.

You’re welcome, Steve. Thanks for the kind words.
I agree with you above, especially regarding the epistles.

Mrs Sally, I think this is a little subjective.
Though I agree name calling is unnecessary, I also agree that ‘you catch more flies with honey’ is something to keep in mind, if we get too convinced in our ways.
Nevertheless why I say this is still subjective is I’ve read a few Saints, Pope’s criticisms on certain audiences and bad figures, that could be perceived as scolds or Harsh by the standards of some Catholics on this forum’s view of ‘charity’; Even some of St. Paul’s writings can be misconstrued, as scold-ish…

'O you STUPID GALATIANS! " Jesus himself has some statements that are ‘harsh/scold’ Though he is God, he can say whatever he wants.
On these boards there is our own Br JR, who educates without harshness, name-calling, or shrillness.
I respectfully disagree with Br JR at times, even with some of his historical /contemporary interpretations. Sometimes his advice I reject or doesn’t ring true to me concerning Church disciplinary problems. Take this a step further. I know of two priests. One who is a little lax in regard to instruction is pretty polite in his talks. He doesn’t get to the meat of the scripture and practicing virtue. He is just nice. Compare that to a another priest that is very, very wise by way of the Lord; at times in regard to abuses regarding the Sacrament. He had to scold during one homily. He raised his voice, almost like a parent lecturing children. He was not uncharitable as he was circumspect, but he was compelled to admonish, you could see he was blunt and forthright in regard to parishioners not being reverent to receiving the Blessed Sacrament. It was a righteous indignation. St. Nicholas, for instance got righteously indignant when one bad Bishop said something regarding Our Blessed Mother.
I don’t think describing what he did to the Heretical Bishop is up to subjectivity. It goes WAY beyond harsh. 😃

So with this in mind, if someone never gets cross or “harsh” and always keeps pleasant tone, does that mean they are ALWAYS speaking the TRUTH? Is one speaking on the truth in a preferred style under *seeming ‘perfection’ *, more authoritative than one that is making a better point imperfectly? Rather, is it closer to the charitable truth, than someone who imperfectly wants to defend the Church and may be blunt at times?
And I am not talking about pounding one’s fist on the table, ’ this is WHAT YOU MUST BELIEVE or you go to Hell. ’ * Rather, standing up to be counted: * This is what IS so, this is the Good News by the grace of God we’ve come to know; be humble & wise, and follow Christ.
Mother Teresa spoke truth to power in the 1990’s and her words on paper would be misconstrued as Harsh, she upset so many liberals and abortionists, and the Clintons, for instance.

I am not trying to justify, the idea that we have to flip over the money changer tables at all times. As St. Catherine’s writings help me to understand practicing the virtue of Charity better. But we can’t sacrifice Truth for the sake of coming off Saintly in appearance. Truth & Charity go hand in hand, and in this day and age, the devil’s favorite virtue is false tolerance & non-judgmentalism, and the ability to mistake passive indifference , for charity.

I think the criticisms are valid to be cautious that we not be overly zealous without prayer in the equation. We still have to meditate on St. Peter. Imperfect as we are, we have an inclination, to cut off people’s ears, in defending the Lord without prayer, and without courage from the Holy Spirit. Sometimes getting angry at the way things aren’t supposed to be, without praying to God first, come from a weakness in faith.
Rather we need to meditate on what Peter did wrong there (he was still afraid of the Cross/The Holy Sacrifice) in regard to charity, v. Peter in ACTS when he takes charge replaces Judas with Matthias, and by the Holy Spirit is able to tell the Jews to their faces you crucified the Lord.

Acts 2
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart
Doesn’t sound like the Truth was pleasant for them to hear.

And this supports Steve’s statement about harshness being a characteristic of the Truth; or a component at times,

Acts 7
You stubborn people with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always opposing the Holy Spirit, just as your ancestors used to do. 52Which of the prophets did your ancestors fail to persecute? They killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One, and now you have become his betrayers and murderers. 53You received the law as ordained by angels, and yet you haven’t obey it!
Stephen is Stoned to Death
54While they were listening to these things, they became more and more furious and began to grind their teeth at him.
Who coincidentally, speaking the truth boldly is exemplified by his namesake! St. Stephen.

But before people go running into the Synagogues, this part is important to that component of bold preaching of the Truth.
But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” 57But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears and rushed togetherb at him. 58Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

On the other hand, there have been too many scandals that have been soft peddled, especially by bishops. I find it odd that many bishops are put off by Archbishop Chaput. who is the soul of discretion. They don’t like criticism even in the softest of terms.

I apologize for that it was a bit in the moment…I do not know the man and cannot say if he is arrogant or a bully and I believe we are a Church who can have both Voris and Angelica;) I think the internet is a perfect place for him…those who want to see him can see him and God can chose who He want to stumble upon him instead. Who can blame him for being arrogant if he is proclaiming the Truth, when your doing such a important job you can become a bit full of himself.👍
