Very good points. But I think Gailmac is correct when it comes to the ruthless, bloodiness of Anglican history. Drawing and quartering Catholic priests, cutting them in half and torturing them before magistrates is appauling. And “Bloody” Mary Tudor is infamous in Anglican history but the reality is that far more Catholics were butchered under the Anglican regimes than under Mary.
You’re correct that Anglican illegitimacy as priests is tied to their beliefs and lack of proper form and intention rather than by their actions. The Catholic Church has had its share of bloodiness in Europe.
The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. If you look at Anglicanism, not its behavior, but its beliefs, you’ll see a church that condones homosexuality, female priests, is all over the place theologically, doesn’t know if it’s Catholic or Protestant, in some places actually performs divorce ceremonies, has divorced and remarried clergy, largely tolerates abortion and even partial birth abortion at times, and it has no authority. I have heard the excuse, “yeah, well my Church is not with the liberal Episcopal Church, we’re aligned with Zimbabwe or Adis Ababa or Cairo” lol…but that only points to the problem even deeper. The Anglican Church is polarized, broken, confused, and there is no real Anglican identity. The claim that lex orendi, lex credendi motto but they have so many varieties of expression of beliefs and so many don’t even stick to the Book of Common Prayer 39 Articles that one can scarcely figure out an Anglican ethos? They talk up the 39 Articles but then adore the Host and reserve it etc. The response always is, “well the 39 Articles aren’t binding.”
Right now here in California the liberal and lunatic Episcopal Church is suing the Diocese of San Joaquin that broke off and joined with the Southern Cone of Argentina. Last week the State of California sided with the liberal kookoo Episcopapagan Church and claimed that the ‘conservatives’ that broke off have to give their property back to the Episcopagans. My first reaction was to feel sorry for those conservatives who lost their property; it’s always sad to see liberal folks with neo-pagan sensibilities infused into a pseudo-Christian sect win over people with more traditional values. But after thinking it over, maybe God is doing these ‘conservatives’ a favor and many of them will wake up and return to Rome. These folks should be Catholic in the first place. Maybe losing the property will give them perspective and God’s pointing them back home…
The Anglican Church(es) are a mess. Their history is troubling enough. Beyond the blood and heresies they’ve fostered, I’d be more concerned about their lack of unity, chaos, theatrics, and pagan beliefs in 2009 than their troubling past.
