Thanks, again, JimG. Concerning my original question to the pros, I have very little doubt that you are correct.

The Vatican seems always to be forming Commissions of scientists or foremost experts for advice on this or that. That’s what I meant by a “consensus of Catholic scientists”. You are no doubt aware that today it is necessary to distinguish between the latter scientists and the anti-Catholic “scientists” such as comprise the The Jesus Seminar; according to Wikipedia “a group of about 200 individuals who include ‘scholars with advanced degrees in biblical studies, religion or related fields [as well as] published authors who are recognized authorities in the field of religion’ .” The ignorance and anti-Catholic bias of such “scholars” is, in my opinion, stunning–which is why they are sought after by Cable TV and other secular media.

Yes, those “Jesus Seminar” types always seem to approach their analyses with certain preconceived ideas, such as ‘miracles are not possible, therefore any scriptural accounts of miracles’ must be accretions or additions.’ Not very scholarly.

And it’s also possible that creatures that anthropologists call homo sapiens but from pre-historic eras (i.e. apparent humans but with no evidence of writing or written history) may have been qualitatively different from what the Church considers ensouled human beings.

But that’s something that neither anthropology or scripture is likely to be able to determine, so it’s doubtful that either group would be willing to make a hypothesis that involved an intangible such as the human soul.

It is not to be wondered why you are not being answered immediately with that question because the Church holds and protects the truth of Faith that is necessary for salvation, and your concern is outside the category. That should be answered by archeologists or scientists maybe, not by the Church.

Another Australopithecus fossil was the “Taung child”, discovered in 1924, in a cave in South Africa.
The skull had a puncture wound. Theories included that it was inflicted by a baboon with a sharp stone, a hungry leopard, and the talons of an eagle.

The Dinosaurs and many of the other large prehistoric reptiles existed in the Mesozoic era of the Phanerozoic aeon.
The Mesozoic era ran from about 250 million years ago to 65 million years ago.
Thats 185 million years of Dinosaur domination, no wonder the Mesozoic era was commonly referred to as the age of the Dinosaurs.

vanillae, why the aggression? If one of us seems to want to argue, it’s you. Is that serving the Lord? I’ve already told you I don’t care about the age of the earth; why then do you insist that I asked about it? Church Fathers did, not me.

If you had bothered to read this thread before jumping on me, you would have known that I asked why Catholic Q&A pros on other Forums never answered this question: Whether the “begats” in Genesis may have enabled scientists to narrow down the APPRXIMATE time, in tens of thousands of years, that Adam and Eve (i.e., my idea of “mankind”) lived. Therefore, I was hoping to start a discussion of that topic, here, from the point of view of the Vatican and Catholic scientists (there is a difference because some so-called scientists are not open minded when it comes to our Faith.) From the answers above, it would appear that the Vatican has never commissioned a study of the subject.
