Well former Catholics I know . say they don’t get blessed or empowered with grace. So it’s only an obligation.

There are no former Catholics. A baptised Catholic remains a Catholic forever even if he turns his back on the Church and walks away.
There are only two types of Catholic - those in a state of grace and those in a state of mortal sin.
