Prodigal_40s:
What upset me most is that the BBC defended it.
You were upset that the BBC, having commissioned and produced a science fiction TV show, defended it? Curious.

I think you read into it in a different light than maybe you should have.

As a long standing Doctor Who fan who (haha…) has seen every episode available to view from 1966 to the present day (I’m not that old, I just found them all)…Doctor Who has never been a religious show. They may not even be using the term Soul in the way you are thinking. The machine that allows them to do what they are doing in that episode goes back to the Fourth Doctor, it is a machine that takes the conscious mind and places it in a computer matrix. By hitting “delete” you aren’t destroying a soul, you are removing emotions from the conscious mind.

You might want to go back and watch the episode where the 10th Doctor encounters Satan. I expected a semi-sci-ency “we aren’t admitting religion” explanation by the end. At the end though, The Doctor could only admit that he had no idea what he was dealing with but it was something he deemed impossible, and he is not a religious man.

Mate you can justify it and read whatever you like into it. I know that Doctor Who is not a religious man because he’s a fictional character but there are impressionable kids who don’t have your interpretative skills who watch it and might disregard the WORD which is over and above your explanation…I mean excuses

The whole point of the plot is that the conscious mind is stripped of its emotions and downloaded into Cybermen. It’s actually exactly what Cybermen have always done, except with a lie and a computer matrix as the middle man.

I honestly don’t understand why you would stop watching a show because kids might watch it and take it the wrong way (very likely, kids won’t take it any way at all except face value). The BBC is a very socially liberal organization and those values will be reflected in their programming, just as they always have been. It’s unfortunate, I’d rather they be open to the existence of God, but I don’t understand not watching it. There are shows that are much, much worse out there about that sort of thing.

As a side note, if I were going to choose something in Doctor Who that would offend me because I thought it was going against the Word of God, I might choose the second episode of the new series where the 9th Doctor and Rose go to a station in orbit of future Earth and the first thing you hear is a voice prohibiting “weapons, (forget what it was), and religion” since it’s basically saying Religion is on the same level as weaponry.

I thank you for citing a further example and proving my point. The point I’m making is that people who value the faith should prohibit small children from watching it and inform older kids how wrong some of the show’s output is

The whole “Don’t Blink” thing turned me off ever considering to watch this show (along with the massive backlog of storylines for a show that’s been going since the 70’s). Weeping Angels are the most idiotic idea for an alien race I have ever seen. Brilliant concept for a race of Fairies or some othe fantasy creature (man-eating monsters that hide as statues and don’t move as long as their being observed), but NOT Sci-Fi.

Plus I hate people who act as if the things are real, even if they’re just being playful and joking about it. If they were real, then the Doctor could have just put on a welding mask and smashed them all with a sledgehammer. They would all die (they should anyway from the whole “become stone then become organic” thing) and an opaque eye-covering visor should bypass the blinking thing.

But hey, that’s neither here nor there, and I now have more very legitimate reasons to hate this show thanks to this thread. Thanks! 🙂

Quick correction: Doctor Who has been going since 1963. It’s even older than me!

God is everything and has no beginning or end. I think that might trump the Doctor Who’s lengthy run

I’ve watched a fair number of Doctor Who episodes just to see what the buzz was about, but I really wasn’t that impressed. I actually liked the classic Who episodes much more; these I got to watch last year when BBC-America had a monthly special featuring “classic” episodes featuring each actor to play the Doctor, so they showed episodes with the First Doctor in January, the Second Doctor in February, and so on.

As for homosexuality, it is shown (though not explicitly), but I don’t think it really is meant to upstage heterosexuality. The “new Who” episodes (well, at least for Ten and Eleven) are just sexed up in general compared to the old ones, The Tenth Doctor kissed pretty much ALL his female companions (though not all the kisses were in a romantic context). I also did not like how they showed the Doctor essentially bragging about prior sexual conquests. Why was that needed? The whole idea that the Doctor was involved with prominent historical women such as Madame Pompadour, Queen Elizabeth I, Marilyn Monroe, etc, just struck me as tacky, it’s the kind of behavior you’d expect from a James T. Kirk type character, which the classic Doctor was not.

Now, although the New Who is not marketed as a kids’ show the same way the original episodes seem to have been, I know many British kids do watch the show (I saw a BBC clip of entire families crowding into movie theaters to watch the Day of the Doctor special), and I doubt they really care about the Doctor’s sex life. Now, it is true the old episodes did show many attractive female companions but they were certainly NOT romantically involved with the Doctor.

All this being said, I don’t really blame Davies and Moffat for this, from what I understand, the original show was heading in an edgier direction even before it went on hiatus; the show-runners for the Seventh Doctor did admit they were purposefully inserting anti-Thatcher commentary. Also, the backstory for the companion, Ace, involved her being essentially a sexual abuse victim, though this is not explicitly stated in the show, she is presented as a very troubled teenager (she actually MAKES BOMBS and stows them in her backpack), and certainly out for revenge on her abuser, Glitz. Not only that, the writer for the last Old Who episode, Survival, has stated that she was aiming for a “lesbian subtext” in a relationship between Ace and an alien, Karra. (All this is from Wikipedia but it was sourced well.)
