Then I need your help to understand the significance of Jesus breathing on them and telling them to receive the Holy Spirit.John 20:23
If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."
Roman Catholics and others claim this verse was only for The Apostles and ‘particular priests’ with ‘apostolic succession. I think that it is nonsense.
Luke 17:4
4If he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times comes back to you and says, ‘I repent,’ forgive him."
If the Roman Catholic line of only ‘priests’ being able to forgive sins is correct then this verse must only be for them and not other Christians. After all what would be the point of a Christian ‘layperson’ forgiving someone if they that someone was still going to burn in Hell.
It is most bizarre.
John 20:21-23
[21] Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.”
[22] And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
[23] If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
