raaucoin,

What a wise, beautiful and courageous set of posts. I wanted to let you know that you are not alone in your celibacy. Many people who are hetereosexual but divorced face some similar challenges.

God Bless
.

Seriously? I mean really? I think some homosexuals might, might have a degree of choice over their innate desires, but these are people more often who identify as “bisexual”…most homosexuals do not chose their innate sexual orientation any more than you and I choose to be straight, we are who we are.

But more to the point, this is a decidedly unnecessary post. Raacoin is to be prayed for, lifted up, and encouraged for this heavy cross she is bearing, not given a lecture. I think as a lesbian woman, she probably has a good deal more insight into what it really is like to be a lesbian than you or I do.

Raacoin, thank you for your testimony, it is encouraging for all to hear of someone who has such a love and desire for Christ and his Church as to overcome such a difficult personal obstacle to faith that your orientation proves to be for many others who have SSA. I will pray for your continued strength, and your joy and peace in the Lord!
Really? this person is living in sin and you are condoning it?Its ok to be homosexual and partake in homosexual acts? May I remind you that Jesus is quite clear in Matthew 12:36-37 "I tell you on the day of judgement people will have to render an account for every careless word we speak by your words we will be acquitted and by your words we will be condemned " She needs our prayers of course ,not be able to cope with being a homosexual . That is a choice she made . Its a cross she chooses to carry . This liberal Catholic thought needs to stop .

Defender1: Looks like you are referring to me. According to the teaching of the Catholic Church of which Benedict the sixteenth is Supreme Pontiff, I am not living in sin. Yes, I experience SSA. No, I do not have sexual relations with anyone. OOps I lied,I do at times “live in sin”, but sexual sin is not one of them. The cross I choose to carry is to unite all difficulties in my life to the Cross of Jesus. I don’t believe that is "liberal " Catholic thought, just Catholic.
You are right I need your prayers and not to deal with being a homosexual, but there is a neighbor I am quickly loosing patience with at home, a colleague I feel as if I could choke, and two terriers that don’t allow me adequate sleep so some days I take it out on the first person I see in the morning. But if you still think I’m living in some other serious sin, please pray for me.

Wait. Do you realize that you said both that being gay is a choice and that being gay is a result of parental upbringing? So you’re saying we choose how our parents bring us up? Or…what were you saying?

Whatever your answer, you did not note that you were merely expressing your own opinion. The Church does not teach that homosexuals choose their orientation. The Church does not blame parents for homosexuality in their offspring. The Church also does not teach that all trials of this life are chosen by the person who has them. That’s you talking, not the Church.
I realize that I brought up both . Now instead of putting a spin on what I said let me explain . Bad upbringing led the individual to making this poor choice to be a homosexual and engage in homosexual acts . Let me tell you what the Bible says which is backed by the church about those taking part in homosexual acts : Gen 19:1-4 The story of Sodom and Gomorrah is a clear example of God’s disliking towards homosexual acts . And so you spin this let me give a a quote so you know that homosexual acts is what went on there " Where are the men who came to your house tonight?Bring them out so that we may have intimacies with them " .Lets turn to Leviticus 18:22 “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman : such a thing is an abomination .” Lets turn to 1Cor 6:9-10 and 1Tim 1:10 both say that sodomites are not to inherit the kingdom . Now some may see "She is a lesbian not a male homosexual . " Are we saying that God has a double standard here? WE are allowed to have female homosexuals but not male homosexuals? That of course not cannot be the case . Now this liberal Catholic thought is getting ridiculous .

Whether God has, or hasn’t, made persons gay is speculative. We have no way of knowing. We do know that God allows suffering in the world and some say that homosexuality is burden to be shouldered, much as Christ carried his own cross.

The exact cause of homosexuality is still in dispute, but a biological basis can not be ruled out. Yes, God could prevent homosexuality if he wanted, however he could do the same thing for birth defects and yet doesn’t. This doesn’t mean that God wants babies to suffer from defects… he just allows it to happen.

As for the OP’s statement of faith, I applaud it. Some people at CAF take the position that a gay or lesbian person should keep that information private. However, Christ carried his cross through the center of Jerusalem for all to see. I think knowing that a person is carrying a burden, yet remaining faithful to God, is an encouragement for all of us.

First off let me say that I just read your longer message . I did not mean to come off as a rude hateful person . I will pray that you dont go off the neighbor lol. Have a great 4th of July , Frankie

What’s the exact cause of

-adults who like children
-adults who are adulterous
-adults who engage in prostitution,
-adults who engage in swinging, etc.
-adults who have fetishes and dwell on other peculiarities
-adults who nurse all manner of things in their imagination?

What’s the cause of all these?

What did Chesterton say…something to the effect of even a man visiting a bordello is still looking for God.

I think, unprofessional opinion only (but then again the professionals haven’t been really of one mind or of much help on this topic over the last 50 years) many of these non-normalities are people who are trying to find happiness in largely self-pleasure.

And that’s not how our soul has been constituted.

I mean they choose to be homosexual .
Has it ever even crossed your mind that you may be wrong? Entirely wrong?

Tragically in error to think you know God’s intent when He created homosexuals?

Convicted of being as flawed as any other sinner by your own mouth?

I must say you make for a stunning example of man’s fallen state in today’s world?

Speaking absolutely about God’s will and reasons for His creations, is inherently dangerous in my humble opinion, as an admittedly flawed and fallible man.

I believe God loves homosexuals as much as any of us. I may be wrong, but at least I admit it.

Thanks for the prayer! You didn’t come off (to me,anyway) as rude and hateful.Just as someone passionate about the faith, as I am too.Happy fourth to you too, and lets give thanks to God together that we are in a country where we can have these conversations about faith. May God Bless you and yours, RAA.

There are many in the world who think they can’t have a relationship with the Lord and with His Church until absolutely every issue is resolved-including that they “identify” as homosexual. And many of those will be lost if we as Church don’t encourage them to “come as you are” trusting that (if they truly seek the will of God and are committed to finding and following His will) the Power of God is fantastically transforming.
That’s for sure! 👍
(Although I’m not sure who would be suggesting otherwise.) Is there someone on this thread who is suggesting that?

A point in this statement, though that conflicts with a previous statement of yours ("Ain’t doing ___; ain’t doing _____ “-- end of discussion”)

When we are
trusting that (if they truly seek the will of God and are committed to finding and following His will) the Power of God is fantastically transforming
…Such seekers ^ will not announce that they will never do this, never do that, or even believe that privately. For to do such is to close off the action of the Spirit. Thus, those who believe they will (or can) “never” forgive so-and-so for doing such-and-such permanently devastating action upon them, will, if they are truly open to the Spirit, find that forgiveness is not impossible. Those people like myself who said once that I would “never” have children, were surprised that my assumptions could be changed, once I became open. I could not have predicted or anticipated that ahead of time, had I relied on my long-standing assumptions of what was and was not “possible.”

to your first point:
I was referring to folks who have misinformation and/or misunderstanding and feel they cannot approach the Lord or the Church–I meet many people like this every day.

and your second:
I believe you are referring to a statement I made regarding apparent confusion about the words chastity and celibacy. :“never mind the definitions, I aint getting married and I aint having sex-use whatever word you like.” I was writing in present tense. TODAY! I’m not getting married or having sex. I also mentioned that this is all a process of conversion and discernment and perhaps tomorrow I may feel differently about things. I have definitely learned that its useless to tell God “end of discussion” about anything!! And I dont believe I wrote that in the post. Hope that clears up anything that seemed conflicting!

Thanks for the clarification between present tense and future. It has become a colloqualism for some to use the present participle (“am doing, am not doing”) to refer to future intentions as well. Glad that’s not what you meant.

Good for you, Raaucoin! My only concern would be by announcing yourself as a lesbian would be leading other peopel to think the worst about your stance and lifestyle, if you explain your life as it stands and the sinfulness of action of same sex attraction, then you do yourself and those around a great service.

I have a friend who is in an openly lesbian relationship and they are talking about “marriage” - they live in an Euro country where civil unions of sorts are legal. She is also catholic and goes to mass each week with her life partner. I pray for the both of them that they can come to the same conclusion you have obviously so prayerfully done!

God bless you!
Thank you and I pray with you for them.

Do you know any actual homosexuals? Anyone who has experimented with homosexuality? Not only does what you’re saying not match what science has learned, but what you’re saying does not fit the people I know. Even if it were true here and there (I’m not convinced of that, but let’s allow the possibility), it certainly is not always true. Knowing them growing up, you could tell they were different, but what they struggled with wasn’t a thing that their parents did to them. Even the heterosexual who experiment with homosexuality (the ones that I know) don’t have their parents treatment of them to trace it to. They were treated the same as their siblings who had no desire in that direction at all.

The Bible speaks in terms of action, not orientation. It does not say, “A man shall not look upon a man as if he were a woman; such a thing is an abomination”. Now, I’m not saying that lust is OK if it is homosexual lust. Of course it is not! I’m saying that the passages you are referring to are about actions. As you point out, it says nothing about women, except that they are not to have sex outside of marriage, either. In effect, what the Bible says is that homosexual sex outside of marriage is not a separate case from other sex outside of marriage.

Note what St. Paul wrote in Romans, too…he is talking about heterosexuals choosing to exchange not only homosexual orientation but homosexual acts for their previous heterosexual relationships. This is not the same as someone who has never had a heterosexual orientation; rather, he was talking about a sexual “fashion” prevalent in the “avante garde” people of his time. He is not talking about someone who has an orientation they never asked for:
Therefore, God handed them over to degrading passions. Their females exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and the males likewise gave up natural relations with females and burned with lust for one another. Males did shameful things with males and thus received in their own persons the due penalty for their perversity. And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God handed them over to their undiscerning mind to do what is improper.** 1 Rom. 1:26-27**

There is nothing there to suggest that he would not have compassion for someone who had an orientation or a trial they did not choose. There is the opportunity for sin there, too, but it is a very different case.

Knowing them growing up, you could tell they were different, but what they struggled with wasn’t a thing that their parents did to them.
I’m sorry but you have absolutely no intimate knowledge to be able to discern what you proclaim. The influence of our parents on us, is for all of us, a complex phenomenon, one which does not become apparent in the short term, necessarily, and which we tend to work out – positively, negatively, and neutrally – over time in our own childhood and adulthood. In fact, we are affected by all of our relationships, but no more true is that than the intimate relationships (including with siblings) within our birth family, with “issues” being replayed and worked out, for some people, until death. This is the primary and primordial “laboratory” which forms our self-concept.

Very often we are unaware of how our behavior is a reaction to (again, positively or negatively) our parents’ behavior with/toward us. Much of our self-concept is formed from unconscious dynamics between our parents and ourselves, so for you or for me to say “my parents had/have no effect on my sexuality” is not a reliable statement. Nor is the effect on that sexuality, of which psychologists speak, necessarily an overt and direct one – such as comments on a child’s masculinity/femininity, etc.

Truly unconditional love is rare in parenting. The exceptionally secure parent and exceptionally virtuous parent is able to provide that, but it is far more typical to register covert & indirect disapproval of a child who in some sense is "different’ (no matter in what way different) and/or a “disappointment.” Most of the time, our imperfect parenting will not, thankfully, have a disastrous result, nor will it necessarily result in a homosexual lifestyle. However, with enough original biological impetus for an individual, combined with encouraging influences from other individuals (or from society), combined with absent parenting, disconnected parenting, or ambivalent parenting, a perfect storm is unsurprising.

It’s not a question of what parents “did” “to” a person – your friend or my friends. It’s more often what was not done “to,” and especially “for.” Neither someone from the outside, nor even the individual in question, is necessarily in the best (short-term) position to make an objective judgment about that. It takes the individual honestly examining his entire pattern of response to family dynamics, in a professional setting, to determine that with the help of a professional.

It’s extremely logical that those who may have an inclination for SSA might end up with an intimate partner who accepts him or her fully, and that such a compensation for previous inadequate validation of his or her integrity restores that self-image which he needed most in his early, primary formation of an identity.

Btw, personally I know lots of homosexuals, some of them for many, many years, and some of them in my own family.

Most conclusions on homosexuality here respond to the question of why it is not a choice by saying that it is a cross to bear. What does this actually mean? Is it any explanation? It cannot literally be a cross to bear in the same sense as Jesus’ cross, because Jesus bore that cross - no more crosses need to be borne!

Well, think what that means is that everyone is given, or allowed by God to experience, some trials in life. There are those with lifelong disabilities, with lifelong body image issues, with depression, with a proclivity to addictions, etc. All are not called to live a worry and problem free life, but rather to bear up under the weight of whatever pains they are called to carry. SSA would be a heavy weight to carry indeed. Hope that helps explain it.

As you have identified yourself as an atheist, and based on your comment, I can assume with reasonable certainty that you don’t read the Bible much. If your comment wasn’t tounge in cheek…

Crosses do need to be born. Christ tells us not only that we need to bear a cross, but that we must do so every single day.

***Then he said to all, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily *and follow me. (Luke 9:23)

We all struggle against temptation to sin. Paul, speaking to the Hebrews about Jesus and our need to struggle against tempation to sin has this to say,

For the sake of the joy that lay before him he endured the cross, despising its shame, and has taken his seat at the right of the throne of God. Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart. In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood. (Hebrews 12:2-4)

The cross we bear may not be literal - not too many people get crucified nowadays that I am aware of - but it is no less heroic. And if called upon, we be willing even to shed our own blood in the struggle, to follow Christ to the death rather than sin.

I make no comment about homosexuality or its causes. I’m only pointing out Christianitie’s belief in the need to struggle against sin in reference to your question about literally bearing a crucifixion cross. The phrase “Bear one’s cross” was not meant to be taken literally.
