Why in the world would anyone ever use BC pills?

People use birth control pills because they have been indoctrinated by their schools, family, friends, and doctors that it is the responsible and intelligent thing to do. It seems that it has gotten to a point where even practicing Catholics do not know that using birthcontrol is wrong and unsafe. You want to see expressions of surprise? Try and convey that message in the average women’s Bible study. People are actually convinced of the misconception that the Church is okay with using birth control pills if the couple is happily married and has had children or plans to eventually. What’s more, they assume it is safe because doctors will actually give it to teenage girls for acne! Then we wonder why so many women have difficulty getting pregnant after two-decades of being on a pill that stiffles their natural reproductive cycles!
Using BC is wrong but using BC is quite safe, at least compared to using most medications; BC has a very low side effect index.

What medications are you comparing it to? I’m pretty sure there are much safer treatments for acne and mentrual cramps. It’s well known that BC medications cause high blood pressure and in some cases even more severe problems such as blood clots. I don’t see the point of comparing it to something like radiation treatment or heart disease medication. Those are not given to perfectly healthy people in order to stop the healthy natural order of their bodies. They are given to people who are at even more risk if they don’t take them because their bodies are not working correctly.

Well, I’m comparing BC to tylenol, benedryl, Zyrtec, and prescription drugs like Ambien, high-cholesterol meds.

We don’t have to trump up untruths about BC to understand that using it is wrong.

There are plenty of secular reasons for not using birth control pills as well. Birth control pills can cause weight gain, blood clots, and all sorts of health issues. I have also heard that they are considered to be carcinogenic.

Greetings to the OP, to those reading and or posting in this thread,

They use BC pills because they do not have Faith in Divine Providence - meaning that they do not believe that God will take care of them and provide the number of children that they need to have.

God Bless.

Most people do more damage to their bodies simply by eating typical western diet.

This is a misrepresentation. For clarification:

In other words, all participants are Christan, the majority of whom are Catholics. There are no “anyone who used NFP”…it is restricted to a population segment.

Select a random sample of atheists and randomly select which ones will use NFP and BC, this way the religious factor is eliminated from the study. If the results from that study conclude similar results, you’ll have something to hang your hat on.
The majority of people who get divorced in this country are CHRISTIANS. In fact, most studies I read have evangelical Christians having the highest divorce rate. Catholics, as a whole have almost the same rate as the rest of the population. Atheists usually have a lower divorce rate. So you are assuming that atheists have a higher divorce rate than Christians in general, which is false. They have a lower divorce rate. Very few people, including atheists , want to get divorced.
Look up studies on the internet, atheists usually have a LOWER divorce rate than Christians. **
As I wrote before, the study I mentioned, from the Family of the Americas had a divorce rate of 0.20%. The sociologist had to adjust this study for ordinary Catholics,
those who usually have a divorce rate of 30-50%**. These ordinary Catholics who used NFP had a divorce rate of 4%

Again, the majority of the population, about 89% of this country are Christians. They are the ones with the 30-50% divorce rate. Look up the divorce rate of Catholics. It is the same as the rest of the country.

Why in the world would Catholics ever want to use birth control pills

It is a fact that birth control pills simulate pregnancy. It is a fact that they decrease the sex drive of women while they are taking them. The men end up begging for sex.
It makes for miserable marriages.
It makes for misery for the husbands in marriage and a miserable husband makes the wife miserable.
It causes a high divorce rate, this is a fact.
It is against God’s teachings. Thus those who practice it convince themselves that God is wrong. This turns them away from prayer and the sacraments, which are the source of grace to over come sins. Thus, they become slaves of sin. This causes more misery.
It turns they away from using God as a direction in their lives. For if God is wrong about artificial birth control, how could we trust Him on other things?

Birth control pills are dangerous. They do cause blood clots which can lead to strokes which can lead to paralysis or death. This is a well known side effect and there are the bc pill makers are constantly being sued.

They ARE carcinogenic. The estrogens they contain are listed by the world health organization as carcinogenic. They DO increase the breast cancer rate.
When they were promoted in Africa to suppress the populations there, the breast cancer rate went up 600%. They are far more dangerous than DDT.

They do cause the death of unborn babies.
This is because the original BC pills which suppressed ovulation had so many side effects that the makers of the pills had to lower the estrogen content. So now they permit ovulation, and thus conception, but they alter the lining of the uterus so that the baby cannot implant, thus it dies. Over a life time hundreds of such babies die.

The divorce caused by these pills results in children who are 10 times more likely to be incarcerated and 5 time more likely to commit suicide.

For all these reasons and more, which only God knows fully, He has handed down teachings, through His Church that using artificial control contraception is a mortal sin.

Why would any Catholic want to use a method of family planning which increases the divorce rate to that of the rest of the population, makes for children who are miserable because of the divorce, makes for misery in marriages, causes the death of the unborn babies, goes against God’s plan for our happiness, turns us away from God by losing faith in His teachings, causes strokes, breast cancer, and causes us to commit mortal sin? I can’t understand the pure ignorance of people who blindly follow moral behavior promoted by groups like planned parenthood and SOME large drug companies that just want to make money and don’t care about marriages, and reject God’s plan for our happiness.

Do you really think that people make that distinction? Or is it more that they don’t understand?

I know that when I used ABC, I had no idea that it was against the teaches of the Catholic Church. I wasn’t going against anything, as far as I knew.🤷

Once again you are painting with too broad a brush. First of all like was pointed out before Not all women experience a lower sex drive on the pill or at least not much of a lower one. Also NFP can have similar effects because most of the time you are only having sex when the woman is least likely to want it! And sure for women with high sex drives who pretty much want it all the time anyway this might not be a problem. But if you are dealing with a woman who has a lower sex drive as it is then add in the problem of almost never being able to have sex the rare times she really is in the mood… pretty soon you end up with a unhappy man and woman!

I have yet to see any real evidence that it is the pill alone causing these divorces. Like was pointed out before most people using NFP are also the type that donlt believe in divorce under most or even any circumstances. It is more likely though that your average person using the pill will be someone that thinks divorce is ok. But there is more then one factor to consider. And I am willing to bet that most marriages in general who use the pill are happy or if they are not happy chances are it has little or nothing to do with pill usage. Yes there are some marriages that are unhappy with the pill I doubt this is the majority though.

From reading these boards the people who are Catholics who use birthcontrol or donlt use birthcontrol but are open about their dislike and skepticism on Church teachings on sex, aren’t people who have thrown away every other teaching of the Church or people who have turned away from God. And the issue here isn;t wondering whether God is right or not on something. The issue is wondering whether Man is right or not. Cause really like it has been pointed out before alot of the teachigns on sex seem to be based mainly on tradition. Basically it seems to come down to the Church says so that is why. Those who have had problems with NFP and church teachigns on sex might look deeper into things and if they can;t find satisfactory answers may soon find themselves asking is this teaching really from God? Or are we just harming our marriage following teachings from Man? Though I donlt know anyone on this board who is Catholic who uses the pill just for bc purposes however there are a few condom uses I believe.

The pill can cause blood clots yes but mainly in people who are at high risk of that happening. People who smoke for instance. A healthy person in most cases has little to worry about. Also most people who use the pill probably wonlt get breast cancer or if they do you have to consider other factors involved for instance family history and even things like diet. You can;t just point at the pill and say that caused it!!

It is doubtful once again that the pill is actually causing the divorces. Normally there are other factors involved. I mean do you really think all these people would have happy marriages if they just went off the pill?

But really you need to stop just painting with that broad brush!

Folks use BC because it’s convinient and has few side effects.

As Catholics we understand that BC is not consistent with the social order so we shouldn’t use it but to deny that it is quite useful for couples doesn’t make any sense.
Well, maybe, but abortion is quite useful for some couples as well, no?

Yeah, we do need to recognize the reasons why couples use ABC in order to formulate good apologetics against contracepted sex.
People smoke cigarettes, don’t get enough sleep, don’t exercise, watch TV programming that even they think is stupid just becuase it is what is on, buy lottery tickets, fail to study for exams, don’t show up for court dates, fail to wear seatbelts, eat things that they know will increase their likelihood of getting cancer, diabetes, stroke, and cancer, and spend billions of dollars a year trying to look better and to lose weight without having to eat less or take care of themselves.

Now think about that. Why on earth would it surprise you that people would try to regulate their family size with a pill instead of behavioral change that require education, forethought, and self-control?
😃

Truer words have not been spoken.

Why in the world would anyone ever use BC pills? Because they don’t want to become pregnant, and they don’t trust NFP because it has a poor reputation, and they don’t feel that they have to abstain from having sex with their spouse. Believe it or not, this is a big issue: not everyone believes that one must obstain from having sex with their spouse no matter what conservative Catholics might believe.

Some people think there is something noble about not being able to share the marital embrace with your spouse to avoid pregnancy. Others disagree. They still need that emotional and physical bonding with their spouse. And unless there is a more dire need not to share it (for example, physical illness or injury), they’re not going to inflict it on themselves. Pure and simple. While some people wonder why on earth people think they have the right to have sex with their spouse whenever they want without restrain, others are wondering why on earth people think they don’t have the right to have sex with their spouse whenever they want without restraint. I suspect that the two sides of the fence will never understand each other, but sometimes that happens.

Whenever taking a medication, one has to weigh the benefits with the risks. For people who don’t have underlying medical conditions, the benefits of taking ABCs well outweigh the risks of becoming pregnant. For those with minimal risks, those who are taking ABCs find it riskier to get pregnant, therefore, they accept the risks associated with ABCs.

Like it or not, utilizing NFP for avoiding pregnancy is a big leap of faith. The numbers speak for itself when you look at couples who use NFP: they have bigger families. When people are trying to avoid getting pregnant, they’re trying to avoid getting pregnant, not play roulette. Only the most conservative of Catholics are going to use NFP or use complete abstenance, again, as is shown in the numbers. The number of Catholics (and everyone else) using ABCs speaks for the faith (or lack thereof) people have in NFP as an effective tool to avoid becoming pregnant.

Also, the majority of those who use NFP are “open to life” which usually means, it’s okay if they get pregnant, so they say that NFP is working for them — because it’s okay if they get pregnant. When someone is truly trying NOT to become pregnant, they’re not thinking, “well it’s okay if I get pregnant”.

“Open to life” to others means “accepting the pregnancy if it happens”, not “well okay, I don’t mind getting pregnant, let’s use NFP”. ABC, while against the rules of the Church, truthfully is convenient, easy, reliable and removes the fear and anxiety associated with sharing the marital embrace with your spouse. Even here on CAF, we see that half of devout Catholics who use NFP, hate it. I can’t even count how many posters have said it has caused problems in their marriage and that they were happier using ABCs and only stopped because they became aware of the rules of the Church.

The only thing NFP has going for it, quite simply and honestly, is that it’s the only method the Church will allow for controlling conceptions. Are ABCs more risky with regards to health issues? Sure — but so is eating, breathing, drinking, and any other environmental factors that we take into account. Looking at the whole health perspective picture (physical, mental and spiritual), it’s really not that hard to understand why most people won’t even give NFP a thought.

Less cramps (or no cramps) , light flow if any at all. I think a lot of women are on the pill for that reason alone!

Wonder if there is an alternative?

I dont want to use ABC due to the Church teachings. I still wouldnt say the pill is awful because I cant use it.
Good post

Yes, there is. If you would like the name of the medication I take, please PM me. I wouldn’t want to give “medical advice.”

How MANY TIMES have I read the above on these types of threads? The fact is, the nature of NFP only allows sex when the woman is least inclined to want it, and she can’t have it when she wants it most. How can that possibly not be a frustration?
I have yet to see any real evidence that it is the pill alone causing these divorces. Like was pointed out before most people using NFP are also the type that donlt believe in divorce under most or even any circumstances.
There isn’t any evidence linking the pill alone to divorce. There are many factors that lead to divorce. Let me also point out that often times, those who don’t believe in divorce aren’t any happier than those who are inclined to divorce. They are just more likely to suffer through it because they have been indoctrinated with he belief that divorce is forbidden in almost every circumstance.
It is more likely though that your average person using the pill will be someone that thinks divorce is ok.
If not terribly expensive and dramatic…it can get real ugly and that’s hardly the epitome of Catholicism. So one would think at the very least they should try to make it work for the economic and social reasons alone…
From reading these boards the people who are Catholics who use birthcontrol or donlt use birthcontrol but are open about their dislike and skepticism on Church teachings on sex, aren’t people who have thrown away every other teaching of the Church or people who have turned away from God. Ok, I’m not an advocate of ABCs as I know their risks, and in fact, I personally am high risk myself, BUT: Unfortunately, that’s exactly what it looks like as observed several posts above. A poster correctly pointed out that forbiddance of birth control was nowhere in Jesus’ teachings. The response was, yes it was: Jesus said the Church speaks for Him and they have spoken, so there you have it: Jeusus said it. That’s likely why the teaching is ignored by most Catholics. It’s a rule that is imposed upon the people calling on faith in what the Church says without question…which might be okay, except for the ramifications that people are not willing to risk.
Those who have had problems with NFP and church teachigns on sex might look deeper into things and if they can;t find satisfactory answers may soon find themselves asking is this teaching really from God? I don’t know anyone who knows what NFP is in real life. Everyone I have tried to talk to about it thinks it’s the old rythmn method. I don’t know anyone who practices NFP in real life and as a nurse, I’ve tried to educate people on it. Most people ignored me altogether. One person actually listened to me a while, read some material I gave her, looked at some graphs and charts … and then got Mirena saying, I’m sorry, this is crazy, I cannot get pregnant right now, I can’t risk it.
The pill can cause blood clots yes but mainly in people who are at high risk of that happening. People who smoke for instance. A healthy person in most cases has little to worry about. It’s a well known fact that ABCs cause some cancers, while inhibits other cancers. So nuns and those who don’t have children and/or aren’t taking ABCs are at risk for cancers that those who have children/take birth control are not. That’s because ABCs provide certain hormones present while pregnant. So those who have never had children and/or who have never taken ABCs don’t get that benefit. So one set of women is more at risk for some types of cancer, and another set of women is more at risk for other types of cancers. And yes, those with high blood pressure are more at risk. Those who develop high blood pressure are more at risk…but then they can always take antihypertensives. But isn’t it like that with most drugs? You take a drug to do something, and you have to take another drug to offset the adverse affects of the first one. And so on…

I dont want to use ABC due to the Church teachings. I still wouldnt say the pill is awful because I cant use it.
Good post
Indeed, Catholics should use Catholic moral moral in promoting a culture of life regarding ABC, not use trumped up, and sometimes downright false, claims about ABC.

These claims ring as hollow to those folks who under the care of their doctors. Many of these claims are verifiably false based on research.

Isn’t presenting the Truth enough?

The majority of people who get divorced in this country are CHRISTIANS.
That might have something to do with 76% of the country being Christians.
In fact, most studies I read have evangelical Christians having the highest divorce rate.
IMHO, Evangelicals fall into a different category. They tend to be more radical in their belief system. If one spouse becomes less religious, the situation can become intolerable.
Catholics, as a whole have almost the same rate as the rest of the population. Atheists usually have a lower divorce rate. So you are assuming that atheists have a higher divorce rate than Christians in general, which is false. They have a lower divorce rate.
If this is true, you’ve just proven my point that there are other mitigating factors in the study. The stats couldn’t be different if NFP was magic bullet that you make it out to be.
It is a fact that birth control pills simulate pregnancy. It is a fact that they decrease the sex drive of women while they are taking them. The men end up begging for sex.
As others have already noted, NFP makes the situation worse. Not only is sex restricted, it is restricted to infertile times. There are biological events that occur in the body that make sex urges strong during fertile times, which must be ignored when practicing NFP.
It makes for miserable marriages.
It makes for misery for the husbands in marriage and a miserable husband makes the wife miserable.
People that use BC are miserable, and so are those that practice NFP. It has nothing to do with natural or unnatural birth control.
It causes a high divorce rate, this is a fact.
Since most people that practice NFP also don’t believe in divorce, why would this come as a surprise. Force people that believe in divorce to use NFP as see if it is the magic bullet you claim it to be.
It is against God’s teachings.
Finally, we get to the root of the issue. The above-quoted statement is not necessary if the study stands on its own.

If it is against God’s teaching (through Tradition, because Christ didn’t mention it), then it is what it is. Studies and misinterpretations of them don’t need to be performed to “prove” you point. Attempts to do so simply discredit one’s position.
