Hello I hope you are all doing well, I’m new and had a question. I was wondering why baptism is so important in the Catholic Church. You say it cleans you from original sin and provides grace. But yet 1 Cor 1:17-18 says
17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.
Paul actually makes a distinction between the gospel and baptism, and says he was not sent to baptize. And in 1 Chor 15-14 he explains what his gospel is
“ Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you-- unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures”
So if that is the gospel why does the Catholic Church say you must do all these other things? Also, in order to be baptized, you have to go through all these steps in the catholic church. But in acts Philip was led by the Lord to meet a man traveling on the road, he gave him the gospel, and in verses 36-38 it says
Acts 8:36-38
36 Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, “See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?”
37 Then Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
38 So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
The only requirement was to just believe then he could be baptized. Why has the catholic church tacked on all these other things? I don’t understand.
