It is my personal belief that the arguments in favor of latin, incense, bells, priest facing the tabernacle, communion on the tongue/kneeling are all a very distant second to the most important aspect of the Mass; that the celebrating priest intends to do what the Church intends him to do , and that is to consecrate simple bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ for the sanctification of our souls.
The very existence of the term “bells and smells” implies that some can be more concerned about the externals of Mass than the internal, the desire and submission of ourselves to receive the Body of Christ.
While I believe that each and every Mass should be celebrated properly and respectfully, I think we can sometimes become too hung up on the externals that we personally do or do not care for.
To complain that Mass is “too bland” is to convey a lack of understanding of *what *the Mass is. Mass celebrated in a hut in the middle of the jungle is every bit as holy and efficacious as a Papal High Mass in St. Peter’s.
