Hello,
I see no reason why birth control is wrong in its place. I don’t think that if a husband and wife cannot afford a baby or don’t have the space, time, resources, ect, that they should have to refrain from any ‘union’. What is the reason it is so wrong?
Thanks for your time!

The purpose of sex is reproduction, that is why God gave it to us. The whole pleasure thing is just God being nice. Contraception is taking the pleasure and separating it from God’s purpose when He made sexuality, diminishing and demeaning a gift from God.

Summary from Compendium of the Catechism (issued by Pope Benedict XVI)
  1. When is it moral to regulate births?
2368-2369
2399

The regulation of births, which is an aspect of responsible fatherhood and motherhood, is objectively morally acceptable when it is pursued by the spouses without external pressure; when it is practiced not out of selfishness but for serious reasons; and with methods that conform to the objective criteria of morality, that is, periodic continence and use of the infertile periods.
  1. What are immoral means of birth control?
2370-2372

Every action - for example, direct sterilization or contraception - is intrinsically immoral which (either in anticipation of the conjugal act, in its accomplishment or in the development of its natural consequences) proposes, as an end or as a means, to hinder procreation.

Spacing children is not wrong. Spacing children by altering the act is wrong.

They would not have to absolutely refrain from union. The Church allows them to use NFP to determine the likelihood of conception at a particular time. They most certainly may engage in marital relations for the rest of the time.

In practice, a couple who use NFP may have normal relations 3 out of 4 weeks. That last week is a great time for them to develop their relationship in non-sexual ways.

It is wrong for several reasons.

First, our sexuality is a complete giving of oneself to their spouse. It is not giving just a part of yourself, it is giving all of yourself. Witholding your fertility is just that: witholding. It is an intrinsic part of who we are.

Second, changing the very nature of our reproductive systems is not ours to do.

Third, NFP is a viable option that, when practiced, has a higher success rate than the birth control pill. It does not diminish the Union between husband and wife.

It can be easy at times to think contraception would be a simple solution to an apparent problem. That conclusion, however, is reached out of fear. Fear of finances, fear of the strain on relationship, fear of trusting in God and allowing His will to be done. When we alter our reproductive systems (i.e. take contraceptives or use external contraception), we close the door to God’s will to leave room only for our own. When practicing NFP, relations occur during times of natural infertility in a woman’s monthly cycle. If God so chooses that you are called to be a mother, it will be done.

When we trust the Lord in all things and want to show Him that we do so we obey the moral directives of the Church. I believe it was in the 1930s when the Lambeth conference took place. Prior to that Protestants did not believe in birth control. The directive was “relaxed” at that conference. If this needs to be explained better I hope someone else will.

Riches are not required to have a large family. Some give in to the temptation of desiring larger homes with picture perfect decor inside. I see many happy, large and blessed families who are not ashamed to accept hand-me-down clothes, bicycles and toys. If the parents do their best in loving, disciplining, and teaching their children about the Lord, putting God first, then family…then things work out pretty good!

On a purely practical level, if you do not trust God and His ability to provide for you, you use contraception. If you choose not to love the natural and God-given product of your love of spouse, you use contraception. If you think more of yourself than you do of others, including the next generation and even your own family, you use contraception. If you do not care what God desires, and only about what you desire, you use contraception. It places a barrier between not only you and your spouse, but also between you and God.

Onan practiced a form of contraception (Genesis 38:8-10). Have a read to see what God thought of that.
