Why is contraception wrong?

Hi everyone. One thing I disagree with the Church on is the prohibition on contraception. Why is it that the Church prohibits the use of artificial contraceptives? I really don’t understand why they prohibit contraception and perhaps I would agree with the Church if I understood better.

First of all, please note that all of Christianity prohibited contraception until the Anglican Church accepted this in 1930. As is what seems to be the norm, many other Protestant affiliations followed suit.

Artificial contraception does not allow for the intended purpose of our gift of sexuality. We become “God” in a sense if we barrier what He intends. Biblical accounts as well as 2000 years of Church teaching has always held that our sexuality was not just intended for our source of pleasure. If it was then why not allow homosexual behavior as well as many other deviated sexual encounters?

The Church is the incarnate Body of Christ guided by the Holy Spirit. The Church is how Christ is present to us today. God said to Adam and Eve “Be fruitful and multiply”. Jesus Christ would align His will with the Father being that they are of one Divine will. I can hardly see Jesus instructing one to contracept. He said, “Let the children come to me”. And His Church is no less than Himself.

It seems that without using our resources and just merely accepting contemporary thought we can always find fault with what the Church teaches. But it is when we investigate the truth that we find that had we existed for the first 1900 years after Christ it would have been unheard of to contracept. And also note that contraception was around for many centuries. Maybe not in the pill form but there were many other ways that were used.

I hope that this helps and I’m sure that many other posters will add to my thoughts…God Bless…teachccd:)

Hmmm, you make very good points. I think I just changed my mind about contraception to be in line with the Church! 👍

Please read or listen to anything by Janet Smith:
catholiceducation.org/articles/sexuality/se0002.html

“So, in the first place, the Church objects to contraception because it refuses to let God perform His creative act in the arena in which He chose to do it. You know, God could have created new human life in different ways. In fact, He has before.”

It’s a long read but a really good explanation!

As a nurse, I had a hard time with this one too. Then I read some post here and had a discussion with my priest.

There are certain situations where contraception can be used. I’m not sure exactly how this comes into play…Talk to your priest about this one.

The “pill” doesn’t keep a woman from ovulating, it makes her have a period. She could have been pregnant thus the pill has caused an abortion. I got pregnant on the pill and thank God I have my beautiful daughter.

And forgive me… I’m a new Catholic (Easter 2007) so if I get this one a little mixed up… just look over me.

Condoms cause a “spilling of the seed” which is forbidden in the bible.

Holly,
I was there, too. Contraception was a woman’s right… after all, didn’t Mary have a choice? After a couple of rounds with Christopher West’s TOB explanations, I turned a 180 and had to come to the admission that what I promoted was selfish at the least and evil at the most. It’s tough admitting you were a jerk and that would be a kind evaluation. Now I’m tasked with teaching my kids that the oversexed world is a place they don’t want to imitate. Wish me luck!

Essentially, when a man and woman are intimate, there should be love, a man should love a woman like Christ loved his Church, this love should be UNRESERVED, Christ never held back his love for the Church, so in the act of intimacy a couple should never hold back their love for each other, children are fruits of this love making, that’s why it’s called ‘making love’.

Contraception detracts from this love, the couple do not want children, they hold back from their love, because they do not give themselves fully to each other, if they gave their body as a whole they should accept the children that can come with the act of sex.
