Why is drunkenness a mortal sin?

I like to drink every now and then. Note I say every now and then. I think it becomes a problem when youre getting drunk more and more as days pass by. When it impairs your judgement, that could lead you to more serious sin then it becomes a mortal sin.
Let your conscience guide you. And please even if you have the slightest bit of a buzz please dont drive!

God bless all of you!

Out of all the lists of mortal sins which Paul lists in his epistles, and of all the sins explicitly outlined by the Church, drunkenness is the one I take issue with - mostly because, in all honesty, I do enjoy having a few drinks.

The reason you don’t want it to be a sin is because you “enjoy” it. Just as homosexuals engaging in homosexual sin don’t think it is a sin because they “enjoy” it .It is pleasurable and you like it so it can’t be a sin! Wrong! Sometimes pleasurable things we like are sins. That is just the way it is. You can take issue with it but do you see my point? That is like a two year old saying but I want it or I like it so I should have it. God knows best.

My Favorite recovery book is titled

The Anonymous Disciple by Gerard Goggins.

Heart warming story of a Jesuit Priest who became an Alcoholic and sought help outside of the Church. It is definitely my favorite book on recovery.

If anyone is Catholic and knows anyone in AA or maybe needs AA,then this is the book

I do NOT agree that alcoholism is a sin any more than I agree that DIABETES is a sin.
This is a dangerous assertion. If you follow this line, then pedophilia, gluttony and other similar ‘addictions’ are not sins?

Calling alcoholism a sin would be the same as calling someone alergic to Peanuts a sin, too. The only difference is that the person alergic to peasnuts does not have the mental obsession to try and eat the peanut after they have had a bad bout with it. The alcoholic may try the game over and over for the simple reason that he or she wants to be like all the others who can take a few drinks. Once they take the drink in they have little or no control afterwards. It is not so simple as “just say no”.

If anyone would take a little time and do some history of the AA movement you would find that it may have never got off the ground without the Catholic Church. You may be surprised to find out that one of your Priest may attend AA.

For someone to say that Alcoholism is similiar to “pedophilia, gluttony” it is obviouse they know very little about alcoholism or the Catholic Churchs involvement, support, and backing of the Disease theory/illnes of alcoholism.

The sin nature that can rear it’s head up after taking a few drinks is a whole different discussion.

If you have friends or family members who sturggle whith Alcohol the worst thing you could do is tell them they are sinning and have no will power. You are not helping situation. You are making it worse.
