Why is it important to have faith? How does it improve a person’s character?

Do you mean Faith in Jesus? Or just any kind of faith in some deity or deities? I assume you mean the Christian God.

To have faith means, in part, to adhere to something or someone or some core beliefs. I think essentially it comes down to adherence to a person. Jesus. Jesus it the perfect role model for one thing. It is Jesus who points us towards who we are to become if we want to be truly human in its fullness. Everything else man tends towards involves a lack. If we set something up that is lacking in good as our model, then we too will be working to shape ourselves into something that is lacing which means we will possess certain lacks or evils in our character.

When we adhere to God through Faith, we move towards a virtuous character. We become what we contemplate. Faith involves the contemplation or turning towards God, the one true God.

Here is the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and a link to the section on faith:
Faith is first of all a personal adherence of man to God. At the same time, and inseparably, it is a free assent to the whole truth that God has revealed.
Notice that it is very much related to the whole truth. It is living your life as things actually are, in reality, because you personally adhere to truth. For me, when I read the bible as a child, I heard Jesus as truthful and telling me the truth. Just on a very simple level, knowing the truth helps a person make better decisions of every sort about their life. One simple way to relate that to character and virtues is that it will tend to increase prudence. Another simple way is that someone adhering to God will try very hard not to offend him and so will have additional motive not to do harm to others.

When I had little faith, I was a very different person. I would not have gone on a murder spree but

I did not truly understand

Love your neighbour as I have loved you.

And God was not number one in my life.
