what makes a saint a saint and to honour one is to honour GOD?

One becomes a Saint when they go to Heaven. We honor the saints for as the Catechism says “the saints are the chosen friends of God, and to honor them is to honor God Himself.”

Because they’re friends of God.

Their dignity and honor are a reflection of God’s work in them, and their cooperation with His work.

Honoring them doesn’t take away anything from God.

When you come into the home of someone and you greet their children, does that take away anything from the parents in the home?

Of course not.

In fact the mother and father might be saddened if you didn’t acknowledge their children.

God is Our Father and we need to really start putting that into practice in our lives. It’s such a clarifying and simplifying and uplifting idea…God is my Father, my loving and infinitely good Father!

It’s called “contemplation of our Divine Filiation.”

3 states of the Catholic Church

The Church triumphant = all saints in heaven, in the presence of the beatific vision
The Church suffering = all souls in purgatory being purified for heaven
The Church militant = all in the Church on earth
