Over 360,000 thousand people have signed Notre Dame’s petition to stand up for the Catholic Identity of the University. This is admirable, and I myself have signed that petition.

Yet, on a poll in this very forum 17 people felt that it was morally permissible for USF to cut their MA Theology program, despite that move being contrary to Jesuit education and the schools own mission statement. Only 2 people said that this was morally unacceptable.

My question is this:

Why is Notre Dame’s Catholic Identity worth standing up for, while USF’s is not?

tackles the question from an alternate angle I didn’t see that poll 😉

Heck, while we’re at it the petition to support the MA program is at:

ipetitions.com/petition/USFMAProgram

We did have some success getting the story out there.

www.catholic.org has been great reporting on the story. American Papist has reported a bit as well as the Cardinal Newman Society.

Another was able to get the SF Chronicle to run the story where it was promptly screwed up and made the theology department sound like a bunch of conquistadors forcing their religion on people.

Yep, so that’s been the buzz on USF. Oh and the faculty’s union is demanding that USF in their insurance program pay for abortions.

The problem with USF strikes a personal chord with me, as I received three of the Sacraments at their parish, St. Ignatius.

I have been aware of their pro-homosexual attitude for years, and the downhill slide of morality on the campus in general. It’s outrageous, and just goes to show that when a university is called ‘Catholic’ and has a priest as its dean, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it truly embraces ALL of the teachings of the Catholic Church.

I dont mean to throw cold water on the ND subject but was the petition that was circulated an “ON LINE” E MAIL PETITION ? if so it was a waste of time as a lawyer recently told me that they are not even recognized as legitimate in the world of local county state and Fed Gov’t. According to the USC ( UNITED STATES CODE ) a petition must have the sponsors name and address, The signers full legal name and address and the one who is circulating the petition , and myst also ask for ID proof of each signer . AND it must be on PAPER not an email that is later printed out

LOL, If I was dealing the Federal Government. Im not. I am a student working with the University of San Francisco trying to maintain and strengthen it’s weakened Catholic Identity.

With this in mind petitions affect reputations and can influence boards as a sign of the community’s displeasure with the presidents actions. All it does is says that president of the university is not acting in accord with the mission of the Jesuits or the University. It never claims to be a legal document as that has no importance to what the signers of the petition are trying to accomplish.

I agree. I think USF is at the point where they need to either rebuff the president or fire him all together. This could be the first part of getting him replaced. If there is no outcry on any of his actions then the board will see no reason to contradict him or fire him. There has to be an outcry against his actions.

The petition is the first part of that outcry.

We might be married. But I think to make it official she still owes me a baby cow. SOOOO while we might be “married” tribally speaking “I want my cow!!!”
