I’m not saying he is stuck in Hell - after all he tempts Jesus in the desert doesn’t he? But according to traditional notions he seems to rule Hell as his domain after having been cast into it.

Not in the sense that I think ‘if Milton believes it, it must be true’ and of course I’m aware that his poem is a work of literature, however I do have an expectation that as a devout Christian he would base his work on Holy Scripture in a responsible way. Perhaps that’s giving him too much credit, I suppose.

Milton wasn’t a Catholic and apparently viewed organised religion with some suspicion. Going by what I checked (if reports are accurate).
