I think you are all confusing socialism with communism. All the monastic institutions are socialist in that goods and property are shared. That is how the first Christians lived, according to the Acts of the Apostles. Also, take a look at the great labor parties of the world. Many of them have been headed by devout Catholics. In Australia, at the moment, we have a wonderful Catholic leading the NSW Labor Party. She is actually American and has a degree in theology.

Communism is a form of socialism and there is a major difference between socialism and monastaries. You do not choose socialism but you do choose monasticism. The Catholic church has always proclaimed that socialism is inherently evil and can only lead to greater poverty as is shown in every society that has attempted pure socialism. Every country that has been used as an example of the benefits of socialism are not pure socialist countries and have free enterprise to maintain their social wealth.

The blog you pointed out is so full of nonsense abt our system it must have been put together by a Republican. Wait times here are not bad, if your condition is serious it is treated right away. We in Canada have a much more stable economy than the USA, less crime, and you get most of your oil from us. Yet, there are Americans that can only come up with negative things to say abt us.

To the best of my knowledge, (admittedly not infallible) it is NOT against Catholic doctrine. Remember that Papal pronouncements on matters of doctrine are considered infallible. Not so comments or discussions by popes on matters that are not doctrine. Comments on political and economic issues by popes are comments on the world, not on doctrine. There are lots of Catholics who are very sympathetic to socialism, at least in some of its forms (which are many and different).

Capitalism does not equal Catholicism and does not (necessarily) even equal “democracy.”
Also, (shockwaves!!), the “prince of this world” reigns in America too, you know. Jesus is necessarily not on “America’s side,” nor on any country’s side. (I bet this’ll draw a lot of ire, ha ha.)

Socialism may be “bad” by the teachings of the Catholic Church but if you study, instead, the teachings of Jesus Christ (novel concept I know) then you will discover that socialism is what Jesus prescribed and that the early church in Acts operated under a somewhat socialist economic system. As to those who think that socialism and democracy are not complimentary, you should start studying something other than the teachings of the Catholic Church…like a text book!! Socialism is an economic system and democracy is a governmental system. There are many democratic socialist government which are working much more effectively than our democratic capitalistic society. It is democracry and capitalism that don’t work effectively together as democracy is the will of all the people and capitalism is set up to have the majority of the poor serve the minority of rich. This is antithetical to Christ’s message…just read the Magnificat…Mary states the Jesus will turn society upside down…the lowly will be raised up and the mighty will fall. That is the beauty of Christ’s message, not this dribble I find here and certainly NOT the rantings of the Vatican! You must seperate charity from justice. Socialism is not just an economic system and yes, democracy IS quite compatible with socialism. That’s why the USA is not a democracy. It’s a republic with a constitution. A constitution based on human nature and God given rights. Jesus did not promote anything close to socialism as it violates the right of someone to consent. In other words, my right to be free ALSO includes my right to be free from you. A repulic with a solid constitution for it’s pricipal basis of law is quite similar to the Catholic church which has it’s theology as a principal basis. Could you imagine if the Catholic church was a democracy? Our dogma would be based on the whims of modernity and who could shout the loudest. God expects government to rule likewise in a fashion that has a basis for law based on natural law which cannot be changed.

What we have now is corporatism brought on by a loss of the understanding that a constitutional republic works wonders with capitalism because it respects the rule of law and property rights. When we effectively replaced our republic with a democracy it turned from free market capitalism into corporatism. Everything is based on interest groups. Democracy is a flawed system. Once the majority realizes it can vote away the property of the minority you’re done. Democracy is mob rule.

Hey, we are freer up here than down in the USA. Especially free from fear…we don’t carry guns, we don’t lock our doors, (unless you immigrated from the USA). Our national murder rate is abt the same as one of your good cities.
So we call hate , “hate” I don’t see the trumped up charges though…usually they are hate.
Maybe the public expects those in politics to get quality treatment when they can’t even afford to go to a doctor. They think it’s normal.
Our man in NFLD jumped the cue when he didn’t have to. That is the issue here.

One jazz recording store owner (he immigrated from USA) once told me when asked if he was going to a concert just across the border in N.Y. said he would never cross that border because it was such a violent society in the U.S.
I love it when we travel south and go to a quality motel and see the guns carried by the staff and the signs in your room that all say “Do Not” . Makes you feel like your in an armed camp. But you like it , eh?

I heard and read about a gathering at the Lincoln Memorial on August 28th…it has to do with the USA and returning to it’s roots? Not sure…but thinking it is a hot month for this event and alot of people are going even so. Glenn Beck will be there and maybe Bill O’Reilly. Don’t know the name of the event but bus loads are headed up to D.C. for this. I hope they show it on TV. Prayer is powerful and I expect they might pray for America…not a bad idea.

Yup. You are absolutely right about a true democracy and socialism. (remember the SDS?) That is why our forefathers were smart enough to put together a republic. Too bad it is being destroyed. And you are mistaken about Jesus supporting socialism. I strongly disagree that the objective of capitalism is to have the majority of poor working for the rich. The objective of capitalism in my view (don’t bother I know you’ll disagree) is to tap into the human spirit to better their lot in life through their own contributions…NOT to better their lives by confiscating the products of another’s labor. We you under the impression that Jesus got rid of “thou shalt not covet thy neighbors goods?” Show me the place he did that.
